Actually MANY banks will not take double endorsed checks anymore. Of course, only if both people are on the account (which is not the senario I believe the OP is referring to).

TD Bank won't let us do that anymore.

Some will, but you must have id of the original person that it is written to.
AKA:
Abraham has a check that is made payable to him. Abraham signs it and gives it to Carol. Carol signs it and takes it to the bank to deposit. The bank will most likely ask Carol for a copy of Abraham's ID to verify the signature (that Abraham ACTUALLY signed it).
Hope that wasn't too confusing! LOL

Any bank that refuses to do this is failing to comply with UCC laws. I would go nuts too because the banks can't just freely make their own rules. They are regulated and must comply with UCC rules of endorsement.

Can you deposit a check in someone else's name in your account
I use BOA for 5 years now....every week I deposit checks with other names on them....actually i dont think I've ever deposited a check that had the same name as the account holder on it.
NEVER have had a problem but I also don't deal with tellers I do strictly mobile or atm banking.

Re: Can you deposit a check in someone else's name in your account
Depends on the bank. i just did this with a check made out to DH and the teller asked a senior BO if it was okay and because she knows both DH and I she said okay so I wouldn't say yes across the board...depends on the bank and circumstances.

Yes all banks do. Don't sign it. On the back write for deposit only and the account number and you'll be fine. I just deposited 25 checks like this with no problems

TD bank does not, nor does my credit union. I think it's completely dependent upon the bank.

Actually, by writing for deposit only, it can only be deposited into the account of the payee.

Agreed. I was a manager at Chase & you can only write for deposit only if it is going into an account that the check is made payable to. Whoever helped you does not know their job or care.
To the op. Most banks do accept 3rd party checks as long as the person who the check was written to signs first & then you sign underneath their signature.

Really? TD lets me do it. Maybe because I have a business account?

Maybe it's different with children then, or even branch specific, teller specific or dollar amount specific.
In my experience, I've been to a couple of different TD branches over the years, and they would not allow double endorsed checks if the other person wasn't on the bank account. They said the person had to be added to the account before they would deposit it. These were government issued tax checks, not personal checks, so it wasn't like there was a question if the funds would clear.

Re: Can you deposit a check in someone else's name in your account
Many banks won't allow it because of fraud.
Unless the other person is standing there with you.
I was a teller manager in college- If the check is small and you have been a good customer for a long period of time an exception can be made. But typically it's not happening.
Especially with govt checks- I don't think double endorsements are allowed on those. Even though the funds are good- the gov can send it back to the bank for bad endorsement
And minors are a different story. Obviously their parent can sign for them since their sig means nothing anyway.
