Q-anon trumpers co-opted the flag as if THEY are the only true Americans.

When I see the flag now, I think of what it DOESN'T stand for.

You said it!

Liberty and justice for all. That’s what is DOES stand for. You can’t fly that flag and then support voter suppression. Look at Fox News. They are practically bleeding red white and blue but proposing nothing for equality. I’m sorry if you think I’m ridiculous but I know I’m not alone in my thinking. I just feel like it’s recently started to represent the United States of trump.

Am I disturbed by the flag like the article states? No. I love what it TRULY stands for. But I’m disappointed that it’s been taken hostage by a large group of people who don’t stand for liberty and justice for all.

I tend to agree with you. The phony patriotism in this country has definitely tarnished what our flag truly stands for. There is definitely a huge swath of people waving that flag who have NO sense of American values and basic human decency.

Yes. Makes me think of the amount of pick-ups I see with US flags and blue lives matter or thin blue line stickers or flags drive with no regard. Not stopping at stop signs, speeding, driving aggressively, tailgating. Zero respect for fellow man/woman or those little things called laws. Some guy drives around with 20 flags in back of his ****** looking vehicle. It’s not safe. It’s absurd. He looks like a clown.

One flag is cool. But to shove it down people’s throats is weird.

But now you are saying what people should do by what you would. The flag is for freedom. Doesn’t mean they are clowns. Judgemental much?

I’m ok with expecting people to obey traffic laws. Flying flags and having pro-police items doesn’t give one the right to drive like a bully and put others in danger.

Betsy Ross didn’t intend for the flag to be flying at 95 mph on the expressway as Joe with his Punisher sticker races to Walmart, tailgating and cutting people off. That’s not freedom. It’s actually disrespectful to the flag and laws, as well a danger to others on the road.

I respect the guy who has an American flag waving proudly because of the real meaning for what the flag represents. I do NOT respect the guy that flies 20+ on the back of his truck, car, house , whatever to shove it in people's faces that he "THINKS" he's patriotic when really he's just a Trump fan. It's obnoxious and in my mind it gives off the vibe of a "look at me" ********* follower. You know the one that never had an American flag flying proudly up until Trump made it "cool".

How do you know if this person fought for the country? That they have flown a flag forever at home? That they have followed the fad of putting them on their car, even though I saw it before Trump?
We don’t know everyone who does this but it seems they are being put into one box of horrible people who follow Trump.

THIS is why this country is so divided. All assumptions.

Yea thats it ALL assumptions. Chat Icon You forget that the majority of my family is Republican, they voted for Trump. Not one of them has ever supported the military or waved the American flag outside their home or on their cars and yet Trump becomes President and its a flag flying contest all of a sudden. I know the type of people. There are plenty who do it because it symbolic of their loyalty to Trump and not the lives of those who fought for our freedom and everything that flag really represents.

Yes. Of course not every Trump supporter does this and like I said in a PP, this obsession with the flag was a thing before 2016. But you can't deny a lot of Trump supporters use the flag as a symbol of patriotism and what they are insinuating is if you are a Democrat you are not patriotic. I also don't stand behind the narrative that Trump supporters are hillbillies with pick up tricks who live in the back hills of Alabama. About 2 weeks before the election, there was a Trump parade going down northern Blvd. Started in Bayside and went through to Manhasset. The cars were covered with American flags, police flags, Trump flags, and people had their windows down screaming "merica". Real classy. Money can't buy it, that's for sure. It completely turned me off and made me embarrassed to be in a country that does crap like that.

Screaming “Merica” makes you embarrassed? Wow.

There is an "A" in America. Merica sounds uneducated. I thought about this thread today, I was driving down the Meadowbrook and there was a whole lane of cars and trucks with flags flying all over them. Trump 2020, American flags, and police flags. Obnoxious and inappropriate.

I see that a lot too. I think it puzzles me because it’s almost like adopting this Deep South culture when we live a stones throw away from the cultural epicenter of the world, very diverse NYC... taxes and cost of living is outrageous, most people are driving around fancy cars, and yet there’s this pervasive mentality that this is
the backwoods, apple pie, god & guns, humble country folk. It’s just strange to me.

This entire discussion boggles my mind. Sounds like a bunch of entitled people who look down on anyone who think differently even if they are doing nothing wrong.
I wonder if people drove around with Biden/Harris flags with American flags they would be clutching their pearls the same way.
Not sure why the south is so bad. Nicer people than up here is seems.

