WHY is it that when Tim Tebow exercised his religious freedom rights and took a knee that no one made such a big deal? White religious conservative does it, "yes he's exercisiing his frst amendment rights". Black dude with a fro does it? "Disrespectful, unpatriotic, anti-American, etc. etc. etc" Give me a break. This is glaringly obvious racism
See this is what I’m saying
I’m not in favor of anyone kneeling for the anthem of the country they live in
That doesn’t mean I do t think we don’t have problems. Issues etc
And they are totally different things. And Tebow did and always has gotten flack for it

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how this ad says that him "sacrificing" his career is even remotely comparable to a soldier's sacrifice. I don't see what one has to do with the other. How has this ad turned into a comparison of sacrifice?
I think it's the wording of the ad that implies it. He sacrificed his career, not "everything". I think the ad campaign could have been executed better and Nike certainly seems hypocritical choosing such a platform (given the conditions of their factories). I don't have any strong feelings about the topic though. Not enough to burn anything I own or to go out and deliberately buy more.

Thanks for answering my question.. I was not a heavy football fan but I remember a lot of talk and him getting sh!t for his strong religious beliefs.

Because after 9/11, Pat Tillman literally sacrificed everything, giving up a thriving NFL career to enlist in the military and eventually losing his life.
Because they are both football players, people are going to automatically compare the two "sacrifices" to stand up for what they believed in.

I think people are hung up on the semantics of the word "sacrifice."
If you have any sense of social justice at all, you'll understand the importance of Kapernick's choices. If you reduce him to nothing more than some "dumb mouthpiece" then you're truly missing the point and probably your racist microagressions are showing.
White people will never, ever understand the plight of people of color and the abuse they face in our society in 2018. Every time a person of color attempts to bring awareness to said plight, white people lose their shitt.

I mean just because you're black doesn't mean you can't be racist. I'm not calling you racist. I'm just saying the two aren't mutually exclusive.
I have yet to see why you think he's dumb. You just seem to resent him for being a millionaire and using that platform to bring awareness to a cause.

I posted several points. .
- he didn’t bring this crazy awareness., he jumped on the bandwagon of what already had been heated debate for years. -this whole Nike thing and Kapernick is about money now. People need a reality check if they don’t see it - I mentioned his millions because I think you should respect the flag and think it’s hypocritical that he was talking all this crap about our country and the NFL while still collecting his paycheck. Yes there needs to be a change but I still believe what he did was disrespectful. -did I lose sleep over it,no. Did I think he got a lot more credit than he deserved yes. Do I care that he is on a Nike add - heck no. -do I think he ruined his career on his own fruition and it wasn’t a sacrifice - yes.
ETA: because I realize you aren’t the one that made the comment. I know anyone can be racists but I think it’s a unfair assumption to say anyone who thinks this man is dumb or doesn’t agree is racists.
I am also going to admit I thought he was dumb before this whole thing.

But that’s the thing, it’s not only white people and the comment is basically saying anyone who disagrees with him is racists or is showing racial tendencies. I have a right and anyone to believe in respecting the flag while agreeing this country needs change and is f#cked up. Doesn’t make someone racists.
Yes I’m sure racists people came out but it’s not the entire group.

Of course. I'm sure he would totally support standing up for what you believe is right. I was just explaining why people are drawing comparison to a soldiers sacrifice. If you don't follow football, you probably wouldn't know Pat Tillman's story.

Ok, I just think it’s sad that our country is black vs white. Not specifically pointed at you. It’s just there is no in the middle, everyone gets lumped together. I see why this is happening but it doesn’t seem to be getting better.
It just sad because I have a mix in my family including my son. It makes the world a scary place for him.

Its not about the protest (at least for me), its about him disrespecting the entire country and all of the people who have sacrificed for it. He didn't need to do it in that way, I'm all for effective protest, but this was beyond that.
I don't currently have any Nike products, but I certainly wouldn't destroy my own stuff because of this schm*ck.
Have you read about how he came to the decision to kneel? He did so after discussions with U.S. Army veteran Nate Boyer, who convinced him that kneeling would be a respectful way to peacefully protest, and when he started to respectfully kneel, then other players started to join in.
Here is the Snopes article explaining it Article
An excerpt from the article:
Kaepernick’s then-teammate Eric Reid joined him in kneeling for the protest prior to that game. He recalled the experience in an op-ed published by The New York Times on 25 September 2017: After hours of careful consideration, and even a visit from Nate Boyer, a retired Green Beret and former NFL player, we came to the conclusion that we should kneel, rather than sit, the next day during the anthem as a peaceful protest. We chose to kneel because it’s a respectful gesture. I remember thinking our posture was like a flag flown at half-mast to mark a tragedy.
So while you perceive it as disrespect, he's actually put effort into trying to be respectful and still get his point across.
I also love how people complain about Kaepernick not being respectful of the people who sacrificed for our country, while Trump may actually be destroying the VA and our country. Maybe people should be as worried about the policies in this country as whether football players stand or kneel. (This is general statement not specifically directed at quoted poster)

I’m ok with the protest. But that asshole deserves nothing after displaying pigs in cop uniforms on his socks, so no, he’s not respectful to anything or anyone. I’d fully back someone like Malcom Jenkins doing a Nike ad about protesting because that man is an amazing role model and puts his money and time his where his mouth is. But I’m also an eagles fan, so I’m sure there’s tons of other guys from other teams who I would have supported as well, but Kaepnick is a disgrace.

I really don't see the connection between the kneeling and the sacrifices of the military. My conservative relatives try to help me understand to no avail. Why can't the guy just kneel in protest and be himself? I know why he is kneeling, I see his point, and there are no fires. I personally wouldn't kneel but why can I be open minded and just say, "you do you" and walk away.

This is so stupid. Don’t people have better things to do with their time? There are a lot more serious issues going on, and people are burning their Nikes?
It also never bothered me that he didn’t stand for the anthem. I am in the firm camp that just because you do not stand for the anthem or Pledge doesn’t make you someone who doesn’t love their country. Standing is an action not a feeling. And I know that he was protesting.
I never stand or recite the Pledge. It doesn’t make me love the US any less. I do not like the idea of a pledge to a country. I haven’t experienced the anthem in YEARS, so I have no idea what I would do now. IMO, nationalism is not a good thing.
But burning your shoes? Syria is in a major war. People are dying. The Middle East is a total mess. Refugees are suffering (I have a new refugee friend, so I’m sorry if I’m a bit soapboxish here. The stories I hear from him are just awful).
So I guess go ahead and burn your shoes and remain in a state of ignorance.

How do things ever get better if we keep lumping everyone together. Things are never going to get any better if anyone just takes a group of people and lumps them together.

I understand what you mean, but in truth, reverse racism does not exist. There is no evidence to support it. I’m not going to get into a debate, but I suggest doing a bit of reading on the topic of reverse racism.

So all the black including myself who think he is dumb is racists?
Never did I say that - my post is directed towards how some white people lose their minds when black people stand up for themselves.
I will walk back my statement because I will never speak or presume to speak on behalf of people of color - I only intended to comment in regards to white people.
so now we also can tell that YOU are a racist. Lumping together all white people, really - isn't that racism as well. Why is that OK? How do things ever get better if we keep lumping everyone together. Things are never going to get any better if anyone just takes a group of people and lumps them together.
I understand what you mean, but in truth, reverse racism does not exist. There is no evidence to support it. I’m not going to get into a debate, but I suggest doing a bit of reading on the topic of reverse racism.
There is no such thing as reverse racism. Racism is racism no matter what race you are targeting. Let’s not start that.
