To all non-state people,
We know you don't understand. Generally, we don't try to explain. Unless you are a Buckeye or Fighting Irish, you probably don't get how an institution embeds itself in a student's life. And that is fine. But right now, we want you to know this: We are distraught and truly sickened by this horror perpetrated on young victims by one who represented the Blue and White, and perpetuated by others at the University. We aren't blind followers who drink Blue Kool-Aid. We grieve for and with the victims and their families. We pray for them to find healing and peace and a way to live a good life. We know that while many people had responsibility, the most visible one almost always goes down first. We are not disputing the need for this to happen. We are not "defending" anything. We are simply crushed and heartbroken. This is not the Penn State we love, the Penn State that is part of our being. What you know of Joe Paterno probably comes from television or magazine articles. We know the man who has lived in the same McKee St house for decades. We have chatted with him as he walked to practice. We have eaten ice cream with him at the Creamery. We have studied in the new library wing his money helped build. We have visited the sports museum and spiritual center he also helped build. We have seen him cheering on other Penn State athletes. We know he loves Penn State as much as we do. Some of our friends, brothers, husbands, sons have been privileged to put on the Blue and White uniform and listen to 100,000 fans in Beaver Stadium. We know how hard they have worked, how much time they have devoted, how many of them have been part of an excellent scholar/athlete legacy...and how much they love this man and this program. We aren't stupid or naive. We know Joe Paterno has culpability. We know he could have made different choices - he admitted that. We don't think he is God or always perfect or saintly. But he is the greatest college football coach ever, and he is PSU family, and we don't want his exit to be like this. WE ARE...not closing our eyes, ignoring reports, pretending this isn't a wretched occurrence. WE ARE...angry that innocents would be violated under our care. WE ARE...in support of appropriate punishment for every person involved. WE ARE...demanding change to a system that would allow this. WE ARE...not concerned if you do not understand our love and devotion. WE ARE...PENN STATE proud and we will rise again.
YOU ARE DISGUSTING if you are even a TEENY BIT sympathetic to JOE "PA", those savage students or ANYONE who knew about this...
You could have been one of those articulate and SMART students on the news tonight who I saw interviewed who I *believed* that not all students at Penn are "outraged" by the old man's firing.
but no.... you are JUST as bad.
POOR Penn state... I hope this beefs up enrollment in our area... b/c of those stupid students.
good going.
I would be ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGED and embarrassed if my institution covered up such a horrific crime.
I'd be OUTRAGED b/c your degree just lost its value, MrsBLT.
you're right... i'm disgusting and i support child molestation. congrats! you got it all right
i am smart. i am articulate. and for the record, i am outraged.

Re: Did we discuss the Penn State scandal? (includes Grand Jury Report)
aaaaaaaaaaaanyway- back to the issue...
my husband is so heated about this... He's been following this story so closely.
What angers him the most is the MORALS that Penn State is built upon on how MUCH this was covered up...
HOW MANY PEOPLE KNEW...
They say ON AVERAGE, pedophiles violate approx. 107 children...
PEOPLE KNEW!!!!!!
What everyone should be asking is why Mike McQueary is still coaching there...
I honestly believe he will eventually be brought up on charges... as well as Paterno.
Paterno had an AMAZING career... but this is his "Buckner" moment. THIS is what he will be remembered for (from those not college football fans or Penn State grads...)
If only it was a grounder towards first base rolling through the legs.

I never heard the name "Joe Paterno" before this week.
So the dude may be an icon in PA, at Penn State, hey maybe even in the entire universe of SPORTS.
But to millions of people like me who've never heard of him... he's a moron, a sc*mbag, and a goddamned fool.

I hate to say this, because I SYMPATHIZE with outraged students... but this is going to demolish Penn State's reputation if they find out more "higher ups" knew about this and didn't say anything.
Its the truth and I would NOT be calm... I'd be very upset.

Exactly. This quote seems appropriate:
"One man cannot do right in one department of life whilst he is occupied in doing wrong in any other department. Life is one indivisible whole." Mohandas Gandhi

Thanks for posting - I just read all 23 pages. I am DISGUSTED!!!
But one question kept popping in my head: How and why were young boys allowed to be ALONE with this man? In his car? Sleeping over his house? In the locker room? That part still boggles my mind. I would NEVER let DS go ANYWHERE with a man alone. I don't care WHO he is! Why were they allowed? I'm not blaming parents, but I'm just shocked he was given that opportunity on so many occasions!

This is about boys being molested. PERIOD. I really wish people who went or are going would stop making about them. I don't care who attended the school and who still is. I do care that people are almost acting like they are the victims here. The kids that go to the school look like idiots protesting the coaches removal. He helped and turned a blind eye to hurting young boys. I am sure he has done good in his life. At this point, it really doesn't do much good to the 9 boys (so far) that could have had a different life.
Well said!

unfortunately, these were boys with troubled lives - boys with no fathers, parents who worked 3420498234 jobs and were hardly ever home, etc. so i don't think there was much (if any) parental supervision. i think the parents trusted him bc of the foundation. he abused his position and abused those poor boys

He founded a charity for underprivileged children.... Unfortunately these children probably didn't have anyone really caring for them to begin with...

ITA, if I went there or was a grad from there, I'd be outraged that my beloved institute was a farce. And FTR, I NEVER thought of Penn State as a stellar academic school--sports yes, academia? No. Notre Dame has both, Ivy leagues have stellar academia. After this news, they might not even have the sports part anymore. JMO!
