Also, another former Penn State player (Sam Stellatella) donated money now for Sandusky's defense (clicky WTH is wrong w/these people?
What an ignoramus. He sent this a-hole $100 and urged other players to do the same.
All while said azzhole collected more than HALF A MILLION DOLLARS since 1998 from his non-profit "foundation" where he preyed on his victims.

Just to be clear, that is PENN STATE, not UPENN... UPenn is an ivy league, Penn State is the 'football school' known for its rioting
Okay...that is a little uncalled for. I went to Penn State and I agree that all those who are invloved in these heinous acts and those who knew about should be punished to the fullest extent that the law allows, but don't do that. I am not a football player and I never even went to a football game. The name or the fame was not why I attended Penn State. And this comment just shows how little you truly know about the university and its world class medical, agricultural, and communications programs. I understand that you are basing your comment on recent media coverage and events, but as you have a right to express your opinion, so do I. I just wish people would stick to the issue at hand and stop making these broad generalizing statement that trash an entire student body. I understand the crimes committed but that is like saying a whole race is responsible for the actions of a few ( and while many people knew about this if you look logically at the numbers it is a pittance compared to those who have gone/taught/or worked for the university). We arent all football fans overturning news vans for fun
I'm not basing my comments on the media, I have friends that go there now for their doctorates, friends from high school who went there for Ugrad and a few friends that have kids there now. I actually don't even watch college football (or any football). I don't know you and don't really care why you went there, you don't need to explain that to me. Call it what you want, but if they were not a big football school (throw in the riots by some students), it wouldn't have the name that it does. Take that stuff away and Penn State wouldn't be known by its academics. Whereas UPenn is an Ivy-thereby known for academics (and clear from my friends who went to Wharton/UPenn--academics was the reason). Just calling it like it is, I didn't make this up.
ETA: You can deny this reputation all you want, but this is the reputation of this school (at least for me and just about everyone else I know). Obviously every single person is not like this there (thanks for explaining that to me).
JMO
If you know people there now going for doctorates and people sending their kids there, why are they going if not for academics? Just to waste their time at a crappy school? And Ivy league does not necessarily mean academics...it means more money. At least to everyone I know but its apparent we run in different circles. And for that I am glad.
Eta: If you know your history you will find that the term Ivy League was actually started to distinguish a school with a good football team.

I NEVER said it was a crappy school, but its definitely not in the same league as an Ivy. I know how the term Ivy league started and like you said, that is history. UPenn is not known for its football. There are a TON of other private NON ivy schools that are JUST as expensive. Believe whatever you want, run in whatever circles you choose, it is my opinion like it or not!

Piggybacking on what brownie said, while the ivy league began as an athletic division, now they are are often viewed by the public as some of the most prestigious and are often ranked amongst the best universities in the United States and worldwide, and all of the Ivy League's institutions place within the top 15 of the U.S. News & World Report college and university rankings; with five placing in the top nine. That's just silly to say that they are not academically strong or competitive. Sarah Lawrence is the most expensive college in the country, not an ivy.
My dad went to Penn State, and had/has such school spirit, primarily because of the athletic prowess of the school.

Where is Sandusky? I'm assuming he's in police custody?
Is he? Someone mentioned that he was out on $100K bail
I really am curious to know where he is. I haven't seen 1 report on this. Nothing from his lawyer, nothing from his family. NOTHING. You would think the media would be covering stories from in front of his house. The only story I've seen recently was that someone threw bricks through is window at home. Nobody was there at the time. But how is the media not stalking him. I want to see this. More than the coverage of Penn State.
ETS: Yes he is out on bail. I just looked it up on line I WISH the media would find this f**ker and stalk him! Harass him! Put the attention back on HIM!
i wish the media would stalk him so he wouldn't have so much freedom!! you would think he would be hiding out somewhere, but he's not! he was seen in dicks sporting goods late last week wearing penn state clothing
...and he lives less than a mile from an elementary school

WHAT??? See I don't get this. WHY hasn't the media been all over this guy? Stop covering Penn State and Joe Pa and get back to the root of it all. This animal. Find him and make his life miserable. His ugly mug should be all over the news.

From what I have seen they have, and now some of his idiot friends that have come out to speak about him too Plus he's already awaiting trial, there is nothing else for them to do except let him have his day in court because he's already been arrested. He's obviously a disgusting, sick, screwed-up animal for what he did...I don't think anyone is denying that (except maybe a few people who apparently are his friends?). I don't think he has a chance of escaping these charges...that being said, I have no idea why he can be in the close proximity of an elementary school...lots if strange stuff it seems between the University and the local police. Lots of red flags to this case (especially now that the whole pimping out the boys story came out..who else was involved in that?) I think the media's been covering Penn State and Joe Pa because they're obviously connected to it, more of a gray area here as to who else was involved and to what degree, the rallying students for Joe Pa getting fired, the game still played this past Saturday, the name of the school of the school is a huge part of it...it wasn't just one man who did this and covered it up all by himself.
The media's goal is to reach as many viewers as possible, so by using Penn State and Joe Pa (who aren't completely clean here), they reach more people. There seems to be a large trail of people who failed, especially some who are mandated reporters (I think Joe Pa is one). Because of the grandiosity of what happened, the whole football program and/or school is now under a microscope.

