From what I have been able to find planned parenthood doesn't offer mammograms.

2. I don't feel that there is a war on women, and I don't have a feminist bone in my body.

Now see, I don't get this. What do you think a feminist is?

Do you believe in equal pay for equal work?
Do you think women should be given access to the same opportunities as men? The same health care?
The same voting rights?

If you said yes to these questions then congrats! You're a feminist!!

They don't. They will refer the patient to another facility that does perform mammograms. What they will do is perform manual breast exams.

I think maybe (and I could be totally wrong) it's a matter of interpretation of the word "advocacy" - while I may believe in the aforementioned things, I may not go out of my way or devote my time to making sure these things come to fruition or are protected. Someone who DOES take the time and devote their energy ("advocates")to the "causes" - that, to me, is a feminist.

Another definition - the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes

Can I just say how heated I am that my DH has made comments on how he'd vote for Romney (with no explanation other than *all politicians are evil*) but will argue for an HOUR on the phone on whether or not A-Rod should be benched...

Then again since no one checks the facts after the debate that will just go unnoticed.

I honestly didnt look into it until this thread said something about it.

Re: I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

Aha, this explains better what I was trying to say.

"The suffix -ist indicates a person involved in the activity or field (e.g. scientist works in science)."

So the definitions you guys posted are of the word "feminism" - the noun. The core beliefs/values. When you add the -ist to it, you're indicating that person is involved in furthering/supporting the beliefs.

Does that make more sense? I am not very articulate at the moment, lol.

I think the word feminism is misused.. like "anti social."

sorry i am at work and can not elaborate like I would like to...

I just wish that the social issues... abortions, planned parenthood and gay marriage was not up for conversation bc its 2012 and we should all be able to love who ever we want and get married, we all should have the option to get birth control , go to planned parenthood. I just wish these were not issues that we had to vote on since to me they all seem like 100 percent common sense seperation of church and state.

got it... and i agree.

Chat Icon Why do things always have to get snarky? I clearly know myself better than either of you do, and I'm capable of defining myself and my beliefs. You can disagree with me...that is certainly fine. I'm just not sure why you are permitted to define me.

As I stated, I don't believe there is a war on women. I'm not sure what voting rights have to do with anything; we have the right to vote. Yes, I believe in equal rights; however, I have yet to see solid, hard proof that women do not have equal opportunities solely due to the fact that they are women, that women are paid less solely due to the fact that they are women, etc.

The way that it's always been verbally presented to me is that a man in X position makes A amount and a woman with the exact same qualifications in X position makes A minus 10 amount, but that's the type of statistic that I've never seen. I get what the chart you're showing says, but it doesn't necessarily imply that the only reason(s) for that difference in earnings is gender. I understand how people could deduce that, but I also see how people would say that it's not the sole factor if a factor at all; I'm in the latter group.

I'm really genuinely interested - what other factors would you attribute it to? I don't know what else there is. The explanation of this chart and these statistics clarify that these are comparisons between workers in the same positions, same qualifications, working the same hours. So with all that being accounted for what factors are there other than gender?

Planned Parenthood does not perform mammograms in their clinics but they will refer a woman to a clinic that does if a lump is found. So yes, they do help women find resources in regards to breast health.

This baffles the crap out of me. All I can say is this.... And I am going to preface this by saying I can ONLY go by the friends on FB who are "liking" Romney and Ryan. They all seem to be stay at home moms who are living in wealthy situations. I am not saying this is the case everywhere, or here, or inviting 800 women to now jump down my throat. I am merely saying the ones I personally see liking them on FB, which I would assume mean they plan to vote for them, all live in this situation. And that tells me something.

For some reason, the quote is turning up really weirdly on my computer...anyway...this is where my text begins.

I'm really hoping not to start a debate on this thread, but I want to answer your questions b/c I completely respect your opinion. Ultimately, I was trying to just answer the OP's question, so I'm hoping I don't ruin her original intent.

I'm exhausted, so maybe I'm not reading this correctly...but this chart is saying overall women's to men's earnings right? It isn't breaking it down by industry right? Men and women could be working in different industries.

Additionally, the gap is smaller for younger workers. Women older than this group taking on different types of positions to spend more time at home with their children could affect their salaries.

That last point could be a point of contention though, judging on some responses I've heard about Mitt's statement regarding flexible hours for working mothers. I don't think it's a bad thing though...I know many, many women my own age who WANT that. We want that flexibility when we have children; we want to be at home with our kids and hope that we can. I don't think there is a thing wrong with a male employer being flexible with a woman's schedule so she can be with children if she chooses.

Ultimately, I don't like that I'm made to feel badly about my opinion (not from you..just in general) or that I'm told what I am and what I believe. I really do try to look at all angles to a situation, and I have. These are my views, and this is what I believe. I think it's great when people can have civil conversations about politics, and I think it's sad when people become nasty (that's not about you lol).

Anyway...I'm off to bed, so if I stop responding to this, I'm not ignoring you--just sleeping!

To answer the original question, I don't feel there is a 'war on women'. The economy is my priority because I feel more empowered as a person and as a woman when my investments are growing, assets appreciating and job is secure. Previous posts mentioned women as second class citizens, I don't feel that way at all. I think my pay is equal to my male peers, I personally don't think i have ever been passed over for a promotion/project due to my gender, I believe that my career and compensation is something that I have significant control over.

I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

I lean more republican, especially on the federal level, because I believe that the republican party can do a better job at protecting our country and us as individuals. There are so many groups who are out to get us (the USA and the values we were founded on) in this world who want nothing more then for us to lose every right we have ( especially women's rights). I feel we need to do everything we can to preserve the right to have discussions like the one we are having now. We need to show these groups this will not be tolerated in the least bit.
