I really have to ask...

and this may spark some healthy debate.

I was walking in times square (during matinee day may I add, HELL) and I look up at 47th and Broadway (prime real estate for advertising)

For a long time, a HUGE 3 story, by 2 story sign advertising JDATE (the online dating service especially for Jewish singles) sat there. Now in it's place is another dating service BLACKSINGLES.COM. Now it doesn't bother me an iota, I mean, how the heck else can you meet like-minded people nowadays? And EHARMONY AND MATCH are huge success stories for many people.

But it did conjure up the thought of how WHITESINGLES.COM would go in the same 3 story by 2 story type of advertisement in the middle of Times Square, NY.

Thoughts?

Re: I really have to ask...

such a website would not have a huge advertisment. it would be considered racist. thats the plain truth.

Re: I really have to ask...

Good point. I imgine some people would be upset by it, and/or question the need for such a website.

I don't think it would happen. It's kind of like the "BET debate"

Re: I really have to ask...

yeah, it really gave me a pause. I feel like it would be a media uproar if something had made it that far.

I have often thought of this and could not agree more.
On top of Blacksingles.com AND BET, how about the million man march. I'm not prejudice, I just think it would cause a HUGE uproar if it was the other way around...

Re: I really have to ask...

Here is the thing IMO. I think the best way to describe is is that people assume that someone/something is for white chirstians unless specified otherwise. Minorities, by the mere fact that they are minority, have more leeway to advertise their differences than the majority. Also, ones minority status becomes more of an issue in media and such than someone's white christian status.

Being Jewish, I can speak from that perspective. The fact is, (and I have seen it on this board), people just assume that most people here are Christian. For example, there was post a few weeks ago, "how often do you go to church"- not "how often do you go to religious services." Please note I was not AT ALL OFFENDED by this. But it is evidence of the way that the majority in this country thing- that most people here are like them.

ETA: So that is why something like BET is considered acceptable by society. Because most people assume that the other 100 channels are geared towards white people.

Re: I really have to ask...

What an uproar there would be if that happened!

I always think about things like that...

For example:

The Miss Black USA contest. Can you imagine a Miss White USA???

Or the magazines that are solely for african americans...or college funds etc...if you take any of these situations and substitute "caucasian" you would certainly see a huge uproar.

It does bother me because I feel like we SHOULD be living in a time where it's not about separation...I feel that this is what this does-lumps individuals into two categories...black vs. white.

The religious specified sites I can understand...but color I don't.

I have to disagree.....I wouldn't assume dating sites are ONLY for christian people -- there are all different types of races and religions on them (I should know -- I used to frequent them alot!). African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, etc. are not excluded from them....but having, let's say, a Miss Black America or the like definitely excludes others.

But it is the other way around, on a daily basis.

All your favorite TV shows, movies...the majority - if not all the characters - are geared towards white men (and sometimes women).

I don't see anything wrong with blacksingles.com or jdate or BET. They need their voices too.

I didn't say only. Of course there are people of all races and religion on these sites. But the majority of people on them are probably white and christian.

Also, being a minority, you definitely need to have some pride in your background. Miss Black America started in 1968, as an alternative for black women. THere was no black Miss America until Vanessa Williams in 1983.

Miss America has been historically white. It's only been in the last decade or so that Miss America has actually been of another race.

Because if there was a billboard for whitesingles.com, then Rev. Al Sharpton would be staging a protest in front of it Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think it's only controversial because the majority of non-minorities don't understand the isolation minorities face in the US

I suppose when whites are considered a minority in this country - when it isn't a given that things will be geared towards them - then that voice wouldn't be controversial.

It's kind of moot - basically everything in our society is geared towards and for, white america. Product, positive advertising, tv shows, movies, etc.

I understand where you are coming from...and I think it's wonderful to take pride in your culture. But black women can enter Miss America of course..it does not discriminate (although years ago I'm sure it did unfortunately) but a white woman couldn't enter Miss Black USA, ever...and to me, that shows discrimination.

Maybe the crowned winner has been white, BUT black women enter and compete with other women of different backgrounds, no?

I checked the Miss Black America website, and it doesn't say anything about white women not competing.

But assuming you are right. It is discrimination. But IMO, minorities get a little more leaway when it comes to discriminating against the majority since they are, by definition, the minority. Not to mention the history of discrimination against minorities.
