Re: Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!

Something like this happened to me in Tulsa, Ok. Not sure if I had posted this before. They are aggressive. They come right up to you with id and a sob story.
I was along daylight leaving Ruby Tuesday across from my hotel very crowded parking lot. The man came up to me telling me he needed money, food for his family and offered to show me his license. I ignored him pus I was thinking this cannot be happening to me and the more I paid him no attention, he got very angry.

I jumped in my car and was so freaked out.
I called the local police and they knew exactly who this was.

I'm not surprised that they're getting more aggressive. Plus the word is spreading.

I read a good book called Gypsy Boy.
A memoir by a British Gypsy and many of his family rob, steal and panhandle so they don't have to work and keep their benefits.

I haven't seen the people we've been talking about here but it sounds exactly like the man who was bugging me.

I saw a girl at the Target in levittown about a week ago holding up a handmade sign asking for money for her little brothers at home.

A few days ago, the same girl holding the same sign was near Green Acres Mall walking from car to car knocking on the windows of the cars that were stopped at a red light. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

The 2 families I saw last week positioned themselves at stop signs or by a traffic light so they could get right up to your car. It's bad.

Re: Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!

Even though I have been commenting on this topic I was hesitant to post about someting that happened to me. I was in the parking lot about to turn into a parking spot and had to come to an abrupt short stop. A woman came right up to the window as I was turning into the spot. she was very quick and right at my window. It scared the hell out of me to all the sudden see her at my window. She had small children with her and at first I thought she came at me because I hit one. She was asking for money.
I know it sounds like an over-reaction on my part to be so upset BUT the thought that I may have hurt a child upset me. I could not get it out of my head.
I am an extremly cautious driver and have 2 little ones of my own in the car;; it was like she came up out of nowhere
I wonder if they are doing this tactic now because store managers.employees may be chasing them away

I am hearing from a few folks that they are getting more agressive in their approach- coming up to the cars while your loading groceries , etc...
may seem like nothing but be extra diligent as they MAY be expert pick-pockets
I know with children when your loading groceries or purchases it can be more difficult to fully concentrate on your belongings
As I said may be nothing more but just putting the word out so maybe before you get out of the car place your wallet/money inside your pants or shirt.

Thank you for posting this. I cant believe they are getting aggressive now. I'll definitely be on the lookout as I am at the store all the time with my DS running errands after work and such. If those wastes of life come within 2 feet of my kid - you'll be reading about me in the papers Chat Icon

It's not an over-reaction at all IMO- that would have thrown me too- I would have worried about hitting them. But that mother, if those were even her kids, is a fool to resort to that. She was damn lucky it was you and not an elderly person with slower reflexes, or a kid who was a new driver. She is risking her safety and that of her kids with that tactic.

I had one of the ladies come up to me inside stop and shop while I was shopping. She mumbled something about her car breaking down..she went from person to person asking for money..I even saw someone give her money and she kept going around to everyone. Really annoying and disgusting it's bad enough I have to look at them outside scamming people don't come begging to me while I'm doing my food shopping!

I worry about myself because I have a hot temper and if one of these scumbagss dared to approach me I am sure I would go off on them and then I'd worry they'd do something to my car.

That's pretty crazy! I wouldn't be surprised if they do that in an attempt to get hit so they can sue for more money. I'm sure they have enough money for lawyers!

This is what I was thinking. Particularly if I had my kids with me. I think I'd flip out. And if I saw them approach other people, I'd be yelling that they're the scammers from the Patch & News 12.

I'd love to stand behind them with a sign of my own, or warn anyone that came by to give money. But yeah, that probably wouldn't end well.

Re: Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!

This makes me very nervous. Not only the chance that these people could be scamming for a lawsuit by jumping in front of cars but what about the driver having to LIVE with hitting a person?? I don't think I could ever drive again if I hit someone and especially a child. Ruin a few lives for a few bucks. So, so selfish.

Add to that now they're more aggressive?! Stupid move on their part if they want this scam to last.

So scary that they are now going up to cars.
I've seen them sitting under the trees, but, not approach cars.
If I'm approached, I don't know how I'll react. I'll probably have a panic attack and then yell at them. Freakin' scammers. It's ridiculous!

I wrote on FB a month or two ago about something like this happening to me - although at the time I did not think it was a scam.

There was a woman outside of our local supermarket with a young boy who looked about my oldest's age (2.5). She had a sign (that I couldn't fully read) but I went into the supermarket and bought them a bunch of bananas, a rotisserie chicken and a small container of cookies.

I'm wondering now if that was a scam too? I live in San Diego, not NY.

I saw a woman and a little girl outside of Trader Joe's this past weekend too and ended up not giving them anything, wondering if it was a scam. Do you think this is all over the country?

yes I think it is. I'm sure there are people truly in need, but most of them are not sitting on street corners with their children & signs. To begin with their kids are probably in school, where they can get an education & access to a free lunch program.

Re: Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!

Just an FYI for all since I'm reading that they are approaching peole as they load their cars .......HOLD YOUR BAG. Even if you're holding the baby or whatver, do not, under any circumstances leave your bag unattended for a second.

I always have mine on my arm while I"m loading DC one, then put my bag on the floor in front of the other's carseat, close his door and go around to load DC 2 - Then I lock them in the car w/ my bag while I load the trunk (obviously you have to be careful to keep your keys on you !!)

I was pulling into a spot in BJs one night when I saw a kid swipe a woman's bag out of her trunk as she was loading the rest of her stuff (she probably put the bag donw - like we all do) and he had the complete audacity to get THAT close to her to literally stand a foot away and grab her bag from out of the trunk - Her cell phone and keys were in there so she was literally stranded.

lesson learned on my part.

I haven't either, but I'm often in my own little world half the time. The only people I notice in the Target/HD parking lot are day laborers and they don't bother me since I know they are looking for an honest day's work.

I did have a woman standing outside the door to Target in Copiague begging scream at me for ignoring her, a couple weeks ago.

She just seemed mentally ill/drunk to me, and there were no kids. I had my son with me so I kept it moving.

It's so hard to know how to act with these people, especially if you have your own child in tow.

You don't know what they are capable of.

I have been on the look out for them.

I don't want to start controversy, but do know some ppl who are not legal personally, and they would not be doing something like this.

Honestly, they are the day laborer variety who are actually out there looking for an honest day's work, not holding up signs, and putting children at risk.

In fact, the one's I have met are also doing everything they can to avoid bringing kids into this world when they have themselves and their families back at home to worry about.

This is why the more I hear about this, I think it's a scam.

Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!

One of these guys stuck his hand in my window a few weeks ago (I love driving around with the windows down in the nice weather - esp when I'm just running out to the store) and was very slow to remove his hand when I said I didn't have any money (I wouldn't give him any, any way, but I literally only had my cc and drivers license) even when the light changed.

I am so annoyed that I now feel like I have to drive around with my windows up. I'm very scared about either hitting them with my car or them jumping in front of my car. As a person who has been hit by a car while crossing the street twice (I have really bad luck), I am not sure I would be able to drive after that - esp if it was a kid. Hopefully the aggressiveness means that the police can take more action, but I bet they are just inside the law....
