I'm questioning a decision we made over the weekend - what would you have done??

The houses are fairly close to each other where we live. The house behind us has an elderly woman with Alzheimers and a full-time aide.

Saturday morning I was in my backyard and heard the elderly woman yelling at the top of her lungs "Get the hell away from me" followed by what sounded like slapping, a huge THUD and a scream. I called the cops and reported what I had heard (anonomously). They sent 2 squad cars over to investigate.

This morning, DH was in the backyard and someone (I'm assuming the aide) yelled through the window "She wasn't yelling or screaming, you know..." DH pretended not to hear her.

Now I'm wondering if I made the right call by calling the cops. What would you have done? Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sounds to me like someone might feel guilty? (the aide, not you or your DH.)

I think you did the right thing.

I don't think you did anything wrong. You were just looking out for someone's safety- your intentions were good.

i know what it's like to deal with altzheimers patients so i wouldn't have called the cops, but i don't think you made the wrong decision at all. better to have someone check it out then to have an aide beating a sick elderly woman Chat Icon

who cares what the aide thinks or says to you! you were only looking out for your neighbors well being!

You ABSOLUTELY made the right call by dialing 911. Even though you wanted to remain anonymous, as long as you gave all of the info to the dispatcher, I think what you heard definitely merited a call. Chat Icon

This is what I would've thought as a possibility too, but I think you did the right thing regardless. Chat Icon

you absolutely made the right call!! What if something terrible was going on and you never reported it? You would have felt awful. I hope they are thankful for neighbors like you who are attentive, many people would have just ignored it

You did the right thing V. If nothing untoward was going on, then no harm no foul. If something bad *is* happening then the aide knows there are neighbors who CARE and are watching out... Tough call but you did a good thing.

I would have done EXACTLY the same.

I would also try to find out who the woman's family is and give them a call.

if nothing was happening then why is she yelling out the window defensively insisting that nothing happened?

V, you made the right decision. The woman sounds defensive. Even IF what you thought you heard was not what was actually going on ... better safe than sorry.

If nothing was going on, im sure she explained everything to the cops and they went along their way. Its been documented and maybe that will prevent anything from happening in the future.

You could have saved this woman's life - even if not this time, in the future! Chat Icon

I would have done the same thing. It's not my place to determine what happened. That's why the police need to be called. They can investigate & if necessary take action - no matter who did the slapping.

The fact that the aide said something to your DH makes it more suspect.

ITA.

I also think that, god forbid there was something inappropriate going on there, it may deter any future happenings- knowing that, eventhough the patient can't advocate for herself, there are others that are looking out/listening.
