Re: I'm questioning a decision we made over the weekend - what would you have done??
I think you did the right thing. Elderly people can get pretty nasty and violent, so it is possible the patient was being difficult, but better to be safe than sorry. If it were my family member I'd be grateful you did what you did.

V, we recently had a case addressing this EXACT issue. Please do not think for ONE second that you did anything wrong!! When it comes to elderly people who cannot always care for themselves, it is always better to be safe than sorry!

You did the right thing. A lot of elderly/disabled people are emotionaly/mentally and physically abused by family and aides.
The fact that the aide said what she said, clearly said there was indeed something going on.

i know what it's like to deal with altzheimers patients so i wouldn't have called the cops, but i don't think you made the wrong decision at all. better to have someone check it out then to have an aide beating a sick elderly woman
who cares what the aide thinks or says to you! you were only looking out for your neighbors well being!
this is exactly what I was thinking as I too have experience with alzheimbers PTs....but it's definitely a tough decision and I think you made the right call. Better to be safe then sorry!

Here's my thinking: You called, they came and checked it out. Either way it's a win-win situation. On the one hand if nothing was actually wrong, then nothing was wrong and they at least know that. On the other hand, had something really been wrong, you would have alerted the right people.

Re: I'm questioning a decision we over the weekend - what would you have done??
I would have done the same thing. There was a woman that came into my job all the time with her aid and the aid was so mean to her, she used to steel her money all the time.. for instance the aid would buy her something with the woman's money and keep her change. Then argue with her that she gave it back already, right in front of us. She would tell her to shut up or hurry up, she even cursed at her. She would leave the woman for hours.. Finally we asked the woman for her sons phone number, (when the aid was not around) who lived out of state. We called him to let him know how bad the situation was, he was very grateful and the aid got fired.. Apparently she had complaints from other people as well.. The woman was afraid of her that is why she never said anything before...

you did the right thing by reporting what you heard. if you hear anything similar you should report it again.
don't let intimidation get you.

Thanks for the reassurance, everyone!
I know that we made the right decision, I guess hearing what the aide said to my DH rattled me a bit.

Who knows, maybe the old woman was hitting the aide? I just couldn't let it go wth the noises I heard.
Better to me safe than sorry, I think you did the right thing.

I would have called too. I think you did the right thing. When it comes to the elderly... they some times have no one to look out for them or defend them.
