I'm curious as to what happened after you said to the lady "she's three!". Did I miss that part?
It ended there and she said she is afraid that she will run into her again at this place.

For me what I found shocking was how more attention was paid to the 30 seconds she left her child than to the fact a woman pointed and yelled in a three years old Face.
I guess I'm the minority
That all could not have happened in 30 seconds. Clearly had to be much more plus the reality is the three year olds were sat alone at a table to eat.
Even if it was 5 minutes, it's not the 3 year olds fault that they were at the table alone! To me that just doesn't justify screaming at a young kid like that. if anything the mother should have been addressed.
I agree but I start to wonder if the woman tried to get the attention of the mother(s) and couldn't and decided to just tell the kid. I would think most people would tell the child the first or second time and then go and tell the adult with them. I can't see this all playing out in 30 seconds, no matter how "grouchy" this woman was.
I think I have already addressed all of this but it really did happen that way! I think she said "stop that" once and then turned around and started berating her.

I don't care if my kid started stripping and peeing off the table while singing the hot dog dance
I would never ever yell at another persons child
And to get in her face and point and make her cry
To me for this to happen the moms had to be pretty far away for no one to know what was going on and no mom to intercept beforehand.
Nope! It seems like a couple of posters find it hard to believe but I was only a couple of feet away, it was VERY loud, none of us heard her tell my daughter to stop and it all happened very quickly as I had just walked away! I don't know why this is so impossible to believe but if you do believe me does that change your perception? I was not in any way neglecting or endangering my child.
I believe you but your own statements keep implicating the choices that were made as the CAUSE of the issue. If it was too loud, then again, the 3 year olds should not have been sat alone without adults. If the view of them was blocked, it was too loud to hear, or you were too far away (you say you were not) then it was all bad choices. Simple solution, looking back, was moms and kids should have split up. End of story.
I have to be honest and say again, while I don't think the woman should have yelled, it must have been pretty frustrating to see moms hanging together and leaving their 3 year olds alone to eat. And you can't keep saying you were close by. Apparently the fact that you were "close" did not seem to help since you were unaware of anything going on until your child got screamed at. I don't mean to attack, you asked so we are responding.
No honestly how I have described it is exactly how it happened. I sat her down and got her food for her. Made sure she had a drink, etc and walked the couple of feet to the other table. I had just sat down, taken a bite of my pizza and I hear my daughter crying. It took me a second to get up as someone had to let me out. I was on the inside seat but I was watching my daughter and this woman the whole time while i was trying to get to her. It didn't take me that long to sit down because the person blocking me from getting out was not sitting at the time i sat down. I really can't explain it any better. I was no more than 5 feet away and it was no more than 30 seconds. You have a picture in your head of how this went down, and it's not accurate.

Actually I never said what happened after because I didn't think it was relevant to the story, but at this point my daughter was pretty upset so I removed her from that part of the pizza place and went toward the back which was empty. The owner saw me and my daughter who was still crying and came over to ask if we were okay because he knows me very well. We are in there all the time and I also had a business relationship with this pizza place in the past. He was upset knowing that I was upset and he knew it had to do with this woman but I didn't get into it. I was just too rattled to even talk about it. Then I went back to the table and stayed with her until she was done eating and then we left. We are also in a rush because we take the girls there between school and dance class and there is not much time. We have about 25 minutes total. This is not a leisurely lunch.

How would you handle this? Stranger yelling at DC
I mean really - there are so many miserable, unreasonable, or just plain sociopathic f*cks in this world that we all run into or spot daily - on the roads, in stores, at work, etc.
Is it REALLY that hard to believe that the poster here ran into one?
I 100% believe her and the way she laid it out here. I much rather have some understanding for a parent who is rushing around with kids in tow than a complete psycho who would yell at a preschooler.
Scolding older kids who are damaging property intentionally - sure. A 3 year old who has no clue? A kid who is just maybe a year out of diapers being yelled at by a stranger? No.
Nothing should even be up for a debate here.

