Only on LIF people have a issue with this
That's not true. I have had a lot of real life discussions about this as well.
People feel obligated to tip, afraid that their service will suffer if they don't. That is not right IMO.
IMO that's silly
If you get bad service it's bc u have a ****** worker and no tip will change that
I would never tip out of fear
I tip bc it's the holidays and appreciation

I just checked my mailbox and a Christmas card from DH's friend and his wife featuring a professional photo of them arrived ripped in half.
I will now definitely be tipping the mail carrier because I cannot stand DH's friend, his wife, or their obnoxious Christmas cards and they saved me the trouble of ripping it up myself.
Best response of the thread!

I say it every year...
1. Postal workers are Federal employees and not allowed to accept tips. 2. If you're tipping trash people because it leads them "to take the bigger stuff year-round" or a similar reason it isn't a tip, it's a bribe.
My BIL is DSNY and I do believe it is illegal for them to take money.
I know as a cop, my DH wasn't even allowed to take a free cup of coffee from a deli owner. He had to pass money- even if it was 50 cents- because there were actually people from Internal Affairs who would go out and WATCH them to make sure they weren't taking any freebies. They could get in major trouble for it. And I'm talking a slice of pizza or a coffee. I can't imagine a monetary bribe to do their job a little better. Maybe respond faster if someone calls the police because they greased their palm? To me that is disgusting.
Let me tell you- city sanitation makes more money than most of us. My BIL gets double time on Sundays and holidays and he is making well over 6 figures now. He also gets a pension, and amazing benefits for life. And yet we feel we have to tip them.
Wanted to say some DSNY do make a lot of money. But Not if they are new on the job. Their salary is practically impossible to live off of for the first few years until they can obtain seniority and/or move up in rank. I know this bc my brother is DSNY for only 3 years years and he's still not making much. Eventually, hopefully, yes, he will be making a lot more.
I just felt the need to say that bc so many people think they get $ right off the bat and are lucky to have the job. it sure isn't always easy working sanitation. That's why I always tip for the holidays or if we have a shit ton of trash.
i think tipping is s personal preference like so many things. Some people do it, other think it's BS.
We give $20 per Sanitation worker (we leave note on can saying please check mailbox) $20 for Mail Carrier Actually, come ot think of it, i think it's $20's all around per person. Landscapers, etc.
It's just in our nature to tip. And I know it's very much appreciated. Just as I appreciate when my boss gives me a holiday bonus.

Gift for mailman and garbage men?
My mail person is not careful. I get mail that looks opened once in a while and I received all of my original documents back in a completely opened envelope from the passport service. The mail person and postmaster were both unapologetic. I had to file a complaint above my postmasters head. Needless to say, I do not tip them.
As for our garbage men, I give them tips throughout the year. We also give them something for the holiday. A few years ago DH wanted to take care of this but he missed them Christmas week so on January 2nd he was ready early when he heard the truck. He decided to give a little extra because he was late. As I watched him run out to give to them I noticed the guys were not our usual guys, then I noticed the truck looked different. Turns out our town started a contract with a new company for the new year! It was their first day! We laughed so hard, the guys were probably so happy!

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
My mailman we leave a card in the mailbox with cash. Usually about $30, but our regular mail mans been out on leave so the temp we may give $10.
The garbage men leave us a card with their names. My parents always taped the envelopes to the trash cans, but since we live on a busy road DH tries to catch them in the morning.
Here's a helpful hint... If you leave your garbage men a good Christmas tip, they'll be more apt to take anything you put at the curb.

Town of Islip is changing collectors this year. DH and I said we'd still give our outgoing garbage men a gift, but probably not as much as we usually would since they are leaving and cash flow is tight.

I have to agree.
I've basically gutted my whole house, put a ton by the curb, have NEVER tipped, and they have always taken everything. If they didn't take things because I didn't tip them I'd be filing complaints with the town because it's there job to remove garbage, tip or no tip.

I don't tip.people who are paid to do a job. Just as I don't receive tips for my job which I am paid for. Hair stylists, waitresses, bartenders, who work on tips, yes. Salaried employees, no.
I do not work on tips but I do tip the mailman etc.... Hair stylists, bartenders etc... all receive a shift pay as well so why wouldn't you tip? Just curious lol

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
I will be giving our mailman something, probably $20. We like him, he does a good job, we can swing it and I think it's a nice gesture. I have no doubt he would do just as good a job without a gift.
This year we aren't tipping the garbage men. I don't really know them or recognize them like I do our mailman. And whenever we need to put out construction materials or heavy/bulky items, I make sure to do it on a day I am home, and I run out and give them a few extra bucks to thank them for taking everything right then. I think that is sufficient, and I don't even think I should need to do that, but I'm ok with it.

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
I know this seems to be a heated subject every year. But we do tip our mailman, just get him something like a $20 gc to dunkin donuts because I definitely do notice when he has a substitute mailperson. When he isn't there our mail is all over the place and sometimes ends up across the street w/ our neighbor. Our mail person neatly rubberbands everything together. We don't tip our garbage men though because we had a bad experience when we first moved into our house and they wouldn't take anything (wasn't even construction material).

I agree. We don't tip, and never had anything left behind! If you want to give extra, that is very nice. Don't do it because you feel like you are getting extra service.

This is our first christmas as homeowners. I always remember my parents putting a bottle of wine in the mailbox for the mailman. Do people still do this? What do I do about the garbage collectors? Do I give them cash? Do they split it? How do I give it to them? Wait outside and had them an envelope?
I might be in the minority on this post.
Do you HAVE to tip garbage and mail? No.
Should you? Yes.
I am of VERY solid opinion that if you tip them you get better service. You should not have to, but the FACT is you WILL get better service if you tip them....
...and they remember during the year. They are MUCH less likely to go out of their way to do something for you.
We may not like it, but its the way it is.
$20 for the mailman and $30-$40 for the garbage men go a LONG way.
This is my humble opinion.
I agree with this 100%!! I always tip the mailman $25 and the garbage men $50 at Christmas. They do a good job, are always friendly and I don't mind doing it at all.

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
I no longer tip my garbage men at all. They put a postcard in my mailbox every year where I can sent a tip but they can not put a thank you note in there when I do. So no more.
My mail lady is a different story. She is amazing. And goes above and beyond for me so I get her something very small in giftcard form. And guess what, she leaves me a thank you note ! She at least shows appreciation, unlike my garbage men !

Haha. You can't make this stuff up. No tip from me simply because of the card. There's a po box on the back.

The bottom says "please don't place envelopes on top of the garbage can. In the past these things have been stolen"...

Can I just ask why some of you are upset that you are asked not to take the tip to cans or that they provide a po box? It doesn't mean you have to tip but if you do...don't you want to make sure it gets to them? I would much rather mail it to the garbage guys then hope they see where I taped it on the can.

Because their shift pay is generally not a livable wage. Why don't you tip your insurance salesman, your doctor, the cop who responds to your fender bender? Why do we tip only mailmen and garbage men?

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
I just told my boss I will no longer provide top notch service to any of our customers who don't tip. I will help, them, just not as well as those who grease my palm at Christmas. The one's who don't pay me a bribe will be at the bottom of my list to assist when they call or email or have an issue. He didn't take too kindly to it... I guess it's because I am not a mail carrier or santitation worker. Or maybe because I didn't send out the postcards telling my customers where to send their tips. Gotta get on that PO box thing!
