To all non-state people,
We know you don't understand. Generally, we don't try to explain. Unless you are a Buckeye or Fighting Irish, you probably don't get how an institution embeds itself in a student's life. And that is fine. But right now, we want you to know this: We are distraught and truly sickened by this horror perpetrated on young victims by one who represented the Blue and White, and perpetuated by others at the University. We aren't blind followers who drink Blue Kool-Aid. We grieve for and with the victims and their families. We pray for them to find healing and peace and a way to live a good life. We know that while many people had responsibility, the most visible one almost always goes down first. We are not disputing the need for this to happen. We are not "defending" anything. We are simply crushed and heartbroken. This is not the Penn State we love, the Penn State that is part of our being. What you know of Joe Paterno probably comes from television or magazine articles. We know the man who has lived in the same McKee St house for decades. We have chatted with him as he walked to practice. We have eaten ice cream with him at the Creamery. We have studied in the new library wing his money helped build. We have visited the sports museum and spiritual center he also helped build. We have seen him cheering on other Penn State athletes. We know he loves Penn State as much as we do. Some of our friends, brothers, husbands, sons have been privileged to put on the Blue and White uniform and listen to 100,000 fans in Beaver Stadium. We know how hard they have worked, how much time they have devoted, how many of them have been part of an excellent scholar/athlete legacy...and how much they love this man and this program. We aren't stupid or naive. We know Joe Paterno has culpability. We know he could have made different choices - he admitted that. We don't think he is God or always perfect or saintly. But he is the greatest college football coach ever, and he is PSU family, and we don't want his exit to be like this. WE ARE...not closing our eyes, ignoring reports, pretending this isn't a wretched occurrence. WE ARE...angry that innocents would be violated under our care. WE ARE...in support of appropriate punishment for every person involved. WE ARE...demanding change to a system that would allow this. WE ARE...not concerned if you do not understand our love and devotion. WE ARE...PENN STATE proud and we will rise again.
are you kidding me with this sh!t ??? Get off LIF....you disgust me.

mrsBLT, honestly, it disturbs me that you can't see that what you posted implies that the students and alumni of Penn State see THEMSELVES as the victims, and not the poor CHILDREN who were sexually abused. You're making it about YOU and not the REAL victims.
I don't care if you (the general you) got your PhD there and now your "reputation" is tarnished. Sandusky ruined the lives of many young boys. Your degree means NOTHING to me in the light of these events.

Re: Did we discuss the Penn State scandal? (includes Grand Jury Report)
ITA. That is an excellent view on it.
To extrapolate portions I really felt were significant:
When it all comes down to it, this is not a Penn State issue, but a human issue.
All this week, we have tried to convey the message to the world that Penn State is more than just football, but we have not proven that. As my close friend, and fellow Penn State student, Josh Branch put it: The whole country is watching how a university claims to be more than just “X,Y, and Z” then riots and destroys a town over, “X, Y, and Z. We have been worried about the unwarranted shame that Sandusky and those involved has brought to Penn State, but the shame is on us now. Throughout the entire riot, students were screaming “WE ARE PENN STATE.” However, if our actions last night are what Penn State symbolizes, then I want nothing to do with Penn State.
However, it is never too late to remedy our transgressions. It is time that we take our passion and give it aim. Let us all come together peacefully and heal this broken family. We must become informed, seek to better the lives of the victims in any way possible, and never settle until this administration understands reputation and money never comes before morals

Re: Did we discuss the Penn State scandal? (includes Grand Jury Report)
I'll probably get flamed for this but whatever.
I went to Penn State. I am horrified about what has happened from the abuse to the coverups to the riots. I agree 100% with the firing of Joe Paterno and everyone else. I am disgusted that Mike McQueary is coaching on Saturday. I am so sad for those boys and their families.
That all being said, I am going to make a (very poor and unequal comparison). My Ex-husband cheated on me. I was with him since I was in high school (15 years). I trusted him 100%. I never once doubted his loyalty to me and our DD until the day he walked and I found out he was cheating. 2.5 years later, I am still trying to reconcile how the man I loved and trusted with my whole heart could be a man who cheats on his wife and walks out on his daughter. People on the outside have a much easier time calling him an A$$hole and calling it a day, but for me, I am angry for what he did but it takes time to integrate it into my view of him.
This is what is happening for many Penn State students, staff and alumni. We are trying to understand how a man who had appeared to be so incredibly positively influential for over 60 years could act (or not act) in this way. It doesn't mean we agree or sympathize and are not ANGRY and DISGUSTED, it just means we have a host of complicated emotions and not nearly as clear cut for someone on the outside.
It is also very hard because the horrible (in)actions of several men are overshadowing all of the amazing things that happen at Penn State and that hurts. I know that it is insignificant compared to the abuse and pain that the boys experienced. Im not trying to compare but rather just explain why this is so difficult on many levels.
Yesterday was not only the day Joe Paterno was fired but it marked 100 days to THON, a 48 hour dance marathon. Most people don't know what THON is but it is the largest student run philanthropy in the country (probably world now) and is 100% student run. Last year the student's raised nearly $10 Million for children with cancer at Hershey Medical Center. This is a HUGE event that has grown tenfold (no exaggeration) since I was a freshman in the spring of 1996. Over the years, it has probably raised nearly $100 million. This event was a formative part of my college experience. I fundraised with my sorority and danced as a senior. I wish Penn State was in the news yesterday for the coutdown to this amazing event but instead it was for this tragedy.
The entire thing is a travesty.