Now flying the American flag disturbs people

If Biden and Harris stood for what Trump stands for, yes I'd be just as against it. But they aren't the ones doing this. And yes, the deep south is known for being woefully uneducated, close minded, and racist. I'm not talking about Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas. But states like Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas...they rank dead last in almost everything. Education, Healthcare, infant mortality, quality of life, income. I mean...up until a couple of years ago the confederate flag was still outside government buildings. No thanks. I don't love NY, but i would take the northeast over rural Mississippi.

Nicer people? Have you been down South? Have you NEVER heard a Republican talk poorly about Harris or Biden or Democrat for that matter? Give me a break with your BS. If people in the south are so special then why haven't you moved yet?

Know what I was doing last Thanksgiving? Sitting in a room full of Trump supporters (down south) who did NOTHING but bash Biden, Democrats and spout off "'merica" while I just sat right there minding my own business. Trump supporters are just as bad.

Does the Deep South culture bother you? Is there anything wrong apple pie god etc? The same could be said for a person who lives in a suburban area but embraces street/thugculture.

Not necessarily. But we are having a discussion here that is fluid and I’m simply talking about thoughts I have had.

My point is that this wave of what we see here now on Long Island specifically is new and was only brought on after Trump came into play. There has been an effort to be loud, be heard, and be seen (brought on by Long Island Loud Majority and other groups here). There was always conservatism and Republican based towns on LI, but it just existed. The flags were hijacked in a way and this “merica! shift started unfolding. It’s just unusual being we are so close to NYC and culture, diversity, art, etc.

Now “Save Our Schools” is lurking and becoming embedded in board of Ed elections to fight CRT, Liberty Moms fighting possible vax mandates and 2 more weeks of masks at schools, PBAs are involved in schools. It’s a very weird, disruptive, and divisive time.

Funny as you have no problem attacking people online though. Guess you are the typical nasty person behind a screen that doesn’t have the guts to say how you really feel face to face.

I have talked about moving before. Eventually we will. Life is much more laid back and people are nicer than here in other states.

Quality of life according to NY. These people are happier than any LI’er trying to keep up with the Jones’s and judging everyone.

It is their choice. Personally I rather be in NYC enjoying the afternoon on the High Line rather than listening to country music at the Seaford train station parking lot with lawn chairs and Trump Really Won flags.

Good it is time people spoke up. It sounds like you don’t know anyone like these people and have no clue how educated many are and how cultured. They are not all a bunch of dummies.
This is why people are leaving in droves as it is all too much now.

It is their choice. Personally I rather be in NYC enjoying the afternoon on the High Line rather than listening to country music at the Seaford train station parking lot with lawn chairs and Trump Really Won flags.

To each their own.

Quality of life according to NY. These people are happier than any LI’er trying to keep up with the Jones’s and judging everyone.

How do you know? Have you polled the entire population of Arkansas?

Do you not know people who live down south? Never been there?

Yes, I know many, many people who live down south. I have family and friends in Florida, Alabama, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. I have also been to Arkansas. I've been to Louisiana. Those in Florida and the Carolinas love it. The others do miss the northeast, though not specifically NY. They miss the climate of the northeast, the mindset of the population.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Wow.

Funny as you have no problem attacking people online though. Guess you are the typical nasty person behind a screen that doesn’t have the guts to say how you really feel face to face.

I have talked about moving before. Eventually we will. Life is much more laid back and people are nicer than here in other states.

Attacking people online? Seriously?Chat Icon You obviously know nothing about me because I am just as outspoken in real life as I am on here.

I'm not the one who had to continue to live with those people after I left to go back home.

Yes. The difference is the people who have always lived there don't know any better. As per usual at this point all you are doing is just arguing for the sake of arguing because nobody except the Almighty windy weather knows anything.
The proof is there when many of those Southern States rank at the bottom of the barrel for everything in this country. As a matter of fact, it's not even the northeast that ranks at the top. Minnesota consistently ranks as the top state to live in. No Southern state ever comes close to other regions of the US when it comes to quality of education and Healthcare. I certainly don't think that New York is the bee all end all and I would be perfectly happy moving to a different state. But you would never catch me dead anywhere in the South. You think it is some awesome utopia then that's great hopefully one day you get to go there and enjoy the Oasis that is the South.

The west is nice and Arizona has a very high quality of life. My sisters friend lives there and loves it. It gets very hot but she claims it's not muggy and sticky and gross like it gets on the east coast.

Now flying the American flag disturbs people

Flying a flag on your car is a safety hazard and should be illegal. I don't need that thing coming undone in a crash and impaling me. Thank god people where I live don't do this. Put up a flag at your house if you feel the need to be patriotic.
