Re: Did we discuss the Penn State scandal? (includes Grand Jury Report)
It's not about punishing the current players. It's if Penn State wants to reclaim its name , how much differently would things feel if the current players said they didn't want to play in the game and instead wanted to donate time to an abuse center or something? Not money. Time. I bet years down the line, that'd be mOre memorable than losing a game as they did on Saturday in all this mess. I know I think differently than most.

Just gets uglier and uglier... here's the latest:
Pennsylvania district Judge Leslie Dutchcot ignored prosecutors’ request for $500,000 bail -- and an electronic ankle bracelet -- for Sandusky, instead freeing him on $100,000, according to the Web site Deadspin.
Dutchcot -- who volunteers for the Second Mile children’s charity, as well as organizations such as the American Heart Association -- ordered that Sandusky “pay nothing unless he failed to show up for a court hearing.”
How is this not a conflict of interest? The judge should recuse himself if he had contact with him through Second Mile.

^^ Agreed.
Also, having that football game the other day? I found it DISGUSTING
It takes a lot for me to make such a bold statement, but I found it to be in SUCH poor taste.
I was surprised that they were playing too!
Right?
I mean, talk about sending the wrong message!
In the middle of this whole mess, ruined lives, emotional trauma, etc, they have to play this silly game? Talk about showing what's more important.
And I'm glad they lost, too. I know some are innocent in all of this and they work hard, but if I had to see celebration of some sporting victory, especially in light of all this, I'd want to vomit.
I disagree. While I am completely disgusted by everything that has happened and hope everyone involved gets what's coming to them, why should the football game have been cancelled?
My understanding is that the players and the coaches today had nothing to do with the abuse. Why should they be punished for something they had no hand in? The graduate assistant who witnessed the abuse in 2002 who is now a coach was put on administrative leave, Joe Paterno was fired, so they weren't involved in the game at all. Students and other people who went to the game apparently all wore a certain color blue to show their support for the victims.
I know this may not be the most popular opinion, but that's my take on it.
I totally agree. The football players on the team today were in middle school during this incident. They have worked hard for this moment. They have zero involvement in this tragedy. Why punish them?
There is no easy answer. Understand that the victims here were very close to the team as well, they were there for many games, practices, travels. It's crazy but they were tied to the team and players and must be very emotional and sad about it all as well. It's really a tough and twisted situation.
I think they held the game because they are trying to distance themselves from this situation. The message they are trying to send is it has to do with the individuals arrested & those that were suspended or terminated, but not the institute itself.
As for Sandusky living near an elementary school, I think it's innocent until proven guilty. Also I don't know this - is he staying in his home? Why aren't the media camped out on this guy's lawn?

For me, if current players want to donate their time to an abuse center, that's wonderful. But I don't think people should expect them to do that. It's not their responsibility to fix this. I think they can still express their sympathy to the victims and continue to be productive, non-corrupt members of Penn State. In my opinion it's unfortunate for them to be judged for going on with their life.

I'm not sure if he is staying at his home. I read a report that a brick was thrown through his window just the other day. My guess is that he would be staying somewhere else.

It is a complete and utter conflict of interest and she should have recused herself IMMEDIATELY to stomp out even a HINT of collusion/corruption.
The whole thing runs so broad and so deep I think it will take YEARS to fully assess the true level of corruption in this mess. The whole thing should be turned over the Feds at this point, since local law enforcement and judiciary are biased here too.

I'm convinced there is a huge cover up involving many local officials.
This scandal involves a lot of very wealthy and powerful men, who clearly have a lot to hide.
This has been going on for years and I'm willing to be that those involved would be willing to do anything to cover their tracks.
Look into the missing DA who investigated this case back in 98. I'm sure he got too close...

ita. many of the players gave out blue ribbons for the students to wear to the game on saturday, participated in the candlelight vigil, and prayed for the victims before the game. i don't really think they're obligated to do anything for the victims, and imo they have done more than many other people would have (or did).

Forgive me if this has already been addressed because I haven't read this entire thread.
Where were the parents of these children? Why did they allow some man to be in contact with their children alone? I can't imagine allowing my young child to go off with anyone by themselves, male or female.
How did this guy have access to so many children?

He basically started a foundation called The Second Mile to help at risk kids. That is what makes this whole thing even more sick... that he started a foundation so that he had access to kids who didn't have parents who were paying 100% attention. They were underprivileged kids who didn't have much family support at home. Sick, sick, sick!

