But my question is, when does it stop? When we can move forward as a country and a society and stop the discrimination PERIOD? Just because someone is in the "majority" does not mean that they are not "hurt" by discrimination against them.

We are 'supposed' to be a melting pot. Have we always been- um no that is obvious, but it has gotten better. I can see it in my students. I can see it in my own life. I am a Heinz 57 I am such a mutt/ mix of so many things. My Mother's side- my Mom's dad was a Sefartic Jew, who's family eventually lived in Africa for a time and then Austria. My Mom's Mom's family were Russian/ German Jews. My Dad's family is Polish and Sicilian. My Husband is 100% Italian and Roman Catholic and we are raising my daughter Episcopalian. We run the gamete. I remember living in a very Anglo town growing up and because I was very close to the Jewish side of my family I received my prejudices from my other classmates. My Jewish classmates didn't really accept me either. I was in limbo as a 'Halfie" It suxed not being accepted anywhere.

I teach Spanish in a very Italian town. I used to always hear from my students how they need to learn Spanish in order to speak to their maid or their landscapers. Now I have to tell you I do not hear that anywhere as much as I used to. Children realize that this is no longer a big world and that it is a small Global Community and that they need to be able to communicate with as many people as possible in today's workforce. I used to always hear- why do we have to learn Spanish, everyone should speak English. I then explain to them about Esperanto and why if failed. It is getting better.

With that being said though I still feel a reverse prejudice- separate groups are allowed for every other group, but what about someone like me who is some many things that I only really classify myself as Caucasian or American. There is no group just for me?

Also this prejudice exists in every country and I think that we all know this to be true. I think many countries that are mostly of the same ethnic background have this issue too. I know when I studied in Costa Rica the family on the next block had an issue with this girl Raquel that they were supposed to be hosting, why because she was Dominican and not only was she Dominican but she was a black Dominican. They called the school and asked to have her removed. I remember my host mother staying awful things about Nicaraguans. I remember my ex-boyfriend's mother who was from Cuba (she was blond hair and blue eyed) talking about how the only true Cubans were the light ones and all the rest were the 'dirty breed'.

This is AWFUL in my opinion, but the one thing that they can do that we lack is they still can unite and consider themselves one. They are all LATINOS, It didn't matter that my Grandfather was one type of Jew and my Grandmother was another they were still JEWS.

We as Americans lack the ability to no longer label and just say I am an AMERICAN. We had it for awhile after 911 but it went away. At this point the demographics of this country are quickly changing but we need to stop categorizing ourselves we are AMERICANS!!!

Back to the original thing I do think that an all white billboard would definitely cause an uproar.

Re: I really have to ask...

I enjoyed the debate in this thread- though I was only able to participate in the beginning. It was interesting to see all many different perspectives.

I would like to add that I don't think there is anything wrong with a Jewish person only wanting to marry another Jewish person.

However, I also don't think it is wrong if a Protestant wants to marry another Protestant.

I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to marry someone who shares in your religious beleifs - whatever they are.

Very interesting (and surprisingly civil... Chat Icon )

We're all minorities in some circles. Yes, I am a white, christian male, but I don't take offense when posts here say "Ladies, what do you think...", or "Thanks, Ladies....". In here, by my point of view, all of the women are the majority, and us few guys are the small minority. I'm not comparing it to being segregated, or ostracized or insulted in society, but just pointing out that people just need to realize that they are all minorities, AND majorities in certain circles.

most of the posts on this thread are basically attacking jdate, blacksingles.com and anything that caters to a certain group.

just b/c allwhitedating.com may not be able to afford a billboard in TS, doesn't mean that they can't put one there if they had the means (and I'm not saying that they don't have the means).

if anyone wants to protest it, that too is their right and its protected under the Bill of Rights.

There are very few "attacks" on this thread. It was a debate between people with all kinds of nationality, sexes, religions, beackgrouds etc.

that is not how it came across to me. and I can only assume by Shelly's, Leslies and other posters, that I am not alone in saying that.

Actually, I did not feel attacked. I was very impressed about how civil everyone was in this debate. I have to say, it really made me think.

I agree - I didn't perceive this thread as an attack by any means, but instead, people offering their different views. I thought it was very respectful and enlightening. Chat Icon

Since you two are the people I engaged with most, I am very gladdened by the fact that YOU both did not perceive it as an attack.

it wasn't at all. I have NO, ZERO, ZILCH problem with ANY type of dating service whatsoever.