Re: How would you handle this? Stranger yelling at DC
I would have said exactly what you said-She's three. Maybe I would have added-In the future, try yelling at the parent, not the child. I would not get into it with someone like her b/c I don't want my kids to see me arguing with someone. And I would not be able to hold my tongue with some azz that yells at a little girl.
I get annoyed very easily. I have been witness to kids misbehaving/being rude in public and parents not paying attention. I would never ever yell at someone's kid. If I was bothered enough by whatever it was-I would speak to the adult. This woman was out of line. Sorry your daughter got scared by her

I guess it is the amount of time that is being debated and at this point, it makes no difference. None of this sounds like 30 seconds overall and she could have told her many times to stop and then just went off (which was totally wrong IMO).

Totally agree. It was a pizza joint..not a 5 star restaurant. The tables in pizza shops are super close to one another..at least the pizza shops I have gone too.
A total stranger yelling at a 3 YO is not acceptable and I would have flipped my shit.

As I said many times I don't believe she told her MANY TIMES, i think she told her to stop once, my daughter did it again and she went off….

Update
So, I told my babysitter this story last week. She was just at the same pizza place today and saw the same woman, and this woman was yelling at someone (an adult) for bumping into her. Clearly she's got issues.

She sounds like a lovely person and she's obviously an equal opportunity shamer lol
Girlfriend is gonna yell at the wrong person one of these days.....

Wonder if she gets her daily fix by going to this pizza place and getting annoyed with people.

I'm sorry but if that woman would have had that tone with my child, she would have wished she didn't leave her house that day. But seriously, I just saw that she was yelling at someone else.. I'd tell the management of that pizzeria that this old woman is causing trouble with their customers, and see if they have any insight on her and her antics.

I'm surprised (but not shocked) at some of the responses you're getting here. I don't give a a flying f*** who you are, NO ONE yells at my child like that. And she's only 3?!?!?! No way!! There is NO EXCUSE for a stranger to yell at someone's kid. Period. You're better than me bc I would have lost my mind.
And seriously give me a break - it was a pizza place not a 5 star restaurant. And I highly doubt she left the kid ALONE to eat. Lululu was 5 ft away. Get over yourselves. Nothing like kicking someone while they're down. I'm not saying you should blow smoke up someone's butt but seriously if someone yelled the way this old crank yelled and pointed at YOUR child in their face, I'm sure many would be singing a different tune.
This... i would have probably lost my mind and most likely would have told the woman to eff herself.

I'm going to be totally honest. I wouldn't have left my 3.5 year old alone to eat to begin with, especially not if she was having a bad day. I also wouldn't expect other patrons to move for me when they were already seated. I think sitting with your daughter might have prevented this from happening. However, if someone yelled at my kid, I would have responded nastily no matter what the situation. No one yells at my kid! Sorry it was a bad day.
Exactly this

I wouldn't have left my 3 year old alone at a table of kids, especially if the moms were not at the next table. I do think that was bad judgment, but it's easy to play Monday morning quarterback.
However, I think that a stranger yelling loudly enough at a 3 year old to make her cry is over the top. If a kid bumped her chair into my coat enough that it was a problem, I would move my coat. If she was banging her chair into mine, I would ask her nicely to stop or ask mom to tell her to stop. I can't imagine any 3 year old doing anything to me that would warrant that type of a reaction. Being annoyed? yes. Saying something,? yes, but screaming, pointing and making her cry? No way.
I think I would have reacted the same way. Getting into it with someone who doesn't seem rational in front of my child is never going to work out well for me in the end. I try to calm my child down and move on.

Cranky old ladies don't get to yell at little girls - being old doesn't give you that right.
It's not like her 3 year old was screaming, carrying on, throwing food, crayons - whatever and disburbing these women. The fact that the mere presence of 3 year old chilren pissed her off - well too bad, they have just as much of a right to be in that pizzeria at 3, as you do, at 70!
A. You saw a group of moms walk into a pizzeria with a hoard of 3 year old children - you could have VERY easily picked yourself up and moved over. Did you HAVE to? No, of course not, but .......why stay there? On principal? So youi had a reason to ***** and complain about the kids?
B. You don't yell at someone else's child - ESCPEIALLY a 3 year old child. If she wat that bothered she should have gotten up and asked who the child's mother was and gave YOU sh*t about it - NOT your 3 year old kid.
ETA - I would have said - I'm sorry she backed her chair up into your coat, but don't yell at my child.
Also this.
