Gift for mailman and garbage men?
This is our first christmas as homeowners. I always remember my parents putting a bottle of wine in the mailbox for the mailman. Do people still do this? What do I do about the garbage collectors? Do I give them cash? Do they split it? How do I give it to them? Wait outside and had them an envelope?

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
I give my mailman cash, the one we have now is terrible so I'll probably give him $10. I also give $ to the garbage men, usually about $60 (we put out a lot of garbage) and there is 3 of them, that being said they come at 5am and it takes me weeks to finally wake up on time to give it to them:) I also tip the UPS man because he comes to my house practically everyday and me and my kids are on a first name basis with him.

Gift for mailman and garbage men?
Our garbage men leave postcards in our mailboxes with holiday greetings (and a po box for money lol). We mail them checks (they give is their names).
Mailman we will give wine and cash. He's great and always driving up our really long driveway and hand delivering our stuff when he sees my car in the driveway and if we have packages.

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
My mailman is awful so he gets nothing. I put money in an envelope for my garbage men and catch them one morning while they are picking up the garbage. I hand it to the driver and I assume they all split it up.

I don't tip.people who are paid to do a job. Just as I don't receive tips for my job which I am paid for. Hair stylists, waitresses, bartenders, who work on tips, yes. Salaried employees, no.

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
I gave my old mailman a gift card. My current one is the pits- our box is at the foot of our driveway and if he thinks he can get away with putting packages on top of the box he does and they end up in the street.
Sorry to rant and hijack. We have given our garbage men cash, but not a lot. I am always hesitant to give alcohol to people I don't know well- they could be in recovery or on meds that don't mix with booze or just non drinkers.

I'm just learning that this is a thing and I have to agree. I don't know about LI, but in the city sanitation workers who have been on the job for a few years can make well over 6 figures. Do I think they have an easy job? Absolutely not, but neither do I or doctors or nurses or teachers and no one is tipping them.
I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but I'm paying an exorbitant amount in taxes to live on LI, and I'm not then tipping the very people my taxes are providing a salary for.
And the only time I've ever seen them is when they purposely block the entire street when I'm driving to the train station to get to my (tip-free) job. So....there's that, too.

I think its disgusting for any of them to leave cards so $$ or gifts can be sent to them directly. Mailmen are not suppose to take cash gifts and not over a certain amount, the same I think for garbage men I notice people who tip get away with putting more thann the allowed wt of garbage out etc,

Do you HAVE to tip garbage and mail? No.
Should you? Yes.
I am of VERY solid opinion that if you tip them you get better service. You should not have to, but the FACT is you WILL get better service if you tip them....
...and they remember during the year. They are MUCH less likely to go out of their way to do something for you.
We may not like it, but its the way it is.
$20 for the mailman and $30-$40 for the garbage men go a LONG way.
This is my humble opinion.

What better service do you get? I put the trash and recycling out on the proper day, they dump the cans and put them back on the end of my driveway. If I have bulk stuff, it goes out on bulk day, they take it. I really am not being snarky, I just don't understand what "better" service I would get with tipping? Same for the mailman...they put stuff in the mailbox, end of story.

I don't see it as a tip. Its not like you are giving them a tip every time they pick up the garbage or deliver the mail. Its just a holiday gift just like you would give your child's teacher or a little extra for your hairdresser or nail girl around the holidays.

I agree with this. Every job I've had, salaried, I received a holiday bonus...and I greatly appreciated it. After a year of doing a good job it's nice to be acknowledged.

Gift for mailman and garbage men?
I don't tip the mailman, I get wet mail ALL the time. Plus he doesn't go above and beyond to deserve a gift from me.
The garbage men we do give them $20 each. They don't mind if I throw a bag to the curb without the can (when I'm running to catch them), they take everything I put out, they are very courteous, and they always make sure to stand the cans back up instead of tossing them to let them roll in the street. They wave to my kids, and just overall nice people.