Re: Did we discuss the Penn State scandal? (includes Grand Jury Report)
Just gets uglier and uglier... here's the latest:
Pennsylvania district Judge Leslie Dutchcot ignored prosecutors’ request for $500,000 bail -- and an electronic ankle bracelet -- for Sandusky, instead freeing him on $100,000, according to the Web site Deadspin.
Dutchcot -- who volunteers for the Second Mile children’s charity, as well as organizations such as the American Heart Association -- ordered that Sandusky “pay nothing unless he failed to show up for a court hearing.”

Is anyone watching the Today show??? about 15 minutes ago they had a man from Penn State on,,,I'll look for his name. They ended the segment with him saying how angry he was at the accused than he said "He ruined Penn State",,,nothing about the boys abused in the statement. Hopefully he said it in an earlier segment but it sounded selfish.

I saw this on the news this morning. I have the feeling this thing is going to snowball BIG TIME (think Watergate) and the information that we find out is going to be horrifying. I'm thinking coverups that go way up to the top. We shall see....

Re: Did we discuss the Penn State scandal? (includes Grand Jury Report)
this is the most depressing ******* debate I have EVER read on this website.
I do understand the sentiment behind what Jodi wrote...trying to reconcile yourself to a belief about someone you thought you "knew" and could trust.
now, I will say that there is (hopefully) far more of an intimate connection with your spouse than the football coach you hung around a few times and had ice cream with, but I do understand that as an institution it perpetuates a feeling of trust.
BUT you must also understand to anyone who can remove themselves even slightly from the situation, how ridiculous it seems for people to even be thinking about the schools reputation right now when the truth and the crux of the matter is that little boys were being RAPED for years, and that the trust and good feeling and institutional pride is the REASON this was allowed to perpetuate. the fact that people could not separate their identities from the school's is the REASON this continues to happen. the fact that the reputation of the school falls so heavily on it's football tradition and it's continued success is the REASON this happened.
the bottom line is, this should be a lesson to ANYONE who is blinded by the love of an institution. b/c even though THIS coach preyed upon poor little boys fromt the ghetto with little family support, this TRUST..this LOVE of school of COACH...this same feeling of disbelief that someone you loved and trust could really be out to hurt anyone...is will get your little middle class children molested and raped by their coach.
it is the most awful thing in the world...that feeling..like that open letter to the Penn Stater's said..to go into your child's room...to look down on their tiny sleeping face and KNOW there are predators out there. and that MOST OFTEN it is someone they will know and trust. it is the most helpless feeling as a parent or of someone who LOVES the children in their lives.
the balance in trying to teach them to trust authority but to breach that trust if they do something too private..too personal.
change your allegiance...forget that it happened at YOUR college and realize it could happen at your CHILD/NIECE/NEPHEW/COUSIN/NEIGHBOR's school. it can and it DOES.

I saw this too, he's a writer/expert/historian on PS sports I think. He started saying what he would do to Sandusky if he could get his hands on him now, and then he said "he ruined PS" and looked like he was about to cry. NOT one thing about the victims!!

Right?
I mean, talk about sending the wrong message!
In the middle of this whole mess, ruined lives, emotional trauma, etc, they have to play this silly game? Talk about showing what's more important.
And I'm glad they lost, too. I know some are innocent in all of this and they work hard, but if I had to see celebration of some sporting victory, especially in light of all this, I'd want to vomit.

YES !!! OMG ! This school has the worst reputation not for what was done but how it is being handled! The whole reaction over the concern of sports and "my alumni's reputation" is worldwide headlines. The REAL horror is what happened to these children and the evil thrust upon them that they must bear forever. NOT the sport nor reputation. It is shocking at how the victums have taken a backseat to this. I am aware that this is not all students/faculty but there are many on tv spouting off about the game and reputation! The rioting only solidified it very, VERY tragic

I disagree. While I am completely disgusted by everything that has happened and hope everyone involved gets what's coming to them, why should the football game have been cancelled?
My understanding is that the players and the coaches today had nothing to do with the abuse. Why should they be punished for something they had no hand in? The graduate assistant who witnessed the abuse in 2002 who is now a coach was put on administrative leave, Joe Paterno was fired, so they weren't involved in the game at all. Students and other people who went to the game apparently all wore a certain color blue to show their support for the victims.
I know this may not be the most popular opinion, but that's my take on it.

I know this may not be the most popular opinion, but that's my take on it. . I see your point but I just feel its a mix of poor time coupled with the general sense overall that the school cares more about football rather than the victims. For example, had there not been rioting over joe pa, it'd cast a different light. I just feel it was inappropriate.

^^ Agreed.
Also, having that football game the other day? I found it DISGUSTING
It takes a lot for me to make such a bold statement, but I found it to be in SUCH poor taste.
I was surprised that they were playing too!
I totally agree. The football players on the team today were in middle school during this incident. They have worked hard for this moment. They have zero involvement in this tragedy. Why punish them?

There is no easy answer. Understand that the victims here were very close to the team as well, they were there for many games, practices, travels. It's crazy but they were tied to the team and players and must be very emotional and sad about it all as well. It's really a tough and twisted situation.