Talk about perpetuating the stereotype that those who attend these schools think they are better than. Kids were raped and people are sad their hero was fired. Boo fukin hoo. Unreal.

But this is NOT about PENN STATE. It could be ANY school.
It's about a predator that raped and molested children on school grounds. About MANY people who knew about this and witnessed it. About a cover up by higher ups of a "school".
It really does not matter what school it is. Really! It does not.
And crying for the school itself and it's reputation, reputation of students, is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT to this tragedy.

Little Teddy Bundy was a sweet guy... when he wasn't killing co-eds.
BTK (Dennis Rader) worked security and was a dog catcher for the neighborhood... when he wasn't doing that silly little Bind, Torture, Kill thing on the side.

Exactly how did you mean for that Hoo Rah Penn State if-you're-not-a-stater-you-just-don't-get-it to come across? Were you implying that you were MORE affected by this than other people? (victim mentality) Or were you implying that you can see why this was covered up because of the institutional mentality? (which is disturbing) I guess I'm just not seeing what the point of the whole shpiel was.

I know about THON and this has nothing to do with it. Again its about the poor defenseless boys that were RAPED. Not about your beloved school or your ex-husband. The fact that people keep writing how great the school is on the thread about the abused victims means ish.
If I was a PS alumni, I'd be disgusted with the fact that the school I loved was involved with this abuse and cover up. And THAT'S what this is about. Not how Joe Pa gave kids ice cream. How THON raises money. How the school spirit is huge there.
it's about the VICTIMS, being those boys. The victims aren't Penn State students and their complicated feelings over the issue.

Yep, BTK killer was a BOY SCOUT TROUP leader...active church member.
Ted Bundy worked on a teen phone line, helping them through their problems
And there are tons of others...

Because those people are part of the cover up!!!!
Did you read the Grand Jury Report? You will see why people are talking about them.
They cannot disclose the name and face of those victims.
People are well aware of the crimes, the monster and what he did.
Now people are targetting the "school" because they have allowed this monster to keep raping and molesting children FOR YEARS. Victims that did not need to be victims.
Those people who mentioned by their actions, OR LACK OF THEM, have ALLOWED him to keep doing it over and over to many more children.
Heads are going to fall on this. Not just the monster but those who failed to report the abuse and covered it up.
And yes, it quite disgusting that so many people knew and never did one thing except making sure it was never reported.

i don't see myself or anyone that went to penn state as a victim. i see the children as victims. i don't support anyone that had anything to do with any of this, including joe paterno and all of the penn state staff that knew. but i do still support penn state, the educational institution that gave me opportunities i wouldn't have had otherwise.
this is an ONLINE forum. you can't HEAR the way i say things, so maybe you misinterpreted the way i meant things to come across. it's an online forum - if you think i'm selfish, disgusting, self righteous, whatever then don't read my posts, but ftr i am none of those things and do not condone or support anything that happened to those children.
But this is NOT about PENN STATE. It could be ANY school.
It's about a predator that raped and molested children on school grounds. About MANY people who knew about this and witnessed it. About a cover up by higher ups of a "school".
It really does not matter what school it is. Really! It does not.
And crying for the school itself and it's reputation, reputation of students, is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT to this tragedy.
i agree with you, bad sadly the media has made it about penn state. when is the last time you heard a news report on this saying anything about jerry sandusky or those 9 children? everything is about penn state, graham spanier, joe paterno and mike mcqueary.
Of course they say Penn State...that's what people recognize I will pray for you

I didn't have to HEAR anything. Whether you wrote it or not, by posting it, you attached your name to it.
(which is disturbing) I guess I'm just not seeing what the point of the whole shpiel was.
no those posts were meant to respond to posts about how anyone be anything but happy that joe paterno was fired. they were meant to express the confusion, disgust, disbelief, and SADNESS that many people are feeling.
i don't need to defend myself or my posts. i know what i meant by them and so do other people that have been fming me. just because some people on here think i'm disgusting and pathetic for posting things i feel, doesn't mean i'm a monster. i don't support anything that happened to those boys. period. bottom line.

Re: Did we discuss the Penn State scandal? (includes Grand Jury Report)
Why do I get the feeling if this was another school - like for example, SUNY Binghamton or something - that the students wouldn't come off this...self-entitled? self-concerned? image-concerned? I can't think of the right word. Does anyone get a sense of what I'm trying to say but can't eloquently explain? Just my own observation, and not just here, but also by reading other outlets and comments, etc.

I'm not asking you to defend but obviously I'm not the only one who is questioning it and the implications associated with it.
I always love hearing about secret FMs. I am trying to remain mostly respectful here, though this issue infuriates me to no end, so why won't these secret FMers come forward and post their (mostly respectful) points of view?

Re: Did we discuss the Penn State scandal? (includes Grand Jury Report)
My DH's friend just wrote this on his FB wall
The amount of phone calls, texts, FB messages, and emails I've been getting about Penn State is crazy. Here's all I gotta say about the situation. It's horrible. I have always had INSANE pride in my college, but at this point there's nothing for me to be proud of. I'll never NOT be a Nittany Lion. I just hope someday I can be PROUD that I am.
