Upsetting Comment - sensitive topic VENT

Yesterday at work a co-worker made a comment that had me so upset. We were talking about commuting and bad weather etc.. And some how it came up that me and my husband commute together (we work at the same company-different buildings) and she says how we should really be extra careful commuting b/c if we get into a car accident and both die we will leave my child without parents.

I can cry just thinking about this comment. Trust me, I am well aware of this fact and of course it has crossed my mind, but who says this to someone else?

Of course this morning with the rainy weather, I didn't even want to go in the car to get to work.
Not to mention, we only have 1 car and why would we come to the same location with 2 modes of transportation?

I didn't even respond to her comment I just changed the subject but really what is wrong with people? I am probably going to take this down later but needed to vent it out here for a bit b/c I was and am still kind of upset about it.

What was the point of her saying that, other than to upset you?
I mean, you obviously are aware of these things.
But we can't live our lives in a bubble you know?

OMG what is wrong with people?? I'm so sorry she said that to you. How is that helpful? Exactly what would she propose you do differently? Ugh. I know it's easier said than done, but try to put it out of your mind. You're certainly not the only couple in the world who commute together and the odds of anything like that happening are slim. Hugs!

i THINK (hope) that she was just trying to be helpful and make you aware of the risk. (as if you didn't know it already)

as parents we have lots of risks and concerns we need to worry about. this is just another one of them. all you can do, is be as prepared as possible for life's unexpected moments and do everything you can to avoid bad situations.

try not to let her get to you. some people just don't think before they speak. or try to be helpful, but always phrase it wrong.

So what does she expect we should all live inside and put a bubble on our kids and watch for the sky to start falling. I hate people like this.

Hubby and I commuted for a year. He worked a few buildings down from me. It made sense. I'd have said something rude like , you should be careful what you say, it may happen to you instead. ******! I'm sorry that just makes me so angry.

UGHHH. People literally have no filter and can say things that are really rude and obnoxious.

My DH and I commute together too (also work in the same company) and never has that crossed my mind. Like someone else said, you can't live in a bubble - just keep on going as is and everyone else should learn how to mind their own business!

My mom has said the same thing about flying (genuine fear). I've thought about it on the super rare date nights we go on. I also have really changed my driving patterns since having children (I will go longer routes that are safer due to merges & lights).

That being said, you can't worry your whole life away & definitely should still commute in together.

I don't think the person was trying to be a jerk, and it does touch home because it is scary...

So insensitive and just a stupid and illogical statement to make. I guess husbands and wives shouldn't walk down the street together on a windy day in case a tree falls on them. This lady sounds like an idiot, keep back 500 feet.

It is not the first time she has made a strange comment in general, but that just took me back b/c the topic is just so sensitive and imo not a work friendly subject/comment either!!!! I appreciate all the comments from you girls, at least I know my thoughts weren't an overreaction and that makes me feel so much better.

She's an idiot -
If SHE lives her life that way, and makes her decions that way - that is her business.
But really? So, basically if we're going to take her statement and think about it logically, you and your husband should never go anywhere together, without your children. - Never to a party, never on a date, never to the store, never ........anywhere?
Is that a NORMAL way to live ?

i love my mom but she loves to say this one to me often...

i'm divorced from DS's father and he lives in Florida. I'm remarried now. I'm also DS's sole legal guardian. If I ever have to take a plane, train, or long car ride my mom loves to remind me....if something happens to you Ian will have to go to Florida and live with his father so make sure you're careful.

Thanks mom. so not only will i die but my son will lose his mother and be uprooted to florida. this is always in the back of my mind.

but we can't live in the what ifs. try to let it roll off your back.

People amaze me with the things they say sometimes!!

Does she mean you should NEVER be in the car together? That no one should EVER travel with their significant other? That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard!

I feel worse for her because clearly she lives in fear!
