I would be wary about teaching my child not to listen to people telling him to be careful for his own safety. If a bus was coming and a stranger yelled at him to get out of the way..... You want him to just send there because mommy said not to listen to anyone but mommy?????
Taking candy, having conversations, going into cars with strangers.... Absolutely! But telling him not to listen Ben a stranger says be careful??? I think it's teaching him not only a dangerous message, but has the potential to turn him into a brat who feels he doesn't need to listen to people in stores telling him not to touch or run, or his teachers in school.
If my son was sticking his hand in a cage, I probably woud have addressed it waaay before a stranger even had the opportunity. But if someone was watching out for my child, I would have thanked her. I mean.... What does SHE care if my kid gets hurt? But.... A good person does care about other people's kids.
She isn't questioning your patenting ability. Just a thought.
I get what you're saying but I wasn't telling him not to listen to strangers. I was saying that some random person's instructions do not trump mommy's, especially when mommy is present. There is a fine line there bc while you want your children to accept help when necessary you also don't want to create a belief that strangers are their friends.
I guess...
I also know that the difference between what I was trying to say and the blanket statement "don't listen to strangers" could easily be lost on my 2yo. Hopefully, he didn't permanently retain the latter moral from the incident.

It sounds like she was coming from a good place, conderned that your little one might get hurt.
Personally if I were her I would have thought you were nasty.

I am one of those annoying moms Who will politely school any child who barrels over to my adorably tiny dog and starts petting. Not to communicate loudly to the parent in a passive way that he or she is incompetent, but to have a child learn that it is CRUCIAL they ask before petting any dog. When I first got my dog, he did nip. I think sometimes strangers do need to provide gentle guidance to a steanger's child. The lesson can stick better than when it's the same nagging parent who says no... Stop... Get down.... Don't touch.... Stop running.... Come here... Etc.
But don't you think that is different? In this senario, it is YOUR dog that you KNOW and are liable for. I do the same when kids come towards my dogs.
But for a stranger to speak for the petting zoo or unknown bird in the cage to another child who is with their mother, I don't see it as comparable. That stranger I am sure did not know the bird. It was not a zoo/store employee, which would then surely be ok for someone in "charge" of the bird who knows the bird to reprminand a child who is not theirs.

I would have said "Thank you for looking out for my kid". This lady did nothing wrong, sorry I disagree with your response.

Re: Random mom's interaction with Ds and my response, just curious for opinions.
I would have thanked her. Mainly because I wouldn't let me kids put their fingers in a bird cage because (1) they could get bit (2) birds don't strike me as the cleanest creatures.
I don't think she said it to offend you or judge your parenting. It was said because it's not a good idea to put your fingers in a bird cage of a traveling petting zoo.
Even though you were ok with him doing it, I think you overreacted.
Maybe a better way to handle it was to say "He has his fingers in the bird cage." in case you didn't see/notice it?

IDK, I come from the belief of "it takes a village...". I dont think she thought your parental judgement was poor, you may be over analyzing. I think she was just trying to be helpful. If it were me I probably would have thanked her.
Same!

I am obviously in the minority but I do not think you overeacted at all. I also think people whether it is strangers, family, friends, etc. have too much say in the way people rear their own children. JMHO. If I was concerned about a child's safety, I would make a worker aware and they can address the parents if necessary.

Def overreacted!! I would have said thanks, it's nice to know everyone is looking out! Who knows, what if I had had something on my mind and the bird did bite? You would have been grateful instead of offended.

She wasn't parenting your child, she was warning him of an possible danger. Maybe she's seen a bird attack through a cage before, who knows, but I think the right response would've been "thanks for the warning, I'm watching him".

It wasn't about you. The woman saw what she thought was a potentially dangerous situation for a child and reacted.
I think your response was ridiculous and rude.

A year and a half ago I pretty much left it at the understanding that I may have overreacted but also that I couldn't really convey on here the way the lady looked or the tone of her voice when she instructed my ds. Those were the things that probably rubbed me the wrong way and not her literal words.
Thanks for calling me ridiculous and rude though. I think THAT'S ridiculous and rude, lol.

I think she could have said it better, because the way she said it sounds like it could have scared your DS. I would have been more mad about that. But it sounds like she was just trying to be helpful.
Edit: oops didn't realize this was an old post
