I think I agree with this. While Mss America doesn't exclude a black woman, Miss Black America does. It's an American hypocrisy!

But it did up until the 1970s.

Those who are not minorities have no idea what it is like in this country for those who are. Jews have been here for years, but just last month swatstickas were drawn on cars and temples in Brooklyn. Just last week a black Columbia university professor found a noose on her door.

I guess it comes down to that we are still not considered just "people". We are still considered Jewish people or black people. I guess when our religion or race is no longer an issue, then we can end some of the "American hypocrisy".

And on Christmas heads are knocked off of statues in the nativity scene in front of churches.

The difference in today's society v. 1970's is that MOST people (at least most of the people I know) do NOT consider this the norm, nor do they consider it acceptable. You are taking excluded examples and making it a general opinion when that is simply not the case.

If that is the case, then of course most actors, show writers, contestants in beauty pagents, would be white Christians, no?

Actually most actors and show writers are not of christian followings.

Perfect- so the point is more moot!

I have to disagree. I don't see Jdate or even BET as perpetuating discrimination.

Why can't certain groups have channels targeting them. How is that discrimination?

Because of this idiot!!!

Re: I really have to ask...

why, as a society, are we still trying to compensate for things that happened decades ago?

if today, any race can enter Miss America, then why is it necessary to also have an exclusively black Miss America?

there will always be racist pigs in this country, who will discriminate against blacks, whites, jews, catholics, fats, thins, etc. BUT at a national level, there are many measures and committees in place to eliminate discrimination (sports, education, employment, etc.)

by allowing only minority populations to have their own dating sites, pageants, scholarships, etc., we are only perpetuating the separation of races

Besides Miss Black America (which btw has several alternatives Miss America, Miss USA), what are they excluded from?

I am sure, legally, they aren't.
But I guess the argument is more about the labeling, and how it insinuates exclusion.

I was born in 1977, so why do I have to continue to pay the price of my forefathers.

The past should not predicate how we act in the present. That is why I ask.
Hey, date who you want. I just know there wouldn't be a ginormous billboard with Miss Whitebread saying go to whitesingles.com if you want to find someone to date.

I agree - though I was born in 1980!!! And, many of our ancestors, including my own did not enter this country until later on - mine came here after World War I. My ancestors faced an incredible amount of discrimination because they were immigrants - even though some of them were white.

As I said previously, I do think we have reached a point where enough is enough.

Of course its not the norm. But that being said, these things (websites, channels, pageants) are geared towards bringing peopel of a certain, minority culture closer and hopefully raising some pride. What is the harm in that? Do white Americans really feel discriminated against because they can't compete in Miss. Black America or because there is no channel called White Entertainment Channel?

I guess I see that the harm of discriminating against whites against the pride and benefits to minorities having certain events to bring those together.

And the reason I even raised those racist and anti-semitic acts is because prejudice against Jews and Blacks still exist. ALthough its not the norm, everyone so often something will happen that will remind me that there are some people in the US who don't think I, as Jewish person, belong here.

It also makes me think that if something like this is happening in NYC, what is happenign in the rest of America Chat Icon My grandparents lived in Poland and Russia for hundreds of generations before they were taken to the concentration camps and labpor camps. Same with my husband's family from middle east when in the 1950's the right for Jews to own property was taken away and Jew would be hung in the square every day until all the Jews left.

It's really sad because even when he is involved in a "legitimate" situation, no one pays attention because of all of the other nonsense he has done.

I think the point is...why are we at a point where it is acceptable for one and not another. The constant fight and struggle has been for equality....well, with equality NONE of t his should exist (on ANY side, black, white, jeweish, hispanic, muslim...etc)
There are reasons in my life that people don't think I belong here, there are parts of history that correlate this as well. I will not let it affect me.
I think that people forget that A LOT of backgrounds were shown prejudice upon entering America (irish, italian etc). To the exctent of Nazi Germeny and WWII? No, but some on my ancestors did die trying to end such things.

Re: I really have to ask...

I have a different point:
Do you think, by creating these minority pride groups, the minorities are setting themselves back by isolating themselves? I wonder about that.

Re: I really have to ask...

there are many sides to this debate.

this is what I know:

1) minorities still have "more" to prove in the world (education wise especially) which is unfortunate and sad. there is still isolation.

2) white christians are not all one and the same. and they do not "stick" together. and Catholics and other Christians do not always get along.

3) it is MORE ok for a minority to OPENLY racially discriminate or slur a WHITE person than it is if a white person does it to a minority. I see it on the train ALL THE TIME.

4) everyone has a prejudice of some kind. that doesn't make you a racist. but it does help to uphold untrue stereotypes and hinder la la la "togetherness".

5) today this country is more about MONEY than it is about RACE?RELIGION. they will (albeit perhaps begrudgingly) allow a non christian/non white into the uper eschelons of society if they have the money and the breeding to back it up. There are some VERY influentials Jews out there. In the govt. Blacks as well. but they (and their white cronies) are smart enough to know that Jed on the corn farm in the bible belt wouldn't look too kindly on it. but there is a lot of power to be had with money.

6) those sites are SEPARATIONALIST, if not discriminatory. and truth be told, white christians are paying for the sins of the fathers by not being able to do the same without being called racist, which is a completely different thing.

Re: I really have to ask...

My maiden name was changed when my ancestors came to America. It was changed to sound French because Irish immigrants were discriminated when they arrived in the early 1900's.

Discrimination will always exist in some form unfortunately as different is always looked down upon.

I find myself sometimes looked down upon by hispanics being my married last name reflects my DH's descent. I have been given dirty looks in airports when I go to the desk after my name is called, and actually asked about it by a bank teller...There are some people of all races that refuse to see that marrying outside is not a horrible thing.

Re: I really have to ask...

I was actually having a discussion at work recently. I heard on the radio about the daily news posting a story about Levittown. I got excited and went out and bought (I usually read newsday) It was an article written to educate young kids on levittown.

It went on to say how Levittown wouldn't allow African americans to move in to levittown. Pretty much made Levittown sound like it was still like that. IT WAS 60 YEARS AGO. Why keep bringing it up why keep going with it.I understand it hurts. I didn't do that I love levittown grew up here and bought my house here. I understand it's part of history. BUT I just feel like bringing it up over and over again is just making it worse and make the people who love this town look bad even though we don't feel this way JMO of course

But while 60 years to you may seem so far away, to the child of that man or woman who wasn't allowed to move there, it is still a reminder of the discrimination his/her parents faced. Its still recent history.

The holocaust, which wiped out a whole lot of my family, had a profound effect on me. My grandparents saw the writing on the wall, but their parents and siblings didn't and were killed in concentration camps. My grandmother's family in the Ukraine was kicked out of thier home after living there for generations. I always keep a valid passport in case I need to leave suddenly for something like that. I just told DH that we need to get DD's passport, even though we don't have any trips planned.

Exactly- and so as a majority, we are forced into an exhile that we did not choose, limiting our rights because of the color of our skin and the religion we practice.

So you agree that it is equally unfair then?
