Re: I heard there is going to be protestors today
if they protested when everyone was at home, what would be the point?
the point is to get ATTENTION to the cause.
I cannot stand Al Sharpton, and I think he says whatever he thinks says whatever he needs to say to appeal to whatever crowd he happens to be in front of.
he probably wants people to get arrested so he can file more police brutality reports
but Al Sharpton notwithstanding, this is really akin to people making themselves into a human chain to stop a demolition, people blocking entrances on a picket line, etc.
up to the point where they break the law, they are within their legal right.
a right that people better than us died for.
it SHOULD be exercised whenever there is a perceived injustice.

Re: I heard there is going to be protestors today
Posted by Erica I can imagine the commute home will be aggrevating, but just think of the aggrevation some people had to endure (on both sides) of the Montgomery bus boycott.
I dont think that anything Al has done should EVER have the honor of being compared to something like that- something that was done for the greater good. His only focus is his own bank account. He's an Opportunist NOT a civil rights activist. And i think if MLK,jr was here to see him in action, he'd most likely throw up in his mouth a little bit.

Are you serious with boo effing hoo? that's mature dude...
No one said their purpose was to stop traffic. All she said was she'd like to get home peacefully.
He can protest all he wants.. get a permit and do it in a safe manner. Historically Sharpton hasn't always done both those things....
Why can't he have his LEGAL protest on the great lawn? This way people who don't CHOOSE to be a part of the protest don't have to be. When protests are held in certain areas, a lot of people no longer have a choice whether to be involved or not.. it's inevitable if that's their only way home...
Totally serious. Would she like some cheese with her whine?
"Its CRAP that he is protesting to stop traffic" - there you go, she said it.
So if he had a permit, would you be OK with it then? Even if it meant your commute was an hour longer?
IT IS CRAP!.. He can protest all he wants but why does he need or want to stop traffic? What point does that prove? Did stoping traffic have any part of the Sean Bell case no.. Go Protest outside the courts, the judges chambers, the police pct... Leave the innocent people who have nothing to do with his "RIGHT TO PROTEST ALONE"

what it is is civil disobedience - and while I'm not a fan of sharpton (he's no MLK/Parks or Gandhi/Nehru), I appreciate the historical use of it.
I can imagine the commute home will be aggrevating, but just think of the aggrevation some people had to endure (on both sides) of the Montgomery bus boycott.
Actually if people are laying on the street blocking traffic, this is more or less a derivative of jaywalking.
Pedestrians are required BY LAW to follow all posted street signs, obey traffic walk signs, and use crosswalks to cross streets.
And jaywalking in NYC is illegal. It carries a fine AND a court date. Disrupting traffic is DEFINITELY illegal.
If you want to protest, do it properly and get a permit.
civil disobedience is all about breaking the law non-violently and being prepared to be arrested for it.

ITA. I am not sure how this turned into a racism issue if 2 of the police officers were African American.
Its a horrible situation but protesting is not going to bring back Sean Bell

Does anyone know when this crap is starting?
why is it crap? he has a right to protest. you may not agree with it, but we all have the same rights.
it is very disheartening that the rights that we should all be thankful for are such a nuisance (sp) for some
One can fully support the right of everyone to protest and STILL disagree with a certain protest. The two are not mutually exclusive.

I think I heard they are started around 3pm and they hope to mess up rush hour. Got this from the channel 7 website.
The protests will be held at:
# One Police Plaza, with Sharpton, Nicole Paultre Bell, Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield # Varick and Houston Street, with Hazel Dukes, NAACP and labor leaders # 125th Street and Third Avenue # Third Avenue and 60th Street # 34th Street and Park Avenue # House of Lord Church, 415 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn
All of the locations are near major bridges and streets that are prone to traffic tie-ups even without a demonstration.
"We're trying to tie up the city on a moderate way," Sharpton said. "This is not the shutdown."
Honestly I just don't get it. I was surprised as anyone when the verdict came back on all counts not guilty. But they had a trial, they followed the justice system and they were acquited. It isn't as if they didn't charge them or tried to sweep it under the rug, they lost. Granted I don't think the prosecution proved their case, but again these demenstrations after the trial I think are pointless.

And PS -- on the "right to protest" and "civil disobedience" issues. You have a right to protest peacefully and lawfully. You don't have a right to civil disobedience -- though the theory behind it is that it should be peaceful. If you had a RIGHT to it, you wouldn't get arrested for it.

Because the point of a protest is to bring attention to your point. Protesting during rush hour at major commuting areas gets more attention.

I was wondering the same thing.
What will any of these protests do for the Sean Bell case?
Is it just to bring more attention to the civil suit?

Re: I heard there is going to be protestors today
there was a post the other day about why people don't protest the way the used to anymore.
someone suggested that it may be b/c it doesn't seem to work.
If you PROTEST something by the rules, no one will care.
no one will sit up and say "you know those people that were screaming in that whisper, with the big permit that covered all their signs, sitting waaaayyyyyyy in the middle of central park behind the trees on the grass, you know, that place the city reserved for protests, Yeah, I really get a feel for what this topic does to them, and maybe we should do something to really change it"
the protests would have been poopooed away, and have gone unnoticed if it weren't for the fact that people will be inconvenienced.

sorry you are aggrivated but it is a fundamental right
It's not a fundamental right. It's called breaking the law if you are disrupting traffic.
what it is is civil disobedience - and while I'm not a fan of sharpton (he's no MLK/Parks or Gandhi/Nehru), I appreciate the historical use of it.

Al Sharpton takes away the meaning, the class and the integrity from the Montgomery bus boycott when he organizes protests like this one. He should be ashamed of himself.
It's not about what he's protesting, it's the way in which he's going about it.

That doesn't excuse breaking the law, imo.
And, i'm not saying that i've never broken the law in anyway, but i tend to dismiss someone right away when theyre so blatantly hypocritical about it. Almost inevitabley, there will be violence. How does that prove ANY point. How does putting yourself in a position to be arrested, and then crying out about how you were targeted prove anything? And HOW does protesting a shooting and trying to turn it into a race issue when there were black cops shooting as well support your cause AT ALL?
I believe in the right to protest. Legally. And, with purpose. This protest i do not believe falls into that category whatsoever.

I doubt he would be granted a permit for the places he plans on gathering - so it's a moot point.
Why should he bother w/ a permit, rules don't apply to him.
His intentions are nothing less than self-gratuitous as always.

"Inconvienceing" people who do not CHOOSE to be part of a protest sometimes sways said protest in another direction...
Everyone is entitled to their opinions, everyone is entitled to voice those opinions, no one is entitled to cause me harm...
Unfortunately, unlawful protests aren't always the safest venues. If I do not CHOOSE to join his "rally", I'd hope I can avoid it without having to alter my commute. With him centering his protests around highly trafficed areas, I loose that right.

I agree with this. Sharpoton's goal is to "shut down the city".
Tonight is a Jewish/Israeli holiday- Its Yom Ha'atmaout- Israeli Indepdence day. Now unlike the 4th of July, this is a HUGE holiday to this 60 year old nation whose sons and daughters (including my DH) have to serve in the military just to protect its right to exist. Now, my DH will most likely not get to celebrate with his daughter because of this.
And again, this is just showing me what a hard job the police have. Sharpton expects to get arrested, which leads me to beleive his plan does not involve peaceful civil disobedience.
