Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?

This is our first christmas as homeowners. I always remember my parents putting a bottle of wine in the mailbox for the mailman. Do people still do this? What do I do about the garbage collectors? Do I give them cash? Do they split it? How do I give it to them? Wait outside and had them an envelope?
I might be in the minority on this post.
Do you HAVE to tip garbage and mail? No.
Should you? Yes.
I am of VERY solid opinion that if you tip them you get better service. You should not have to, but the FACT is you WILL get better service if you tip them....
...and they remember during the year. They are MUCH less likely to go out of their way to do something for you.
We may not like it, but its the way it is.
$20 for the mailman and $30-$40 for the garbage men go a LONG way.
This is my humble opinion.
I've never tipped either my mailman or garbage men and I get the EXACT same service as the rest of my neighborhood. My mail is in the mailbox every day and my garbage is picked up on garbage day.
I truly don't see a need to tip someone who is salaried. This is their job, I don't feel like I need to reward them for doing the job they are paid for. Between gifts for family, friends, teachers, bus drivers, dance teachers, etc I HAVE to draw the line somewhere. It's just getting to be too much this time of year. I give something extra to the people I feel go above and beyond, like a teacher, but in all honesty, my garbage men and mailman do nothing special. So I don't tip.

For me, where I live now, I do pretty much get the same mail guy daily. He seems nice, I haven't really spoken to him but he smiled a few times in passing. He actually WALKS - in my little village the mail people walk from door to door. We don't even have mailboxes at the curb, every house has a mailbox at their door. So, maybe because of that I should tip him??
Out of curiousity, don't the mail people always walk from door to door? Are most mailboxes not at the front door?
This is how it always has been anywhere I'd been on LI. I had no idea it was any different anywhere else. Learn something new every day. LOL!

My mailbox is at the curb. When I lived in Nassau it was at the front door. When I moved to Suffolk a lot of mailboxes were at the curb. They don't have to get out of the truck- they drive right up to it.

No, many carriers are on a rural route and drive a truck to the box. Half our neighborhood has boxes at the street, half at the door.

I'm in Suffolk County, our mailboxes are at the curb and the mailman drives from box to box. He's not walking anywhere. LOL

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
We do not give any gifts. Service had been fine, I don't think it makes a difference. Garbage is picked up, mail is delivered. I prefer to keep what I can for my family, I don't see the point of handing out money, just because.

I don't tip.people who are paid to do a job. Just as I don't receive tips for my job which I am paid for. Hair stylists, waitresses, bartenders, who work on tips, yes. Salaried employees, no.
yes to this! I appreciate the efforts of our garbage and mail men and women and I am sure they go the extra mile, just as I do at my job. tokens of appreciation are always a nice thing but I don't expect them at my job.
I just don't have it in my budget to start tipping or giving small gifts (that end up being regifted?) to everyone that I come across in life- there's daycare workers, afterschool care workers, teachers, bosses etc. there is just no end.
but to answer your question, that is really nice of you and I am sure they would greatly appreciate it!! if you can swing it, by all means but I wouldn't feel obligated.

Gift for mailman and garbage men?
My mail person is always different so I won't be giving to them.
Sanitation we give 20 or 25 to each of them (there are 2). In our area those who don't tip have their pails in the middle of the street just thrown, our guys walk ours back to in front of our house everyday. For me it is worth the money to have my pails in front of my house everyday, not saying it is right that they throw them but it is fact and w two young kids I cant be chasing pails up and down my block all day lol

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
Oh yes, I should clarify...
I grew up in Suffolk from around three years old on... and we always had various mail people drive in those little mail vans up to the mailbox, which was at the curb next to the driveway, and deliver the mail. My entire life living with my parents in Suffolk (Smithtown) that was the way it was.
So, when I bought my house in Saint James I realized, wow NO ONE has mailboxes at the curb - they all have these cute little mailboxes hung by their front door. And we have the same mail guy who walks door to door and delivers the mail - right up to our door. I mean, I have seen the guy ALL over. He must walk miles and miles a day - and in the rain, snow, and I remember feeling so bad one day because it was literally 100 degrees out! Crazy! Needless to say, he's in great shape

Gift for mailman and garbage men?
I love when this comes up every year.
I always wonder if the mail carrier on the board that actually admitted they give cr@ppier service if you don't tip will say the same thing again.
ETA: I don't tip either of them, for the same reasons as everyone else.

I don't see it as a tip. Its not like you are giving them a tip every time they pick up the garbage or deliver the mail. Its just a holiday gift just like you would give your child's teacher or a little extra for your hairdresser or nail girl around the holidays.
I agree with this. Every job I've had, salaried, I received a holiday bonus...and I greatly appreciated it. After a year of doing a good job it's nice to be acknowledged.
Not trying to argue with you but I am salaried and get nada at holiday time. I provide a public service and work my butt off. No one tips me (in fact, we're forbidden to accept any type of 'tip' aside from food) and I don't get any type of bonus. I don't tip people unless they specifically work for tips.

Growing up we always had a box at the curb too but since living in apts in various towns (and both Nassau & Suffolk) they have all been walking routes. It was only in Northport that we had the box at the curb and thinking back friends had boxes up at the house.
I actually think there are more walking routes than driving but have nothing but personal experience to back that up.
No matter how they deliver the mail does not change my opinion on tipping! (this part has nothing to do with quoting the PP)

I'm private sector and I get NOTHING at holiday time either. My company bonuses us based on a specific bonus plan that are tied to our performance as individuals and as a company. It also ties in to profitability for the year. We get them quarertly and it's all dependent on how well we do in that quarter. We don't just get a bonus because hey it's Dec 25th!

To me, a tip is just saying "thanks for your service throughout the year. We appreciate you." That's all. It's optional. If my garbage or mail service was terrible, I would not tip.

I have never once in my 19 years of working salaried since college received a holiday bonus.
I received candy from one boss one year.
I do receive a performance based bonus at year end (June 30).
But never anything to say happy holidays we appreciate you.
And IMO that is the mail carrier and the garbage people's employers job to do not mine.

They don't get anything.. and guess what? They still do their job (just fine too)!
They take the garbage whether it's 1 pail, 2 pails or a ton of stuff. The mailman puts the mail in the slot every single time without problems.

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
In the past, I would give my mail woman around $20. My current mail woman screamed at me through the door once because I was taking to long to answer so she gets a big fat f-u.
My garbage men don't always pick up on days when they are supposed to so they get nothing. Seriously, there have been days where I push my can back to the house still full.
Ahh, I can't wait to move out of this town. If I like my new mail/garbage people once I move, I will probably give around $10-$15

Gift for mailman and garbage men?
I give to the mailman, because he is actually a friend of a friend and we see him at parties etc so I would feel weird not doing it.
The garbage men I never see. Every year they leave a post card with their names, in fact I just got this years postcard and it actually says please don't tape envelopes to the garbage pail tops because they've been stolen in the past, which wouldn't surprise me since I've seen people going through the garbages looking for cans to cash. I just find that so tacky and rude!! I'm not going out of my way to tip them.

Yeah, I just feel for them being out there carrying heavy mail bags, smelling who knows what in all kinds of weather. The body pains they must feel after a day of work, I wouldn't want to do their job. I'm happy to give someone I like, who helps me out during the year a little gift. On a side note though, I despise tip jars in stores & I never put money in there.

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
Why is this always a debate?
You don't have to tip but if you can afford to IMO you should. I have never gotten a ticket or had anything NOT taken by sanitation and it isnt bc I never put out things I shouldn't, it's bc I tip.