The children abused were part of Sandusky's Second Mile program. They come from under privileged homes, often there is only a single parent, if any. They have very little supervision in their lives.
The program was meant to serve these kids and help them. Not destroy them.

Eh, I think it was in poor taste. And then reading an article (I have to find it, I read it 2 days ago) they interviewed one of the players and he said they wanted to play and didn't want to "let the fans down" Of course its not the current players fault, but them not playing a game would have done better for them in the public eye IMO.
Now hearing what this judge did too? Like Jennie said, I think there's so much here that was covered up...and its slowly unraveling...and its all DISGUSTING. TO ME, like other posters on her expressed, its disgusting the extent to which people went to keep this covered up. Absolutely disgusting! Shame on them! Sandusky is obviously fuckedup in the head and I don't think anyone questions his wrong doing. But all these other officials covering this up, these idiots going on TV worried more about the school's reputation? Those poor boys...Its obvious to me how many people there put football over everything. I feel like its almost cult-like, just following something blindly and not being able to think independently...JMO.
This whole thing is sick, shame on all of those involved at Penn state

It's REALLY SAD to me that these victims partially feel bad about what happened now to the football program because of them coming out. It's obvious that football trumps all there, they probably were so emotionally invested there too...really sad all around

this is the most depressing ******* debate I have EVER read on this website.
BUT you must also understand to anyone who can remove themselves even slightly from the situation, how ridiculous it seems for people to even be thinking about the schools reputation right now when the truth and the crux of the matter is that little boys were being RAPED for years, and that the trust and good feeling and institutional pride is the REASON this was allowed to perpetuate. the fact that people could not separate their identities from the school's is the REASON this continues to happen. the fact that the reputation of the school falls so heavily on it's football tradition and it's continued success is the REASON this happened.
the bottom line is, this should be a lesson to ANYONE who is blinded by the love of an institution. b/c even though THIS coach preyed upon poor little boys fromt the ghetto with little family support, this TRUST..this LOVE of school of COACH...this same feeling of disbelief that someone you loved and trust could really be out to hurt anyone...is will get your little middle class children molested and raped by their coach.
change your allegiance...forget that it happened at YOUR college and realize it could happen at your CHILD/NIECE/NEPHEW/COUSIN/NEIGHBOR's school. it can and it DOES.
THANK YOU! Exactly!

I dont know if this was posted already, but here is an ACTUAL copy of the 23 page Grand Jury Indictment against Jerry Sandusky.
It describes in graphic detail the exact nature of the abuse on each of the victimes. I had to stop at page 3 because I was starting to get sick.
http://www.freep.com/assets/freep/pdf/C4181508116.PDF
It's in the original OP.
Sickening, isn't it? I strongly suggest reading through it because it does give a full picture of the eyewitnesses' actions. Also found it interesting how little media play was given to the fact that Sandusky, his wife & his friend all reached out to one of the victims before he was scheduled to testify at the Grand Jury hearing.

I'm not sure I could read that through but I'll give it a whirl.
As for the lack of media originally, I'm not surprised and as for Sandusky's wife and friend reaching out to one of the victims, again, no surprise there.
You're dealing with a LOT of money and a LOT of SICK SICK SICK men doing SICK SICK SICK things to little boys.
This has been going on for years, they're not going to go down without a fight to cover it up.
I hope they all ROT IN HELL.

ITA I read the WHOLE thing, most of it through gritted teeth and with nausea building in the pit of my stomach. This case is rotten to the core and has been for over 13 years.
BTW isn't it a flucking FELONY to contact a grand jury witness prior to testimony???
His wife and friend should be brought up on charges for this as well.

I can't read this. I actually witnessed someone being molested and it's sickening. My stomach turns just thinking of this story or what I witnessed. Which is why I will NEVER understand how someone witnessing something so horrific didn't do more.

Whoops, thats right..Duh, I am losing my head today! I've just been skimming this entire thread because its so long... and I am still reading pieces of it here and there now since I am finally familiarizing myself with all the players in this scandal (pun intended). Absolutely horrible. I hope those victims find a way to leave normal lives after all this abuse. Ugh..I cant get over how much Sandusky got away with this for so long..

The football game should have been played (which it was). These players have been scouted, given incentives, scholarships etc. for choosing Penn State. Coaches have come from all over to bring them to their respective school. Their future careers, if they continue on in football depend on where they play. You can't punish them for an outcome them couldn't imagine would ever happen.
I believe the student body should have been punished and not allowed to attend them game. Their rioting was heinous.