Nor do I feel "threatened" by Jdate or any other group that caters to a particular race, culture, religion etc.

My problem is that the "right" is limited here in this country.

I am actually aghast that it was misinterpreted. But I can only imagine that it is due to others preconceived notions, and not from any of the ideas I actually expressed on this thread.

so thank you both ladies.

it was very thought provoking to me as well.

Re: I really have to ask...

I read most of this thread yesterday before I left work and didn't get a chance to comment on it at all - I usually like to read the whole thread first - but I just wanted to mention that there is a website called christiansingles.com. And it gets no heat for it as far as I know. It's not exclusive to WHITE christians but I know it exists - a former co-worker of mine was on it all the time and I think she met her FH there.

I think there is one distinct difference, which was mentioned before - each of these sites is exclusive to only one particular criteria. JDate is open to jews of all races, blacksingles is open to blacks of all religions and christiansingles is open to all christians. They're just singling out one thing that is most important to them.

And before online dating existed, the personals said it all - without heat. i.e, SWF seeks SWM for .....fill in the rest. It's always been there, it just hasn't always been as in your face I think.

The difference in today's society v. 1970's is that MOST people (at least most of the people I know) do NOT consider this the norm, nor do they consider it acceptable. You are taking excluded examples and making it a general opinion when that is simply not the case.

Of course its not the norm. But that being said, these things (websites, channels, pageants) are geared towards bringing peopel of a certain, minority culture closer and hopefully raising some pride. What is the harm in that? Do white Americans really feel discriminated against because they can't compete in Miss. Black America or because there is no channel called White Entertainment Channel?

I guess I see that the harm of discriminating against whites against the pride and benefits to minorities having certain events to bring those together.

And the reason I even raised those racist and anti-semitic acts is because prejudice against Jews and Blacks still exist. ALthough its not the norm, everyone so often something will happen that will remind me that there are some people in the US who don't think I, as Jewish person, belong here.

It also makes me think that if something like this is happening in NYC, what is happenign in the rest of America Chat Icon My grandparents lived in Poland and Russia for hundreds of generations before they were taken to the concentration camps and labpor camps. Same with my husband's family from middle east when in the 1950's the right for Jews to own property was taken away and Jew would be hung in the square every day until all the Jews left.

EVERY channel is the WEC (White Entertainment Channel). That's why we don't have them. And when people ask why certain cultures have a parade down 5th Avenue and a white person asks "Where their parade is?" EVERYDAY is their parade. The WORLD shuts down for Christmas and the New York Stock Exchange CLOSES the day Jesus died.

I am not saying this is wrong, but PLEASE give the floor to some other cultures. IT'S ABOUT TIME

Here is the thing IMO. I think the best way to describe is is that people assume that someone/something is for white chirstians unless specified otherwise. Minorities, by the mere fact that they are minority, have more leeway to advertise their differences than the majority. Also, ones minority status becomes more of an issue in media and such than someone's white christian status.

Being Jewish, I can speak from that perspective. The fact is, (and I have seen it on this board), people just assume that most people here are Christian. For example, there was post a few weeks ago, "how often do you go to church"- not "how often do you go to religious services." Please note I was not AT ALL OFFENDED by this. But it is evidence of the way that the majority in this country thing- that most people here are like them.

ETA: So that is why something like BET is considered acceptable by society. Because most people assume that the other 100 channels are geared towards white people.

I agree. I think when you are in the minority certain things are more acceptable...that is just the way it is.

With people questioning why other cultures cannot have their own events and activities when these groups themselves have been excluded from the "majority" is why we have barely moved forward.

It's the thought process that the majority thinks it must be included within every subculture when they themselves have closen doors for centuries is the problem at hand.

this is what I said yesterday and was then crucified for it and accused of using the race/religion card Chat Icon

on another note, one of my accusations was called asinine and how would I know such a thing (when I told a poster she was not Jewish, so she would not understand). meanwhile, she had posted that she was a white Christian earlier on in the thread.

my personal opinion is that a billboard advertising allwhitedating.com (a legitimate site) would probably get flack, maybe even a protest or 2 (or more). but the bottom line is that all actions here are legal. the billboard, the flack and the protests.

the KKK is a legitimate and legal organization, they are protected under the constitution. as would be an allwhitedating.com billboard, a jdate.com billboard or a blacksingles.com billboard.

just to be sure I got this right... the price you have personally paid for the sins of your forefathers includes a *supposed* whites only dating website billboard, the BET channel, Miss Black USA, jdate, or blacksingles.com?
