I would probably have done the same thing. Elder abuse happens!!!! Mary

Exactly what I was going to say!
I would have done the same thing...I had a situation where I used to live that was comparable to yours except that it was a guy hitting his girlfriend that lived two apartments over from us..we called the cops (without them knowing) and they ended up arresting him on DV charges.

i know what it's like to deal with altzheimers patients so i wouldn't have called the cops, but i don't think you made the wrong decision at all. better to have someone check it out then to have an aide beating a sick elderly woman Chat Icon

who cares what the aide thinks or says to you! you were only looking out for your neighbors well being!

I agree. We went through that with my grandparents when they got REALLY bad. They would be fine one minute and the next the Aide would be calling my mom telling her that my grandmother is cursing her out and telling her the get the h3ll out of her house. It's a tough spot but I also don't think you did the wrong thing. Chat Icon

I hope that there really was nothing going on, and I can't fault you for calling the cops, but just because the patient is screaming doesn't mean that she is actually being abused. Alzheimers patients cannot understand why someone is trying to bathe them, or trying to feed them, and they can often get very violent with the caretaker.

Sadly, this is part of the disease and this type of reaction is common, even with the patients own family.

YES.

Elderly people (and some who are not elderly but rely on Aides) are abused ALL THE TIME. Then, there are wonderful aides who are life-long caretakers and companions. You just NEVER know which is which, though. Kenneth had wonderful aides during his recovery - but there was one who seemed aggressive and I heard she had been suspected of it with her past clients so I wanted her nowhere near Kenneth. At the time, his verbal abilities were very limited where now he can tell us flat out how he feels so I felt nervous having her. Luckily, 99% of his aides were fantastic.

But you definitely did the right thing - people are flat-out abused all the time by their caretakers. Better safe than sorry, to just have it checked out.

I agree that you did the right thing. My grandmother also had Alzheimers and although I could see it is possible that she may have been the one to scream or hit, you just never know. Better safe than sorry!

I would've done the same thing. You're being a concerned neighbor. Just ignore. Chat Icon

I would've done the same thing, and If I heard it again, I'd probably do the same thing again. You can never be too sure what happens behind closed doors.

How many times do you hear stories about people screaming for help and no one does a thing about it?

I think you did the right thing, you heard what sounded like a dangerous situation and you acted in a responsible, decent way. What if it was the aide being abused by the elderly person - would she be so angry about you calling the cops then? I'd think not.

I think you totally made the right call. If heaven forbid there is a history of calls, then the authorities can handle it better.

Why would you question yourself? You heard someone screaming than heard something that sounded like a thud. Something didn't seem right and you went with your gut.
Better that than not doing anything and learning later that something really was going on and you did nothing about it. Imagine how you would be questioning your decision than.

You did the right thing.Chat Icon

you made the right decision. i would have called too. she could have been yelling that at anybody (like an intruder). It's not like you called the aide's manager and reported her for abuse, you called 911 because it sounded like an emergency. Chat Icon

You absolutely did the right thing and I would have done the same. Think about if it had been different and you hadn't called and something did happen.

Totally agree! I would have called. I live in a co-op and call the cops all the time. I would rather call and have them check something out in case something is not right. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if something went wrong and I didn't report it.
