News12 is investagating
by the way on another forum they were in front of a King Kullen that was hiring
the store manager said that these pan handlers are a scam-always using different kids and a baby they keep out in extreme heat
they would NOT work in King Kullen because they make MORE money from all the cars lined up giving it away

I would doubt they are homeless. They are probably living in an RV so they can make a quick getaway when found out.

this is from another forum:
"This has irked myself and my wife for some time. At first I felt terrible for them but then I started noticing something. Many of these people where showing up all over the island. So I did what comes natural to me and started filming them. At first I was thinking about making a documentary on the hardships of people on the island but that soon changed. While looking over my footage I noticed something. Many of these people were showing up in different places around the island and places that were very far from each other. One man was filmed in the red robin parking lot in Carle Place and also in East Islip later in the week. While looking through the footage I also noticed that the "wife and baby" we're showing up frequently with different "husbands". At first I made an excuse for the children because they could have had more than one and I might have missed them on the day it was the other child's turn. However there is no mistaking the fact that the husband has changed many times. The husband or wife either have multiple partners or they are swapping out in their roles for the poor suckers giving them money.

I have footage of 12 different men and 8 different women. There are times the babies are with different parents all together and other times with the same mom. Every time they see me filming them they immediately drop the sign or turn it around. I am usually very blatant when filming them. Most times I pull right up to them to try and get a good image. Every time the sign drops and they turn from the camera as if on cue. It's very odd that all these different people have the same moves. You might think nothing of this but when viewed side by side the movements almost seem choreographed. As if someone is teaching them what to do. This is also apparent in the eating gesture and then pointing to the baby as if to say "please feed my baby".

Today We were in Northport when we saw them in a parking lot. We went to buy groceries and when we came out we watched them for a bit. I again filmed them and the man and woman were people I had filmed previously but not at this location. As we watched it was approaching 7pm when a late model minivan with no license plates pulled next to them. I saw the couple laughing and talking to them in a way that seemed familiar and not like someone giving them a hand out. I pulled my car into a better position and I saw two men, two women and two babies (not in car seats) inside the van. They were obviously there to pick up this trio and I had recognized the two men from previous footage I had. The one begging finally saw me filming and told the men in the minivan. The minivan guys got out and walked towards me and my wife. I got out of the car holding the camera as they approached and my wife called 852-cops. Maybe it was my size or lack of fear but they stopped about 40 feet from the car and starting filming me with, guess what, their iPhones. That's right people, the same ones begging for food for their daughters carry very expensive phones. The police said they are "VERY" aware of the problem and were sending out a patrol car. The woman on the phone told my wife that they are looking into the people behind these groups. Why would the woman say that unless the police already know that this is a scam.

Today I saw the man pocket (assuming each to be only a dollar) 25 dollars in about 30 minutes (yeah yeah I know I have no life LOL). Never once did they feed the baby or make an attempt to get the baby anything. I have shots of him kissing the money after the people drive away and at times I swore they thought they were on a parade float the way they waved and bowed to passing cars.

I will continue to film and I will also call the non emergency number for the police each time I witness these people. We need to stop feeding this machine and only then will it go away. If we allow this to continue it will get worse and worse. I think this bothers me so much because I know so many people affected by this economy and they have a legitimate need for help. These other people are capitalizing on the situation and the generosity of good people.

I saw this thread too, this is great. My mom saw them recently in front of Chase bank and she noticed that the little girl was wearing new Ugg boots! She told the manager of the bank that there were people outside begging to all the customers walking in and the bank manager told them to leave.

So it sounds like unfortunately the cops don't find this a priority because technically they aren't stealing if people willingly hand them the money?

I think they tell them to leave- because I am guessing it's not legal to loiter and panhandle- but once they leave, that's it.
And then they just go somewhere else or come back later that day.
So crazy!

They'll be back, I'm sure! If not there, then somewhere else. I was at the Target in Levittown yesterday and saw the couple with the 3-4 year old boy that I saw at the Walmart/stop and shop in east meadow last week. Poor kid looked miserable sitting in the sun stroller!

I saw them in Levittown last week too, thought of this thread. The kids were just playing on th sidewalk.

Same here. They were outside the BJs yesterday. I did see a cop pull into the parking lot and wondered if it was for them.

Let's all start writing News12 and see what they can do!

It is crazy!! I hope there will be a huge news story about this just to make people aware. I think awareness is what will shut them down.

