Re: WBLI Suspends Randy
I hate that station period.
I never listen to it........but looking at Randy's picture.....he looks like a sc*mbag....that deserved what he got.
ETA: He can have his opinion and think or say what he wants about any town.........(from what I read in the article) when the caller from that specific town called in.....he automatically told the calller she must live in a trailer park or assumed so. From the caller's defense, I would find that highly offensive.

Honestly, He's a radio tv personality...it's par for the course. It's expected that they say outrageous things. That is what they get paid for. Not really a big deal.
ALthough, i do think he was asked to apologize and did not, he should be suspended.
I agree except I don't think he should be forced to apologize if he feels he did nothing wrong.
He has every right to think and say what he wants as it's his freedom of speech. If people don't like it, they should stop listening.
This is just a form of censorship that has become more commonplace and that makes me nervous.
yes, he has freedom of speech. but when you're using someone else's airwaves, you are also subject to their rules. and if BLI has rules to not trash an entire town, he should stick to them or get his own radio station where he can say whatever he wants

lets be real here--long island is a diverse area and there's no denying that certain areas have a "stigma" attached to them....be it good or bad. sometimes i think when you live in these areas you just have to take the good with the bad and let the stigma roll off your back.
I agree. I used to live in Bellport and not the good part. My parents still live there. I hear the worst things about that area all the time. I could care less about the jokes or the snarky comments. I know my parents and the friends that are still living in that area are great, hardworking people. No comment or joke would make me think any less. It's true that you have to take the bad with the good.
I have one aunt who refuses to visit my mom at night because she says that her car will be broken into. We laugh at it all the time.

True, this is something that should be handled by the management in house. It shouldn't be covered by News 12 or Newsday nor should public officals be getting involved because that is when it becomes censorship.

Re: WBLI Suspends Randy
I listen to BLI for about 12 minutes a day in the morning on my way to the train. Yesterday I happened to hear the drama as it was unfolding. I always took Randy to be "for show." I honestly dont think his comments were so over the top that he should be fired. I believe in the principle of freedom of speech.

I have no clue who this radio DJ is... but these are just words. If people don't like, turn the station off.
I don't understand how people can take something stupid that a stranger said, to heart.
They're generalizations, sometimes they're true... sometimes they're not.
It gets dangerous when we start censoring EVERYTHING for fear of offending. He didn't say anything HATEFUL. It's not like he said 'hey lets go into Mastic and kill everyone'
I agree. This country is going to He!! partially because of censorship IMO

I didn't say that he SHOULD apologize - i am saying that he wouldn't - really now it makes no difference.
Just lilke Randy is entitled to his opinion - so AM I. I made my opinion known - i think he is despicable and without merit - he has nothing to back up his opinion as it was stated that he has never even been to mastic/shirley.
I don't care if he apologizes or not - it makes no difference to me.
maybe my issue is when i hear everyone throwing the "i'm offended & hurt" stuff around. it just seems a bit dramatic to throw that terminology around about a guy that probably most people who are claiming to be offended didn't even hear him say it in the first place and probably only found out about it thru news stories and such. (not specifying you--just in general)
lets be real here--long island is a diverse area and there's no denying that certain areas have a "stigma" attached to them....be it good or bad. sometimes i think when you live in these areas you just have to take the good with the bad and let the stigma roll off your back.
See I think the whole stigma of an area is not even relevant. Who gives a flying fluck what this azz thinks of Mastic or Deer Park or Brentwood. Bottom line, it is a Constitutional right to speak freely. This is why the KKK can put on their sheets and spread their brand of poison around. Do I like it...he!! no! But I wouldn't stomp on their right to speak it.

You're absolutely right. Thats why I like listening to Howard Stern on Sirius. He is a complete jerk and says many insulting and hurtful things about people, BUT, at the end of the day, this is life...people are always going to say things that are hurtful and insulting, etc. I feel that TV and radio personalities should watch what they say on public airwaves, and for those that are very open and expressive (i.e. Howard Stern, Don Imus etc) should go on private airwaves and say what the heck they want. But I am seeing that little by little our 1st amendment is SLOWLY but surely being taken away from us.

