WBLI Suspends Randy
WBLI morning show co-host suspended for comment

A radio DJ for a top-rated local morning show was suspended Thursday after refusing to apologize for making nasty comments about Mastic residents on the air, the program's host said.
On Wednesday, Randy, a co-host on "BLI in the Morning" on WBLI, asked a caller from Mastic: "Did your pipes freeze under the trailer, or do you have that stuff down there to keep them warm?"
The caller, who was entering a contest, said she lived in a house and was "very angry" with him, to which Randy replied: "Just think, if you win this game, the whole trailer park will be excited."
Station managers asked Randy to apologize on Thursday's show, but he never did, co-host Dana DiDonato said.
"Genuinely in his mind, he doesn't believe he did anything wrong," she said.
Randy did not return an e-mail message Thursday. Station manager John Shea did not return calls for comment Thursday night. WBLI is owned by Cox Radio. A message left at their office in Connecticut was not returned Thursday night.
"At this point, a hollow apology and a mere suspension will not be appropriate," said William Floyd School District Board President Bob Vecchio, who called for Randy to be fired and for area residents to boycott the station and its advertisers. "You can't get a free pass when you attack an entire community."

I agree-- I don't listen to that station often in the morning- but when I do he constantly amazes me w/ some of the things that come out of his mouth. Serves him right!!!

me too, i think he is hideous & dana annoys me too with the way she talks. their subject matter is usually horrifying especially because they are the kids favorite station.

Honestly, He's a radio tv personality...it's par for the course. It's expected that they say outrageous things. That is what they get paid for. Not really a big deal.
ALthough, i do think he was asked to apologize and did not, he should be suspended.

TV personality or not - it doesn't give him the right to put down an entire town, or catagorize them in such a way - its just hurtful.
I hope they fire him - i can't stand him anyway.

i just sent an email to them... i really hope he is fired, not really for this incident, although i think he/she was wrong (what IS randy anyway?) but b/c i can't stand listening to the show since randy was hired.

I agree- I have heard worse
z100 made some awful comments when I was in HS about 4 tragic deaths in my town - much worse then what Randy said
15 years later I still remember that - doubt anyone will remember this in 15 days

I actually was at BLI yesterday to pick up stuff for my fundraiser and when i walked in News12 was interviewing Dana. Apparently someone had called News12.
They said there were more people calling in and agreeing with what Randy said opposed to being annoyed.

He has every right to think and say what he wants as it's his freedom of speech. If people don't like it, they should stop listening.
This is just a form of censorship that has become more commonplace and that makes me nervous.

I stopped listening to that show a long time ago. They are just too annoying so early in the morning - all of them.
I miss Steve and Maria! I listened to them for years!!!

I think was he said was stupid and insulting, however I don't think making him apologize when he doesn't want to, and therefore suspending him is the right course of action. It's a talk show, they give thier opinions all day long, it's what they're paid to do. Right or wrong, it's entertainment, and right now it's got a lot of people talking, a ton of free advertising for WBLI.

 I couldn't agree more. I abhor censorship in any form. I don't listen to BLI, never have, so I really know nothing about Randy or his style. That said, he's a dj and this really doesn't pertain to him (he's paid to be provocative), but I prefer my "crazies" out in the open for all to see and hear. Its much safer that way.

I agree. Can't stand them or Z100...
then after the morning shows they play the same 10 songs over and over and over ALL DAY! Yuck.
