Here is the thing IMO. I think the best way to describe is is that people assume that someone/something is for white chirstians unless specified otherwise. Minorities, by the mere fact that they are minority, have more leeway to advertise their differences than the majority. Also, ones minority status becomes more of an issue in media and such than someone's white christian status.
I agree with this
Me too..

I don't see anything wrong with blacksingles.com or jdate or BET. They need their voices too.
I see NOTHING wrong with it. But what about white singles? that voice would be too controversial.
I suppose when whites are considered a minority in this country - when it isn't a given that things will be geared towards them - then that voice wouldn't be controversial.
It's kind of moot - basically everything in our society is geared towards and for, white america. Product, positive advertising, tv shows, movies, etc.
so a race has to be under-represented and have prejudice against them before they can be singularly represented in such things as dating sites?

What an uproar there would be if that happened!
I always think about things like that...
For example:
The Miss Black USA contest. Can you imagine a Miss White USA???
But there is. Miss America has been historically white. It's only been in the last decade or so that Miss America has actually been of another race.
Maybe the crowned winner has been white, BUT black women enter and compete with other women of different backgrounds, no?
Not until recent history. Black women were not even permitted to compete in Miss America pageants unti lthe 1970's.

But assuming you are right. It is discrimination. But IMO, minorities get a little more leaway when it comes to discriminating against the majority since they are, by definition, the minority. Not to mention the history of discrimination against minorities.
But my question is, when does it stop? When we can move forward as a country and a society and stop the discrimination PERIOD? Just because someone is in the "majority" does not mean that they are not "hurt" by discrimination against them.

It stops everyone is truly equal. When the nation as a whole stops assuming that most people are white and christian. When Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton are candidates instead of a black presidential candidate and a female presidential candidate. It stops when women truly have equal rights to men and earn the same amount for the same work.

There is something else underlying this debate. It's the fact that if that billlboard said whitesingles.com some would think it implies that white Christians only want to date other white Christians.
Therein lies the uproar.
It's ok for Jews to openly only want to date other Jews and for Black to openly only want to date other Blacks etc but for whites to say they only want to date other whites....well, it evokes sentiments expressed by groups from the past and present that are known to be extremely racist and want a "pure" race, etc.
That's why it's different than BET and Miss America.

I don't think that's the point trying to be made.
I looked up "White only dating sites" and the references were separtist websites. I think the "white only" conjures up thoughts/ideas of groups that don't want to integrate. Groups who's goal is not to unite all races, but to eliminate those that aren't white.

I understand what you are saying, but aren't we just perpetuating and continuing the cycle of discrimination? I am 3/4 white and 1/4 minority -however, I look "white." And, I have faced my fair share of hateful comments because I am "white." Why is that ok?

I don't think hateful comments are ever OK.
I am talking about websites, pageants or channels that are geared towards minorities.

great point...in fact that people that only would actually express the want to "date white" in public evokes images of KKK idiots on Jerry Springer.

I have to disagree. I don't see Jdate or even BET as perpetuating discrimination.
Why can't certain groups have channels targeting them. How is that discrimination? Anyone can watch those channels. Does Lifetime discriminate because it is "television for women"? Anyone can watch it, it is just geared for women. Just like ESPN is geared for sportsfans.
As for dating websites, the reality of the matter is many people (minorities and majorities) want to marry people with the same religious or cultural background. How does that discriminate? Any person can date anyone. These are just websites geared at bringing people together frmo the same relgion or race.

When the nation as a whole stops assuming that most people are white and christian.
I agree with everyone's points here.
But this one keeps coming up- that everything is geared towards white Christians, dominated by the same. But the point of the arguement is, they ARE the majority. Right? Because that would be the only reason everyone else would be labeled a minority? If that is the case, then of course most actors, show writers, contestants in beauty pagents, would be white Christians, no? It's not their fault, and it still seems unfair to openly exclude them from things. It seems hypocritical. I am in no way trying to make light of any of the hardships that so many minority groups face, but the instant racist label that the white Cristian community would get, seems unbalanced at times.

I have to disagree.....I wouldn't assume dating sites are ONLY for christian people -- there are all different types of races and religions on them (I should know -- I used to frequent them alot!). African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, etc. are not excluded from them....but having, let's say, a Miss Black America or the like definitely excludes others.
I think I agree with this. While Mss America doesn't exclude a black woman, Miss Black America does. It's an American hypocrisy!

Being Jewish, I can speak from that perspective. The fact is, (and I have seen it on this board), people just assume that most people here are Christian. For example, there was post a few weeks ago, "how often do you go to church"- not "how often do you go to religious services." Please note I was not AT ALL OFFENDED by this. But it is evidence of the way that the majority in this country thing- that most people here are like them.
I don't agree with the reference to this board, that post was obviously directed to people who attend Church service.
If there was a post that asked "how often do you go to to Synagogue?" I would not think the poster was assuming everyone was Jewish, nor be offended, it would obviously be a question I couldn't answer and leave it to those that the question was directed at... just like other posts about Purim, Yom Kippur, or any other holiday. Just because people post things that are not applicable to everyone, does not mean they assume everyone is like them.
hope this makes sense...

But it did up until the 1970s.
Those who are not minorities have no idea what it is like in this country for those who are. Jews have been here for years, but just last month swatstickas were drawn on cars and temples in Brooklyn. Just last week a black Columbia university professor found a noose on her door.

I guess it comes down to that we are still not considered just "people". We are still considered Jewish people or black people. I guess when our relgion or race is no longer an issue, then we can end some of the "american hypocrisy".
And on christmas heads are knocked off of statues in the nativity scene in front of churches. It's like me saying most things are made for skinny people in this country. AND HONESTLY THEY ARE
