Re: Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!
I was at the Target on Vanderbilt in Commack yesterday and 3 police cars were in the lot chatting with panhandlers (man, woman and infant). When I left the store the panhandlers were gone along with 2 police cars, 1 car was still in in the lot.
Nice to see that they are finally cracking down.

I can't believe this... I just saw the man with a baby stroller in Oceanside at the Kohl's Shopping center exit!
I forgot-are we supposed to call the cops?

It was probably not related at all, but I went to the Target/HD in Copiague last night and saw several Suffolk police cars just sitting at the far end of the parking lot.
This thread popped into my mind again.
Maybe just having a police presence will be helpful.
Also to the person that feels this thread is funny, I too have lived and worked in the city and was not really bothered by that there. I was also younger and didn't have my son.
However, having a child myself now, it does bother me hearing the stories of ladies that have had agressive individuals come up in their faces and of course, the ladies who have seen multiple young children in the parking lots, in harms way.
Don't want to start drama, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels you move out of certain areas to get away from a certain element.
With that said too, I am not dumb enough to know that bad things can't happen here.
I am a social worker, afterall ;).
Exactly! I moved out of the boroughs to have a better quality of life. I don't like to be asked for money when I am with my family. It's annoying. Makes it so much worse that they have kids standing on corners , its disgusting

Just to play devil's advocate though, you can't control who comes into the areas you live, nor what they do. Do people WANT panhandlers everywehere? Of course not, but it's uncontrollable that these things might happen. I think sometimes you just gotta roll with certain punches, as long as they're not hurting you or your quality of life to the point of harm.

I saw them there the other day. A man, woman and a young kid in a stroller.

Re: Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!
I saw what looked to be the same woman when I saw them the first time - same location behind Panera Bread in the parking lot sitting on the grass area. I drove closer and saw that this was a different woman. They must be related because they look of the same decent, foreign looking. The man was different too and this time they had what looked to be a 3 years old. I am so sick of these people using their children as a ploy. I don't know if these are even their children! That is what frightens me!
I saw the man grab the toddlers arm in a very rough manner. I parked close by and called the authorities. I alerted them to the area. I do not know if the cops came by. I could not stay and wait because I was on my lunch hour.
I really hope these children are not being harmed. The pan handling is not what bothers me so much. It's a nusisence but you don't have to give them money... It's the children and different babies I see them using to pull on people's heart strings.. The baby girl I saw in early August looked like she was suffering from heat stroke.. :(
