I'm gonna be the asshole... are these people are even here legally?
I agree with mssocialworker. I don't think anyone who is here illegally would want to draw any attention to themselves.I can't imagine they'd want to risk being sent back to their country that they most likely risked their lives to leave.

Good point. Just a thought I had when someone else said they refused employment when it was offered to them.

Eh, I have to disagree on this. When you are a criminal, or looking for a free ride, I highly doubt the police is much of a deterrent no matter what your status is. Illegal immigrants (just as those who are here legally) commit much worse crimes than freeloading btw and far from deterred by the possible consequences. JMO anyway

I have been following this post and the other before and i have never ever seen these people, granted i don't go to target, but i do go to BJ's once every 2 months or so. Never ever have had anyone approach me or have seen anyone outside.
In regards to them getting more aggressive, I think they should be careful because they are going to be aggressive with the wrong person, New Yorkers aren't the type of people that are going to take them invading their personal space

I want to know if I am the only one that think this thread is hysterical. its like an uproar cause there are beggers on LI.
Maybe im just used to it because Im from the five boroughs, beggers are everywhere. This not a new thing.
Crossing the GW, I see the guys with signs and feel like im home

Re: Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!
For me personally, it's not the begging that's disturbing. It's the fact that they are using children as a ploy to tug at the heart string of people to give money. Using children in the hot blazing sun, to stand on the corner like a prostitute and beg for money. Using children that might not even be theirs.
That's what bothers me.

Well i know originally it started as just the regular ppl and then the families with children. and in the original thread that started the responses werent centered around the children. It was more of how they are scammers and nusiances.
I still think its funny the surprised reactions. I guess im a jaded New Yawkah.

Re: Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!
It was probably not related at all, but I went to the Target/HD in Copiague last night and saw several Suffolk police cars just sitting at the far end of the parking lot.
This thread popped into my mind again.
Maybe just having a police presence will be helpful.
Also to the person that feels this thread is funny, I too have lived and worked in the city and was not really bothered by that there. I was also younger and didn't have my son.
However, having a child myself now, it does bother me hearing the stories of ladies that have had agressive individuals come up in their faces and of course, the ladies who have seen multiple young children in the parking lots, in harms way.
Don't want to start drama, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels you move out of certain areas to get away from a certain element.
With that said too, I am not dumb enough to know that bad things can't happen here.
I am a social worker, afterall ;).

Same here. I grew up in manhattan. Beggars were a regular sight on every corner. But when people drag their "families" out and not only subject children to the heat, but also teach THEM how to become deviants, it really bothers me!

Re: Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!
I was approached yesterday at the Hess station on the corner of 112 and 83. As I was getting ready to pump gas, a woman walked over to me carrying a portable gas container asking for money or gas to get back to Mastic. I thought it was very odd that she was lucky enough to run out of gas with a gas container in her car . I said no but the reason I'm posting this as she was asking, I had completely turned my back to my car which was open and my purse and wallet on the front passenger seat. I was not robbed but I could have easily have been while she had my attention. I just want to remind everyone that needs to pump their gas to get out and lock your car behind you.

I agree. I lived in the city and boroughs and was more used to seeing this sort of thing. But you don't expect to see it in LI< it's definitely not a normal thing to see.

Can't get sent away if you say your ID is at home or somewhere safe now can ya? Begging isn't exactly illegal but trespassing is. Most illegal aliens here beg carefully. Annoys the HELL out of me. Cops can't do anything really. But heaven help if you see a white/green boarder patrol truck coming .. haha place clears OUT!
Some folks around here purposely WEAR Border Patrol hats into places for the reaction. If you're male, big and buff, broody and just a touch scary enough, wearing that hat is pretty fun to watch reactions with.

I have been approached at Target in Levittown, they knocks on my the window of my car (where my son was sitting). Then the other day we where stoped twice in the parking lot of Walmart and we had a small child with us. It is scary when you have your child and they are knocking on your car window.

Re: Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!
Saw the "family" guy with wife, 2 kids (1 sitting in stroller, wife had infant crying on her lap)...right by my car at Stop and Shop in Ronkonkoma. He looked at me like he was going to say something. I just shook my head and looked away. They were perched on the little island with cars passing by (too fast for a parking lot). I think some are starting to wise up...I didnt see one person stop. I just feel so horrible for the children...and what they are learning from this...especially if they are looking for money only.
What PP's have said about people approaching them at daycares and knocking on car windows demanding money makes me super nervous.

Re: Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!
Was at the Walmart in commack late this afternoon. A man with a woman and a little girl. She was begging to go to the bathroom. They had her go by herself (around age 7) across an entire Parking lot, by herself into Walmart. Is it really necessary for the mom to sit there????? Why couldnt she walk with her?????
No one stopped. Someone did drop off McDonald's for them and were talking to them.l.l

These are people that force these kids to sit outside all day with nothing to do in 90 degree weather by high car traffic areas. They dont give a damn. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but they are sick to do that to a child. She's around 7...what if someone walked off with her?!

Re: Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!
Working in the city, I see beggars all the time too but I have noticed women with children a LOT lately! Poor kids sitting out in the heat. It really bothers me that these scam artists use children knowing that they will get to people's hearts.
don't get me started with aggressive beggars. DH grew up in a not so good area and his parents still live there. More than a few times people will just appear at your window and knock on it asking for money. One time recently a woman put her face RIGHTUP to my window (i guess she couldn't see in very well ) and even when I shook my head she wouldn't move and was peering into my purse (open on my lap). Thank goodness a cop car was a few cars behind DH and I and he beeped and she moved away. I always lock my car when we are in the area and forget about leaving my window down.

Me too. At lunch, I had a bunch of CVS bucks, so I bought milk and baby food, and gave it to her. Having kids of my own, I feel I have to do something but I will not give them money.