Can someone tell me what the deal is with Gypsies? I don't know much about them aside from they have really gaudy taste in weddings . . .
From what I gather, as a culture they scam and rob people to make money? I find this to be very odd and disturbing. I know there are scum out there, but an entire culture of people who have no conscious and think nothing of abusing other people, especially those who are actually trying to be kind and help them? That is really sickening.

Let's just say dh lost his job, his parents couldn't help us out or mine or my sister or any of the many people in our family...which is highly unlikely, none of the would ever let us get to the point of begging if God forbid we lost our job and had no savings. Say I had nice clothes on like some. Of you say you saw on them or an iPhone, I would def sell all of that stuff I had that I bought when we did have money to feed my kids before begging, and after all that money is gone, and after I spent months sending out resumes from every place including McDonald's, anything just to feed my family and I had no choice at all but to beg that sign would say please give me a job, not I lost my. Job give me money.

I don't think it is fair to generalize the entire culture as being scam artists. Many of them work hard to earn a living, but as in society, there are some bad apples.

ETA I saw them in the Target parking lot in S. Setauket a couple of weeks ago. There was a woman with two small kids sitting on a blanket on the grassy area by the entrance, and the guy was in the street with a sign pleading with every car that went by. As soon as I saw them I knew it was this scam.

I'm not sure she was intentionally generalizing- just stating what she has heard and asking people to clarify.

Can you tell us more? I'm curious too.

Exactly, I'm not trying to generalize, I just ready several different people saying they were Gypsies, saying this is a Gypsy scam. I'm confused about this, I'm ASKING if this is a cultural norm for them. Maybe I didn't word that clearly. I love how everything gets turned into drama.

I want to begin by saying I am not an expert on the subject matter or well studied in it. However from what I can gather, Gypsy is a derogatory term for sects of particular nomadic/traveling groups. Their are members of these traveling groups who make an honest living but those referred to as Gypsies do not. As their main way of supporting themselves they do non-violent scams/cons. People born into this way of life typically have a belief system that is very different from the main stream. They feel that the purpose of life is to acquire wealth and live the good life. They typically do not believe in violence, honor is very important and if caught will usually make it right financially to avoid jailtime or other serious consequences. Rebelling against the cultural norms of Gypsy society mean being excluding from the community and cut off from family.

ETA: I do not know for a fact if the people we are reffering to in this thread are or are not Gypsies. However from what I read this is a fairly typical Gypsy scam.

For those of you wanting to learn about Gypsies, NatGo has a show called American Gypsies. It's OK - typical reality show fodder but I guess shows you a bit about the culture.

It's produced by Ralph Macchio - not sure if that gives it credit or takes any away. Chat Icon

We have seen them a few times- once in Levittown outside of BJ's, once outside Pathmark on Hempstead tpke in the same area and latest in Baldwin in the Waldbaum's parking lot on Atlantic Avenue.

I havent read all the responses but last night I was looking on LI Craigslist in the pet and furnitue section and somehow I came in to this post, where this guy noticed they would swap, different husbands, different children. He started looking for them and video taping them. He mentioned how they were getting a lot of money and never fed the child, who was supposed to be so hungry. Then a van came up to chat with them and it was a mix of different husbands and wives, that hed seen before, there to pick them up for the day. Interesting. Oh yeah and one day when they noticed they were being video taped they started videotaping him with their I-phones. Chat Icon

I remember reading an article about panhandlers/people begging and the majority can work but don't want to because they make so much money begging. That is why I never give money to them. I give to organizations that I know will give to people in need.

I was just discussing this with my DH and he's so glad I told him! He spotted a family in Woodbury at a shopping center on Jericho Tpke and was tempted to turn back and donate some money but then questioned whether it was a scam or not. He's glad I gave him a heads up about this.

Hopefully the word has gotten out. I have had close to 1000 readers in less than 24 hours and have asked many of local LI media to help cover this story.

link to my article.

I plan to follow this story and will be open to any information and will pay for any pictures. Just FM me here. Let's get these scam artists off our island.

Just wanted to let you know that your article showed up on my FB newsfeed today (I don't think this person is on LIF), so word is getting out!!

Re: Seems someone finally called the cops on those panhandlers we were discussing!

I am hearing from a few folks that they are getting more agressive in their approach- coming up to the cars while your loading groceries , etc...
may seem like nothing but be extra diligent as they MAY be expert pick-pockets
I know with children when your loading groceries or purchases it can be more difficult to fully concentrate on your belongings
As I said may be nothing more but just putting the word out so maybe before you get out of the car place your wallet/money inside your pants or shirt.

This is exactly what I was worried about, they are not going to stand on the grass for long before becoming more agressive.
