NPR but curious for opinions re: cat ownership
Ok, let me give some background info here...
When I was 21, my sister (then 13) and I and our mom were the only ones still living in our house. I found an ad for a kitten named Oreo that was rescued that needed a home. I showed my sister, we both fell in love with this picture of the kitten and presented it to my mom. She took some convincing, but eventually reluctantly agreed to let us go see Oreo, and if we wanted her we could take her home, with the understanding that she would be OUR cat and we would be responsible for taking care of her, not my mom. So, we saw her, fell in love, and took her home. We shared all the responsibilities equally, and she used to alternate whose bed she slept in every night ( ). Fast forward to 2008: I got married in August and moved out of the house, and my sister went to college (NYU) a few weeks later. My mom had asked me a few months prior if I would take Oreo to live with my husband and me after we got married, because she didn't want to have to be totally responsible for her. So we gladly took her. We also have 2 dogs, and while it took a WHILE for Oreo to be comfortable with them, now they all get along really well, and even nap together sometimes! Sometimes when my sister was home for summer break or between semesters, she would take her for a few weeks. So now, my sister will be starting her senior year in September and is planning to get an apartment in the city with her friend (instead of living in the dorms), and is fully planning to take Oreo back for good. I'm really sad about it! We feel like she's part of our family now. I can totally see it from my sister's perspective though. She hasn't been able to live her for 3 years now. Thank you for reading if you made it this far!! So... who do you think should get Oreo??

i think oreo should stay with you. she sounds like she is happy where she is, and i know that cats get pretty stressed when they move.

Re: NPR but curious for opinions re: cat ownership
i will give you my experience...my cat had to move in with my BIL due to everything that went on. after 3-4 months he moved back with me. he peed and pood on my couch everyday, and throughout the house. he was soooo mad at me for shipping him from house to house. i had to get rid of my couch that he peed on all the time. i would never ever again move a cat around too much...they get mad at you and take it out on you and your house!

ITA. Oreo seems to be happy with you and your DH (and the dogs, which is an accomplishment in and of itself!).

Funny you should mention this. She NEVER peed anywhere but her litterbox in her whole life until a little over a year ago. We discovered a couple different spots that she peed on. We didn't know if it was the stress of dealing with the dogs, or moving stuff around to get ready for the baby (we moved her litterbox and food to a different room), or what. I wonder if it was the bouncing back and forth between houses.

i moved from an apartment with my cat, to my house in the country and had DD and never had a problem. but once i was gone and he was totally out of his element and then back with me he let me know big time that he was not happy at all.

I think that although it was a family pet since it has lived with you and is comforatble that oreo should stay with you..I can understand your sister maybe wanting someone to share her apartment with maybe she can rescue a new cat and still visit oreo when she visits you

ITA - the shelters are practically exploding. I'm sure she can find a sweet kitty to give a good home to.
