What is an appropriate gift to give to the mailman and garbage man?

This is our first year owning a single family home. DH doesn't want to tip but I plan to get them something.

Should I put cash in a Christmas card and tape it to the garbage can and mailbox?

Is $20 sufficient?

How much do you give?

We give the mailman $20 each year. And I also think that is the limit they are technically allowed to accept in the form of cash (although I can't imagine anyone ever asks them!).

ETA: If I am prepared I stick it in a Happy Holidays card and hand it to him, but more often I see him on my way out and fish a $20 out of my bag for him. He is great - and always sends us a thank you card :)

Thanks to our friendly LIF postal reprentative, I've learned that the size of the tip should be directly proportional to how much you enjoy actually receiving your mail. Chat Icon

My sons often look out the window and watch the garbage men come. I will have the boys ready to walk out to hand out cards this Thursday.

I give 20 and a plate of cookies to the mailman. This year times are REALLY tight.. so he'll get a tin of cookies and a 10 Gift Card.

I give the garbagemen a tray of cookies.

What is an appropriate gift to give to the mailman and garbage man?

I have three sanitation workers that do my pick-up and I am putting $60 in a Holiday Money Holder Card and DH is going to hand it to them.

For the mailperson, I am putting $20 in a Holiday Money Holder card and placing it in the mailbox.

Re: What is an appropriate gift to give to the mailman and garbage man?

I don't give anything to the mail man as he is a fellow federal employee who is not allowed to accept gifts. Secondly, i don't tip the mail man because ours is always late and our mail man is always down the road at a neighbors house for hours when we are waiting for our mail.

I do tip the garbage men, usually $20 each, we have 2.

I was a mail carrier for 10 years in Levittown.

The average tip is $20-25 although some give more & less...sometimes even homemade cookies & gifts.

As far as the time goes, there is NO scheduled time for mail. It just needs to be at your house by the end of day usually around 5pm. Where i Live in east meadow, my street is the last one. We never get our mail until 4:30pm

I give the mailman $20 - I put it in my mailbox (attached to the house). It usually takes a few tries for him to take it.

For the garbage men - I hand it to them. It's going to be more difficult this year since they have been coming earlier when I usually am taking the kids to daycare. I tried to tape it to the lid one year and went to throw out something additional and it had fallen into the can so I didn't want to chance it getting thrown out.

Ali, if it took a few tries for him to take it, he may have been off.

We give our mailman and garbage men $20 cash each. We do it bc we want to, not bc we feel forced to though

Mailmen are allowed to receive tips and there is no limit as to what they can accept.

I know one personally and he busts his rear year round in the hot summer, rainy days, and freezing cold.

The person I know depends on his tips.

I agree with this... I don't like eating stuff someone I don't know made. I am always amazed at work when I bring in extra baked goods and leave them in the kitchen, they're always gone by lunch time and no one knows who even put them there!

I give our mailman $20 and our garbage men $60 we THINK there are 3 of them.

Re: What is an appropriate gift to give to the mailman and garbage man?

This year sanitation is getting $60 and my mailman is getting $40.

Mail carriers will have NO problem accepting tips/gifts over $20. Believe me on that.

I don't eat anything from strangers, but men don't seem to care! My mom gives her village police a tray of homemade cookies at Christmas. She said the first year she did it, she didn't even get a chance to tell her name or address, they already had them opened and eaten!

Actually, mailmen cannot accept more than $20.
Mine will get $0.

Just read this:
Postal employees may accept gifts valued up to $20, but cannot accept cash.

Interesting.
