No- not mean.
I did something similar with DD the other day. We were shopping at Marshall's and somehow she got hold of a little metal Dora box. She was soooo excited by it and it was only 2 bucks so I was going to get it for her.
Unfortunately she kept throwing it and then crying for me to pick it up. After telling her several times not to do it, I finally left it there and told her now we can't buy it.

Absolutely not mean at all. At 2.5 they need to understand consequences to their actions. You told him several times, it's not like it was 1 strike you're out! It's a perfectly reasonable way to teach consequences.

No, its not mean, in my opinion. Thats a daily conversation in my house! If I ask my child to do something and they don't listen, there is a consequence. Its appropriate discipline.

Nope  I spent a LOT of years in sales - the cardinal rule - tell 'em what you're gonna tell 'em, tell 'em, then tell 'em what you told 'em. 
A modified version applies to toddlers: tell 'em what's gonna happen, let it happen, tell 'em what happened.
It *really* works for us around here
We do the same here and it works for the mot part.

That's not mean - that's being a good consistent toddler mom!!! I am 100000% on board with what you did!!!!
Cailen's little friend just had her 4th birthday party cancelled because of her behavior. Her parents told her if she doesn't behave a certain way over and over again, she would lose her bday party. And she did.
I don't think that's mean either.
If the kid isn't behaving, and they are told the consequence, and the consequence is followed through on (I'm not talking about anything that can hurt a kid) then I think it is the best thing you can do for your child!!!!

WHAT? That's mean, no way! I must be the ultimate b*tch then. The book I'm currently reading Have a New Kid by Friday by Dr. Kevin Leman suggests you say it ONCE and if the child does not listen you shut it off and that's it walk away. The funniest thing I read in this book is that "an unhappy child is a healthy child. Your job as a parent is not to make your child happy. It's to raise a child who will be productive, responsible, and respectful member of society."
