*Sunday 1/2/11 QOTD*

Morning! Today's question is brought to you by the letter P.
_____________________________
Public or Private? Schools, that is. Discuss.
_____________________________

We're gonna go public. DH used to be adamant about sending kids to Catholic schools (where he went), but over the past 5 years or so he changed his tune. We moved into a village with a good school district, which was a factor for us when we bought our house. What about you?

DH went to private, I went to public. We bought a home in a good school district so that our DC are able to go to public. We will probably end up sending them to private for a few years and then transition them to public school.

I went to public school and DH went to private. Ive always assumed public for my children and DH felt that you miss out on a lot when you go to private, so public was an easy choice for us. When we bought our house we bought in an area where there are good schools.

We would love to send DC to private school, but we just can't afford it. We both did public school and turned out OK Chat Icon We live in an area where the public schools are great.

Re: *Sunday 1/2/11 QOTD*

I went to public school K-8 and catholic HS.

DH did as well, actually he went catholic 5-12.

We plan to send our kids to public school. I personally feel it is a better education.

If we still live in the area we do now (which I hope we will) catholic HS might be an option as there are some really good ones by us.

Definitely public school. Here's my reason. The education field has become extremely competitive and getting a job as a teacher is certainly not easy. I've seen this first hand and have come across some amazing teachers in the public schools.
Private schools may have some more leeway with hiring and teacher's don't necessarily have to have a NYS certification.
The way I see it, why would I pay extra money for private school when my tax money is funding some great public schools. Of course this may depend on the area you live in, but IMHO all of the elementary schools are great!

Re: *Sunday 1/2/11 QOTD*

I went to private and DH went to the public district we live in now. We are torn b/c I teach at an amazing private school that we in no way or form could ever afford (costs the same as my college tuition), but I get a hefty discount. I would love LO to be exposed to the curriculum and small class size at that school, as well as the opportunities that arise there, but also see the benefit of having neighborhood friends (though children from our town do go to that school it's a 30 minute bus ride.) I think LO will at least start prenursery there (age 2) due to the convenience to my schedule, and then we can reassess as they get older.

Re: *Sunday 1/2/11 QOTD*

We currently live in an area with an INCREDIBLE public school, but it's so clique-y and competitive I hesitate to send my child there.

If we can afford it, I'd like to send our children to catholic school, but if we can't we'll move to an area with a good school district.

I've always assumed public. DH and I both went to public and had good experiences.

However, DH shocked me the other day when he told me he had looked up the cost of the closest private school. He said if we can't afford to move, which we plan to do in the next 5-10 years, that maybe we should look into private HS. We live in the district that I went to but I think it's not as good as it used to be. I still say public, but maybe not the SD we're currently in.

Re: *Sunday 1/2/11 QOTD*

It really depends on our financial situation. If we can afford private/catholic that's where our DC will go. I went to catholic school from pre-k through 6th grade (when we moved out of Queens to LI) I wish I had continued in catholic school.

If we can't afford catholic school we'll do our best to make sure we're in the best school district possible.

DH and I both attended private schools. Neither of us was totally set on sending our children to private schools so we decided when we were house hunting to buy in an area with good public schools. We will see in a couple of years when our ds is ready for school which direction we will take but for now we are leaning towards public.

Public-- we just moved to one of the best school districts in the state. We are doing private pre-school though, but I am not aware of any public options here.

DH was a cath school boy... i went to public school.

If we have the money... I'll gladly send kids to cath high school which is where I think it really matters.

But I doubt we'll have the money for that. So.. public school it is.

Re: *Sunday 1/2/11 QOTD*

Well, as a teacher, I have to say public. I have taught at catholic and public and public has BY FAR more resources. Like another poster said, it is very hard to get a public school job and they only hire top teachers. Public has more technology, higher budgets, and more opportunities for trips.

I was a public school kid, catholic HS. I would without a doubt send my kid to catholic HS. I felt it helped me get into a good college.

But, with all that said, my bff went to catholic elem. and has nothing but wonderful things to say about it.
