I know I'm oversimplifying, but is it really the government's responsibility to create private sector jobs? How do they do that exactly? The government can create favorable conditions for employers, but those who run companies want the most bang for their buck, so hello China.

Even if you think about some of the discussions on here (the union rat thread, almost every thread about teachers) it just seems like there is a big lack of interest in paying people a living wage.

Yes, the government doesn't create jobs, they either hinder the private sector (or set them free).

I guess the Republicans could start by at least voting for fair pay for women. I realize neither Romney nor Obama are superheroes, but how can virtually an entire party, some of the representatives being women (including Michelle Bachman) vote against this?

I try to stay away from politics on this site but I wanted to point out that this bill is not exactly about equal pay for women. We already have the Equal Pay Act. What this bill did was just extend the time in which people could bring lawsuits against employers. Critics felt this law was redundant and just created more business for employment lawyers. In addition, because pay discrimination is so difficult to prove, this legislation is just symbolic - fluff. In fact, since the bill was signed the wage gap has widened yet the complaints filed with the EEOC have dropped.

While the government doesn't directly create private sector jobs, job creation (or shrinkage) under their administration is credited to them as result of their economic policies.

I'll be honest.. I think anyone who wants the job of president has to be a little egotistical, a lot altruistic or just plain crazy!Chat Icon

For those concerned about job creation:

Here is an interesting graphic. Obama's tenure in office has created more jobs in a bad economy then George W. Bush did in a better one during his second term. Thoughts??

Job creation

I am not involving myself in a Romney v. Obama debate because I truly don't believe either one is anywhere close to the ideal I've thought about.. but Santa Claus isn't running..

That said, I'd really like to see more data on this. I want to know what KINDS of jobs were created under the last 10 presidents - meaning is the job creation across the board including all levels of government and private sector professions? Are we only seeing new jobs for the best educated - or conversely only low paying jobs for those who just need any amount of money at this point? Has there been stimulus in hiring in a variety of industries from manufacturing to retail to finance - and job grades?

I am curious to see how that kind of data shakes out..

It's interesting stuff. Let me do a bit of research to see if I can find concrete reliable info. Good question and one I've thought about myselfChat Icon

I read the book Game Change and someone (and I do think it was Obama) who said something like, "Whoever wants this job has to be borderline mentally ill." I think I agree. Chat Icon

I am still undecided and one of the biggest reason is that I work in healthcare. I have some serious concerns about my personal livelihood with the implementation of Obamacare. Im sure there are other women in a similar situation where they need to reconcile in their own mind, not necessarily to someone else, how to choose between their livelihood and opinions on the economy and their equally strong social views. I am very pro-choice... I am 100% supportive of gay marriage, but i need to pay my mortgage. It is an incredibly difficult decision to have to prioritize and not one I'm happy about being forced to make.

I think the jobs, economy, federal budget & foreign policy is more important than abortion (JMO) so I'll vote based on those platforms. I really don't think the 'war on women' is really what it is claiming to be, but instead more of a ploy to sway women voters to focus on just certain issues.

This is how I feel exactly! Chat Icon

Me three.

And its not that I don't believe in gay rights-I do, or funding planned parenthood or a womans right to choose-I do...but the other issues are just more important to me.

I am either voting for Mitt or Gary Johnson. I fear 4 more years under Obama and I am terrified of ObamaCare.

Chat Icon Chat Icon you are correct. It was an amendment to something that has been in place for...what is it...48 years? yet I keep hearing it be touted as something Obama is responsible for and it's not.

Re: I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

to answer the OP's question.

Even if Romney could get the support to overturn Roe V. Wade which I think is highly unlikely...he's calling for it to then be turned to state hands. States will have a hell of a time trying to ban abortion...it would be absolute chaos with protests and anarchy if they even tried. I'm sure they are aware of this. I think Romney is suddenly saying this because he has a strong support from the mormon and christian communities by taking this stance...but to go through with what he says would be an awfully tall task and I think he knows that better than anyone. I'm not saying I agree with misleading people to get the support of the religious community. I think he needs to put his beliefs aside and realize that as americans we are entitled to difference of beliefs and religion etc. HOWEVER, for me...Abortion is not an option. It's not something I would consider, it's not something I agree with. I do believe life starts at conception. I do however wish Romney would keep legislation far away from a women's uterus as it has no place there. Everyone is entitled to do with their bodies as they please and just because I don't agree with abortion doesn't give me a right to intervene in someone elses life. I think Romney should strictly focus on more education, more outreach, more awareness efforts to cut down on the amount of abortions. instead of trying to slap legislation on it. BUT, because it doesn't apply to me and abortion is not an option for me...I am more concerned with other issues that affect me directly right now such as the economy.

Re: I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

I asked one of my colleagues (a HUGE Romney supporter) how she reconciles Romney's apparent view on women with her vote.

She is an Israeli by birth (although she is also a US citizen) and said she used to ask the same thing about Jewish people who backed Obama, but as other have said, she recognizes that it comes down to priority of interest.

THIS really bugs me (not you, the comment from your coworker). I am a Jew and a Zionist and a liberal and it drives ME crazy when American Jews vote Republican ONLY (or mainly) because of Israel.

IMO equating the two issues (women and Israel) is impossible because they are so very different. Further, America is allied with Israel. This will not change and neither political party is seeking to change it. These issues are so different that the comparison is moot. I suppose it could just be recognized as priority but I simply think the two issues are incomparable.

Thank you! I have tried to research this in the past, but come up against so much partisan bullcrap that i get really frustrated. It's like "EVERY DEMOCRAT EVER ONLY CREATES GOVERNMENT JOBS PAID OUT OF TAXPAYER POCKETS TO SUPPORT PROGRAMS FOR LAZY PEOPLE WHO LIVE OFF THE TAX PAYER DOLLAR" or "EVERY REPUBLICAN EVER CREATES MORE CORPORATE OPPORTUNITY FOR STINGY, RICH WHITE MEN WHO HIRE HOT SECRETARIES AND OUTSOURCE THE REAL JOBS TO CHINA"

It's so depressing.

It's not a secret, you can find the numbers, broken down by industry and even part time vs full time, in the Bureau of Labor Statistics monthly Employment Situation reports. They even issue statistical highlights reports each month so you don't have to look at the really data heavy report.

It's because people don't look to source materials anymore. They just blindly believe everything that their respective politicians and/or their media of choice tell them.

I did look on the gov site, but I guess I didn't look hard enough. I'm not looking for monthly breakdown.. I'm more looking to find by president rather than monthly by date. I will go look again and see if they have the breakdown by year or presidential term!

THank you!

I didn't read most of the replies (sorry if this has been stated).

I was the flip side in 2008. My entire life, raised by a hard core feminist, I have always thought that I would vote for a woman no matter what. Sarah Palin changed all of that for me.

I do think dislike for one candidate IS a decent reason to vote for the other.

I have to respectfully disagree to an extent. If a person dislikes a candidate and is INFORMED on the other candidate and their platform, plans, policies, etc. then yes. However, I can't even tell you how many people I've heard say "Obama sucks so I'm voting for Romney." Ok, which of his plans, policies, etc. do you like about Romney? "He's not Obama." To me, that's not right. That is a legit conversation I had with someone.

Sorry but that study was paid for by Romney,

here is a link with arguments as to why it is wrong.

The fact is most economists have stated that Romney's 5 pt plan would hurt the middle class, of course they could be wrong but we do not know since Romney nor Ryan want to give specifics.

Also that the math just does not work.

sorry forgot the link
