"Daddy told me to, Mommy!"
Nothing like a 2 year old who lies. Ava, who I consider potty trained completely during the day, stood right in front of me while playing blocks this evening, peed in her pants and proceeded to tell me, "But Daddy told me to, Mommy!" And when we called Daddy so she could tell him that, she said, "What?? I made peepee on the potty Daddy. Whaaaattt????" Lord help me! How do you deal with them lying at this age?

Do you confront her? I am already wondering what I will do when my DS is 2-3 and he lies. I want to encourage my child's imagination but I have major problems with lying. In fact, I know that I will be a strict parent when it comes to lying and I hope that does not backfire. I know that I will not accept lying from, say, a 10 year old but what do you do about a 2 year old?

Re: "Daddy told me to, Mommy!"
I don't know what the right thing to do is, but I didn't tell her to stop lying, I just told her she needed to tell the truth. I don't want to lable it a lie (to her) just yet because she is so young. But I definitely don't think this was an imagination thing. That's not very imaginative, it's an outright lie to tell me that Daddy told her to pee in her pants Part of me is laughing, but the rest of me is just throwing my hands in the air because I don't know how to deal with it.

My DD is no where near this point yet but I would probably handle it by reinforcing the importance of telling the truth and letting her know that having an accident is nothing to be embarrassed about. That mommy and daddy will not be upset with her. It's easy to say today though, who knows what will happen when I am there.

Re: "Daddy told me to, Mommy!"
What comes next? Hmm, I remember my sister saying "It's not a hickey, it's a curling iron burn"
It depended on the lie in our house. Sometimes we would ask "Is it true or are you using you imagination?" for the minor lies. If they said imagination, we'd go with it. If they still insisted, I would probe them more to see what they would come up with.
If it was a serious lie, we would say "that's not true. You are lying and I don't like it" granted as parents, we need to not lie too - telling your MIL you are on the way out the door to get off the phone when you aren't, etc. Not saying you lie but I've seen parents give mixed messages. I may be crazy, but I think lying can be a safety issue akin when they are not old enough to know better to keeping secrets.
I have told my son that he has a "tell" when he lies and that most people have them. I described a few that people have but would not say what his was. If that doesn't work, you can use my friend's method. She told her son she can tell when he is lying because he has a red dot on his forehead when he lies.