I completely agree. Those who not only do their job but go above and beyond to make my life a little easier get tipped.
We tip our mailman $50 each year because he does a great job and is a very personable guy who we've come to know very well.
We don't tip our garbage men.
We also tip our dog groomers extra this time of the year because they put up with our dog even though he isn't the easiest to groom....and they do it all with a smile.

I agree.. ESPECIALLY tipping the mailman. Poor guy is delivering mail in sweltering heat & freezing cold... pouring rain & snow.. A $10 Starbucks gift card is the least I can do & wont make or break me. I know if someone was kind enough to even think of me during the holidays to give me a gift card, I would be very appreciative.

Gift for mailman and garbage men?
I have never tipped garbage man/postal workers. But, I was thinking of giving something to the mailman this year, only because I've had a lot of packages come and go this year and he has been great about it. I feel like he deserves it. But, no, I don't think my garbage men need a gift from me.

For the record i have never "tipped" and I have never had an issue with my mail being delivered or my trash being picked up. And DH does a TON of home improvements and puts out a TON of construction garbage and they take it all. Jeez, doing their job even though they didn't get a "tip"- what a concept!!!

I see it more as showing appreciation for them doing a good job. It's not like my garbage pails are stood up nicely at the curb while non tippers' cans are tossed around down the street. I think they either do a good job or they don't. I tip my guys bc I think they do a good job. If they didn't, I wouldn't bother. I don't tip our UPS guy even though he's here constantly bc he does the bare minimum. I might tip him if he bothered to take half a second to knock when he leaves the packages.

I never had an issue either. up until two years ago I gave baked goods to my mailman, because after knowing him for years we knew he loved sweets, He had the nerve to knock on my door to tell me the quantity should be more. That year I almost didn't give because I was 5 months into a cancer diagnosis, and very tired. But felt bad. NO more, we had a conversation about it, after he told me WHY it should be more and what else we can give. I told him I don't have to give anything you get paid for your job, and that he should be grateful for having a JOB bc I didn't at the time. I had cancer, but didn't want him to think we forgot him. A tip no matter what it is or the amount is a token of thanks. I told him if he didn't like the amount or what we gave he wont like what we give the following year, NOTHING. DO YOUR FN job.
I said it before on many posts, LI/NY thinks the world needs to be tipped for everything, that service is better, GO outside this stat, people do their job and don't expect to be tipped
I don't tip the garbage men and they still wave, say hi , take my garbage and place my pails in the same place they found them, standing up!
I will say, in general people who tip the garbage man do it bc many times they are putting out more then the allowed amt of pails and wt, and they are paying off the garbage men not to report. IMO and from what see and hear while sitting in on community meeting

Gift for mailman and garbage men?
I tip the mailman, but ONLY because ours is nice and goes above and beyond. When we get packages, he walks them all the way around back and leaves them by the back door so they don't get stolen. And he will leave a note on my mail that a package is around back.
My garbageman get nothing. They probably make more than I do, and I don't get tips.
I don't tip anyone else.

We always tip our mail lady and garbage men. We have a son with Autism, and they go out of their way to make him happy!!! She gave the boys a collectors Harry Potter stamps. The garbage men always honk for my son. Let his sit in the front seat one time.

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
I'm a somewhat new homeowner - so, this is new to me too. Growing up, my parents never tipped the garbage men and stuff. Also, the mail people growing up were ALWAYS different - we never really had the same person.
For me, where I live now, I do pretty much get the same mail guy daily. He seems nice, I haven't really spoken to him but he smiled a few times in passing. He actually WALKS - in my little village the mail people walk from door to door. We don't even have mailboxes at the curb, every house has a mailbox at their door. So, maybe because of that I should tip him??
This is an interesting thread because of the different opinions.
I kind of see both sides and the points that everyone is making so I'm stumped!

Re: Gift for mailman and garbage men?
I guess I shouldn't say tip...we give a little holiday gift to our mailman and groomers. Because we have a nice relationship with them in my opinion.
It's almost like our neighbors...we only give gifts to those that we have a nice relationship with...it's not tipping them for doing a good job of being our neighbor...it's cause we care about them.
ETA: The tipping that I don't feel is necessary are the tip buckets at self service places...those I don't agree with.