Freedom of speech is the right to speak freely without government interference. Private employers can fire or discipline someone for making offensive comments.

Thats fine. It is just a little scary that people can be so "offended" about a comment being made about their town that they are willing to overlook this. And who's to say it is not-maybe BLI is worried about the FCC-that is what happened to Howard Stern.

This whole thing is ridiculous. If jokes about people, areas, etc were censored, we'd have very little comedy. I'm a blonde. Should I be offended and try to have fired everyone who makes a joke about blondes being dumb or loose? No. Do I take it to heart? No, I laugh at it. Maybe he should have apologized for offending anyone, but I think suspending him is a little extreme.
Totally! I mean people really need to get a sense of humor. Also who gives a FLUCK about what some DJ has to say anyway. People need to chill...........

I couldn't agree with this more. Just like Don Imus shouldn't have been fired for what he said, Randy should not be fired either. People chose to listen to the station, that is what our freedom is all about. If enough people didn't like him, their rating would drop and they would let him go because he wasn't doing his job. That's the ONLY reason he should be fired.
I AGREE - I just cant stand him. He is just so annoying and whiny

Re: WBLI Suspends Randy
I think he should be fired but only because I can't stand him and stopped listening to that station in the morning because I found his so annoying. I personally don't have a problem with what he said and I don't think he was offensive. I also don't have a problem with him not wanting to apologize. Part of being a radio personality is to make comments like that. Yes people are going to get offended but there were probably more people that laughed then those that got offended.
I think he's an arse any way and I hope they replace him at some point. But I don't think it should be because of this.

Re: WBLI Suspends Randy
i didnt hear the actual words. i just heard about it and then read about it here. at first, i was a bit upset cause i felt it was inappropriate. but thinking about it, comedians crack jokes ALL THE TIME about race, religion, money, sex, social status, etc, etc, etc. i think everyone needs to stop being so serious and put things into perspective here...and when i say people i dont mean specific people on the boards (not stirring the pot), i mean the general public. i mean, its not like he cursed at her and called her a racial slur. he cracked a joke.

Re: WBLI Suspends Randy
people in real life say stereotypical things all day long.. so why do people pretend to be offended ? if you find yourself offended look inside and ask why.... so mastic's mostly an s***hole... i dont care i still hung/hang out there for 10 years every day and still go there.. i have family there.. i didnt mind it and still don't.. and im a "sayville" girl from "the really good side of the tracks".. and we were stereotyped as "rich" girls/ "valley" girls, "sl&tty" girls etc... who the heck cares? you know what you and your family/friends really are so who cares what strangers say..... and yah everyone i knew from there knew it isn't the greatest area too; its not a surprise.. so who cares if someone says it on a radio?
not one of us here (or anywhere) is perfect.. you (and me) are always stereotyping be it positive or negative .. and all speech (cept for the whole fire in a movie theater type stuff) is protected by the first amendment and its being eroded very fast... thats why people need to get involved in people against censorship and other organizations like it... to protect our 1st amendment (and im assuming that our founding fathers made it the first one for a reason)
and im sure ill get flamed but theres so much bs out there in the media lately about people getting censored and fired for bs reasons...i had to finally let it out
now lets toughen up people and enjoy life again

Re: WBLI Suspends Randy
Just to remind everyone of what a joke is, and how it's not meant to offend anyone, take a look at one of our very own threads:
http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic.aspx?ID=177876
And just to quote one specific piece related to this very subject:
Mastic/Shirley Barbie:This Modern Day Retro-Barbie comes with Two Teeth, Acid Washed Jeans, Leg Warmers, White Reeboks, Feathered Hair and a Double Ring Belt (Yes it is 2007). She also comes with Ken, her brother/boyfriend, complete with house arrest bracelet and Dodge Neon. Parole Officer Sold Separately.
The same type of comments weren't offensive in this context, so why is it any different coming from a radio personality who is paid to make people laugh and keep ratings high? Now can we all laugh at ourselves?

Re: WBLI Suspends Randy
I think this whole issue is hysterical, IMO, every town has it's sterotypes, just like north shore vs. south shore. Some of the sterotypes are right and some are wrong, who cares, if you truly think the statements are wrong then just laugh at the DJ at being ignorant about your town
