Question about drop-side cribs?

Are you getting/did you get a drop-side crib? My mom is saying I'm crazy not to get one but most of the ones that I have seen so far in the stores aren't drop-side. Pros/cons? Why did you get one or the other? Thanks ladies!

Re: Question about drop-side cribs?

We got a convertible crib - I have heard some not-so-great things about recalls on drop-side cribs and IMO I think that cribs that are stationary with no moving parts have less of a chance of malfunctioning than cribs with movable parts.

Re: Question about drop-side cribs?

We got the Graco Lauren and it is a dropside crib. It says that it is a one hand drop side so while you are holding the baby you can use your knee and one hand to drop the side of the crib buti doubt we will use that feature on the crib. It seems a little cheesy.

Re: Question about drop-side cribs?

We had a dropside but it was recalled....had nothing to do with it being a dropside. I miss it. The one we have now is convertible and with the mattress lowered all the way, its such a PITA!!!!

Re: Question about drop-side cribs?

I was going to get a drop side crib but just happened to find a convertible one I liked and that I didnt have to strain to reach into (I'm only 5'2"). One thing about the drop side ones I kept picturing was my Chat Icon 's little fingers getting caught! Chat Icon But I'm paranoid.

actually, it's no different from a convertible. go to BBB and they will show you. my mom was adamant about me getting one until the woman explained this and physically showed us with several different models.

let's pretend these are the numbers:

a convertible side's height is 30 inches.

a drop down is 38 inches but drops down to 30 inches. so when the drop down is "down" it's the SAME height as a convertible.

Re: Question about drop-side cribs?

just a warning, they're going to forgo drop side cribs very soon. too many companies have had recalls and problems with drop side cribs. stationary cribs (convertible) are alot more sturdier and reliable. i'm very short (5'2) and had no problem reaching down in a convertible crib when the mattress was at it's lowest. you just have to "test" them all out. there are some that the front is taller than others.

This is what I was told as well. Have not gotten our crib delivered yet but in babysitting, I'm 5'5" and have no problem with the convertible cribs, even with the mattress in the lowest position.

Re: Question about drop-side cribs?

We got a convertible because there is so little selection of drop downs and when we went to look my DH felt really uncomfortable with teh drop downs because none of them felt sturdy to him.

I am 5'4 and DS is over 30 lbs at 17 months, I still rock him to sleep before putting him down and I dont have any problems with not having a drop down side. It was a cake walk until we dropped the mattress all the way down, then it took some getting used to for both of us, but really most parents dont rock their baby to sleep at that age anyway@

They are going to be discontinued soon, so the selection is very small.

Baby's dream has a couple cribs that are stationary but the top half lifts down. I'm considering that one.

Re: Question about drop-side cribs?

We went with a convertible crib rather then the drop-side. Our reasoning, we felt the drop-side was not sturdy enough. When shopping around, the convertibles seemed to be much heavier in terms of build & also sturdy. We wanted something that we could feel the baby was secure in.

Ah, spoken like a mom whose DC has not yet tried to climb out of the crib Chat Icon I definitely would not want the crib rail at the 'drop down' height unless I was getting DS out of the crib at that moment - it's far too low.

We have a crib that is both convertible and drop down. I am not even 5'1, DS weighs 26 lbs and I am 6 mos pregnant. He'd be caged in that crib unless DS was home without the drop down.

As to the 'cheesy' comment... Chat Icon What in the world in 'cheesy' about a drop down crib?

Re: Question about drop-side cribs?

We bought a drop-side for my daughter and I wouldn't do it any other way. I'm on the short side, so even with the lowered side, it was hard at times getting her into the crib, gently, while not waking her, as she got chubbier and chubbier.

ITA. The drop down height is VERY low if your not taking the child out at the moment...... I am a BTDT mom and I don't see how that keeps an "older" baby age 1+ in the crib very long....

Also I am very short...5'1.... even with drop down rail lowered it was harder for me to put DC in gently when laying them down when they were asleep once DC got heavier.....

Glad to see I am not the only one. I was starting to Chat Icon

Maybe b/c I have a short torso? Chat Icon

Taking DC out when they were older wasn't an issue b/c they would stand up...

It was putting DC in the crib while they were still sleeping that was next to impossible.

I actually think they're trying to get rid of them. We had ordered the bonavita peyton in the dropside and they cancelled the order. We had to get it with out it.

you're right, i haven't dealt with that yet. give me time Chat Icon

but the main point of this thread was moms worried about being short and not being able to reach the mattress. that's why it's important to understand the height of the sides.

babies climbing out are a whole other storyChat Icon

Re: Question about drop-side cribs?

you might ask this question on parenting, so that mommies can give you their experiences using one crib or the other.

i was worried about not getting a drop-side crib, because i'm not too tall... but in the end, we ended up getting a stationary (convertible) crib anyway.

i couldn't recommend stationary more. there's no worry that the baby can work his way out, and i've had absolutely NO problem with it being too low (i am 5'4 - 5'5). DS is 19 months, so he's been at the lowest setting for a while now.

i would recommend going to the store and playing around with all of them and seeing what you think. but i much prefer the sturdiness of a stationary crib, and got another stationary one for this baby.

Re: Question about drop-side cribs?

I have a drop-side convertable crib and couldn't imagine not having a drop side. Until DD could stand it it was very hard to get her out without lowering the side rail. Also if I put her in the crib when she is already sleeping I would have to DROP HER IN if I didn't lower the rail. My crib is very sturdy and I see nothing dangerous about it.

Re: Question about drop-side cribs?

We had two convertible cribs. Too many safety concerns with a drop-side. Even ones that aren't being recalled have safety issues. (There are many stories about DC being able to drop the side, or exhausted parents forgetting to put the side up, etc....)

With the convertibles, the mattress height is adjustable, so IMO, it's just as easy to put them in as a drop-down. DW and I are both about 5'6", and we've never had a problem.
