For those of you who think Romney won't work to overturn Roe v. Wade, check out his own site:

http://www.mittromney.com/issues/values

Federal judges are in for LIFE. So, if he appoints enough anti choice judges, we could see Roe v. Wade overturned WAY after he serves 4 or 8 years and it would still be because of him.

With all due resepct, it is WAY more complicated than the appointment of pro-life justices. Also, I am pretty sure that Supreme Court justices have to be approved and are not just unilaterally appointed, no?

If you have a very conservative senate they will appoint whom ever he nominates. It is quite rare for a nominee to not be appointed. 151 people have been nominated. Only 29 were not approved.

Sure, it's more complicated, but that's step one and the pieces are very much in place.

I'm sure the lawyers are more than ready for a friendly court to defend state laws that are ALREADY on the books but are overriden by federal law.

Yes, the Senate has to approve justices. It ranges anywhere from a formality to a grilling (think Sonia Sotomayor) but the latter is rare. Senate rejections of nominees are NOT common. (Of course, that depends on the makeup of the Senate.)

That's fair. And I understand why people would be concerned. I personally am not.

Re: I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

you know what I really find concerning- and this is my true problem with it. it's not that they want to OT R v W per se. it's not that they don't believe in covering contraception...none of that.

it's where it comes from. the connection to their religious beliefs and how wholly unconstitutional that is. and how it is so blatant and worse, so accepted.

I cannot bring myself to vote for someone who will so easily and openly and even proudly say they will go against on of the fundamental laws and founding beliefs of this country-the separation between church and state.

Yep yep. Not to mention limiting access to Planned Parenthood and putting thousands of women's lives in danger because they can't get mammograms or pap smears.

I'm more concerned about this than overturning Roe v Wade (although it is still a concern as well).

I think you may have misinterpreted....I don't want to put words in anyone's mouth but my point (that I believe the other poster was agreeing with) was that it should NOT only be about the economy, gas prices and unemployment - it SHOULD also be about social issues.

I have had this discussion with a number of people and the answer is generally that its not their priority, that they think other issues are more important, and that the worst thing that will happen is Romney appointing SCOTUS justices who try to overturn R v W but that they dont think it will happen.

I guess for me I just don't want to give Romney, or anyone else for that matter, even half the chance to repeal Roe v. Wade, that would be enough for me if I were a Republican female to change my vote to someone else.

What would happen, if G*d forbid, it was actually repealed? What would they be saying then?

The other thing to worry about is isn't a SCOTUS appt for life?! A whole damn slew of people wanting to repeal RVW and YEARS to do it! I shudder at what that would do to women's rights

For those whose #1 priority is the economy, I have a question.

Which of Romney's policies on taxes, jobs, the economy are so great? Honestly. I'd like to hear specifics if possible. What I don't want to hear is "Well, Obama didn't do this or that". This is about ROMNEY's plan, his ideas. Not Obama.

Thanks!

we need specifics from BOTH. If Obama doesn't make changes, we are f*&cked. I am not thrilled with either on economic issues.

But that wasn't my question. I hear or read all the time - the economy sucks and it's Obama's fault so I'm voting for Romney. Well what is so great about Romney's plan that would make you want to vote for him except for the fact that "he's not Obama"?

Here's what I read that summarizes the key points for me. What Obama did wrong and what Romeny's plan is.

for me, im more concerned with other issues. when i ask myself am i any better than i was 4 years ago....NO WAY! my husbands salaray was cut due to obama interfering with his industry, im still unemployed, my health ins. has skyrocketed, my house is worth so much less than what i paid for it, gas and other prices are ridiculous.

I can not take another 4 years of obama. I can look past romney's views on women bc i need to worry about my FAMILY and our financial future.

i dont like either candidate, but 4 more years of the same thing just doesnt sit well with me.

Thanks for your response. I can appreciate that you have other concerns that are factors in your decision. I also think that this is such a thoroughly feminine way of thinking, to sacrifice something for the greater good of your family.

I see what is being said here. However, for me personally, even if I was a parent (and as a wife), I would want my vote to go to someone who would work to uphold my rights as a woman, which are also the rights of my future daughters, granddaughters, nieces, etc. If I can't know that I will be able to receive the healthcare I need that is so vital to my existence, the other things don't matter much. I think women's rights impact ALL the other issues - employment (equal pay, maternity leave policies, etc.) taxes (health care, again with equal pay) obviously healthcare as its own issue as well. While I respect that there are other concerns, for me they are all so closely intertwined that nothing can be prioritized over my rights as a woman.

sorry i am at work and can not elaborate like I would like to...

I just wish that the social issues... abortions, planned parenthood and gay marriage was not up for conversation bc its 2012 and we should all be able to love who ever we want and get married, we all should have the option to get birth control , go to planned parenthood. I just wish these were not issues that we had to vote on since to me they all seem like 100 percent common sense seperation of church and state.

Re: I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

I'm an undecided voter, but I'm leaning toward Romney. My reasons are thus:

1. The economy is the biggest issue to me right now.

2. I don't feel that there is a war on women, and I don't have a feminist bone in my body.

3. I think that SOME of what Romney says gets blown out of proportion. I think that this binder business is getting out of hand.
