I am curious why people feel bad for them, delivering in the snow and rain etc, they knew the job description when they applied and that is the motto of the USPO
rain, sleet, snow and what?? lol

edited for spelling

Human compassion.

I just don't understand why human compassion comes in to play for some professions and not others.
What about firefighers? Running into burning buildings, risking their lives?
Cops- wearing bullet proof vests and getting shot at to protect the public?
ER doctors and nurses- on their feet for 24 hour shifts saving lives?
All the above commuting in in awful weather, snow and ice. Working on holidays like Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Do we tip them?

Where is the line drawn?

Why is this always a debate?

You don't have to tip but if you can afford to IMO you should. I have never gotten a ticket or had anything NOT taken by sanitation and it isnt bc I never put out things I shouldn't, it's bc I tip. Chat Icon

I have never gotten a ticket either- and we put out some crazy construction garbage that definitely should be in a dumpster.
And I don't tip.
So maybe it's not related....

I live in the city and I can tell you that they treat you differently if you don't tip, maybe it isnt like that in LI. Either way I think it's a nice gesture.

I can't believe some people leave envelopes - expecting that they will get tips.

We are new homeowners and we will not be tipping the mailmen and garbage men. I don't see the need. If this causes them to do a poorer job for us then that is sad, but I'm not going to bribe people to do what they are paid to do.

Money - we tape an envelope to the inside of the lid for the garbage men. Believe me - they are looking for it

My garbagemen send a card to everyone saying "please don't tape your tip to the can, someone will steal it", and they give a PO Box to mail it to!

Wouldn't thieves be out in fill force checking under can lids and stealing envelopes?

I would never leave it under the lid

I'm sorry but REALLY??? Can that be more tacky??? Here's an address to mail us money. That would make me even LESS inclined to give anything. I think it's nervy to give a postcard and ask for anything.

I don't see it as a tip. Its not like you are giving them a tip every time they pick up the garbage or deliver the mail. Its just a holiday gift just like you would give your child's teacher or a little extra for your hairdresser or nail girl around the holidays.

Same!

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?

I say it every year...

1. Postal workers are Federal employees and not allowed to accept tips.
2. If you're tipping trash people because it leads them "to take the bigger stuff year-round" or a similar reason it isn't a tip, it's a bribe.

My BIL is DSNY and I do believe it is illegal for them to take money.

I know as a cop, my DH wasn't even allowed to take a free cup of coffee from a deli owner. He had to pass money- even if it was 50 cents- because there were actually people from Internal Affairs who would go out and WATCH them to make sure they weren't taking any freebies. They could get in major trouble for it. And I'm talking a slice of pizza or a coffee.
I can't imagine a monetary bribe to do their job a little better. Maybe respond faster if someone calls the police because they greased their palm?
To me that is disgusting.

Let me tell you- city sanitation makes more money than most of us. My BIL gets double time on Sundays and holidays and he is making well over 6 figures now.
He also gets a pension, and amazing benefits for life.
And yet we feel we have to tip them.

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?

I have a family member who is a letter carrier. It's a tough job and their salaries are not as good as Town or City Employees. If I have a good carrier, I give them a gift. When I lived in a 3rd floor walkup, my carrier used to walk packages up to my door and leave them there, so they wouldn't get stolen from the lobby and I didn't have to take time from work to go pick it up from the post office with a baby in tow. I absolutely gave him something at the holidays because that small gesture, which he didn't have to do, made my life much easier.

Garbage men get nothing. They are town employees where I live, but I don't tip because they don't do a great job.

I never really understand why people get so fired up about this. It's like any other gift - teachers, co-workers, etc. if you want to give, you give, if you don't, you don't. I don't care what other people do about gifts at the holidays.

I don't put things out on the days they don't belong out b/c, hey, that's just me. If it is that urgent to get it taken care of, we go to the dumps.
And I don't think that just b/c you can "afford" to tip you should. I prefer to give to charities.

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?

My dh is dsny and they are not allowed to take tips

And he wouldn't throw cans of people who didn't offer etc

I don't get why people go up in arms

I tip mine. I like to. It's the holidays. We get a lot of mail and he is nice

And people tip dsny bc thy think of the snow and the hrs sometimes and picking up your demolished kitchen in 100 degree weather

Again fine if you do fine if you don't but the whole it's their job thing is tired

I tip the guys in the deli when I get sandwiches. U know why bc I like them. And I'm fat and I like my sandwiches

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?

We tip, nothing large, don't see it as a debate. We are tipping for great service and we are happy with our mailmen, garbage men, and newspaper delivery men. It is just a small holiday gift. I also give cards and cookies to neighbors, just a way to spread cheer.Only newspaper delivery men leave an envelope because how would you tip them. They just give us a Christmas card with their return address. No worries about people taking garbagemen's envelope either.

Gift for mailman and garbage men?

I just checked my mailbox and a Christmas card from DH's friend and his wife featuring a professional photo of them arrived ripped in half.

I will now definitely be tipping the mail carrier because I cannot stand DH's friend, his wife, or their obnoxious Christmas cards and they saved me the trouble of ripping it up myself.

That's not true. I have had a lot of real life discussions about this as well.

People feel obligated to tip, afraid that their service will suffer if they don't. That is not right IMO.
