What are you not believing? That we wouldn't flip out on a complete stranger in public? That we take responsibility for our children's actions?

How would you handle this? Stranger yelling at DC

If some person was pointing in my kids face and yelling at him I would have lost my shit, regardless of if I was in the wrong or not.

How close are these tables if you were only 5 feet away?
There were only 3 tables?

There are only 6 tables. they are all right next to each other on top of one another. literally there is no way I was over 5 feet away from her. And it's not booths, tables with chairs that if two adults are sitting back to back there is no way a chair is touching.

"So I walked away from her and went to sit down and about 30 seconds later I hear her start to cry. I IMMEDIATELY got up and went over to see what the problem was and I see one of the woman pointing in her face and yelling at her "I TOLD YOU TO STOP DOING THAT!!! You made my coat all dirty!!!! You shouldn't have done that!!!" My daughter then started crying even harder and the woman turns to me and says "She kept rubbing her chair against mine and it left a mark on my jacket!!!" The chairs in this place are REALLY tight. If two adults are sitting back to back it's almost impossible for the chairs to not touch. My daughter clearly had no idea, being that she is THREE that pushing her chair back would cause the chair to rub against this woman's jacket and leave a mark."

How many times in 30 seconds did she tell her to stop though? Seems like it was not the first time she did it and you never heard her being that close to the kids table?

No I had just left her for the first time and just sat down when i turned around and saw her yelling at her.

Honestly, I totally get where many of you are coming from and you kind of have to know this place to understand. Everyone lets their kids sit at one table and the adults sit at another. it;s not dangerous, the tables are on top of one another so it's essentially the same as sitting together. and this is not a Waiter/Waitress place. it's a pizza place!

Yes Katareen if u go back and read my responses u would see that my child actually didn't do anything wrong to the woman. Her chair hit the back of her chair. It would have happened more of an adult sat behind her. It's okay it's hard to understand but I didn't abandon my child alone in a restaurant for her to terrorize this woman. She was no more than feet away. And while she was cranky and that might have been annoying to this older woman, it's a pizza place. Not a fancy restaurant.

The more I think about it, the more I feel like she was probably used to dining in the back where there are no kids and she was probably put off by having to sit up front where there are children. And she took it out on my child. She was definitely wrong to yell at her. If any of you had been there you would have agreed. I'm positive of that. Was I stupid to leave her unattended for even a moment? Maybe. But even if we would have sat at the same table I would have had to go back up to the counter to get her pizza and bring it to her. So it's not like I could have been sitting with her the whole time anyway.

Re: How would you handle this? Stranger yelling at DC

I wouldn't have left my 3 year old alone at a table of kids, especially if the moms were not at the next table. I do think that was bad judgment, but it's easy to play Monday morning quarterback.

However, I think that a stranger yelling loudly enough at a 3 year old to make her cry is over the top. If a kid bumped her chair into my coat enough that it was a problem, I would move my coat. If she was banging her chair into mine, I would ask her nicely to stop or ask mom to tell her to stop. I can't imagine any 3 year old doing anything to me that would warrant that type of a reaction. Being annoyed? yes. Saying something,? yes, but screaming, pointing and making her cry? No way.

I think I would have reacted the same way. Getting into it with someone who doesn't seem rational in front of my child is never going to work out well for me in the end. I try to calm my child down and move on.

Re: How would you handle this? Stranger yelling at DC

Cranky old ladies don't get to yell at little girls - being old doesn't give you that right.

It's not like her 3 year old was screaming, carrying on, throwing food, crayons - whatever and disburbing these women. The fact that the mere presence of 3 year old chilren pissed her off - well too bad, they have just as much of a right to be in that pizzeria at 3, as you do, at 70!

A. You saw a group of moms walk into a pizzeria with a hoard of 3 year old children - you could have VERY easily picked yourself up and moved over. Did you HAVE to? No, of course not, but .......why stay there? On principal? So youi had a reason to ***** and complain about the kids?

B. You don't yell at someone else's child - ESCPEIALLY a 3 year old child. If she wat that bothered she should have gotten up and asked who the child's mother was and gave YOU sh*t about it - NOT your 3 year old kid.

ETA - I would have said - I'm sorry she backed her chair up into your coat, but don't yell at my child.

I said from the beginning it was wrong for her to yell at your child I completely agree with that.

However 30 seconds is a short amount of time, but enough time that your daughter could've possibly bumped into her 4-5 times if she was fidgeting and for all this woman knew she was going to be sitting there for the next 30 minutes and continuing to do so.

I know I was actually surprised that she had time to tell her more than once to stop because I am not kidding when I say it was such a short amount of time. Less than a minute, about 30 seconds. I think she turned and said "stop that" once, then my daughter pushed her chair back again and she went off on her. I am sure my daughter didn't even understand what she was being told to stop.

What I find unbelievable is the way some of you are practically scolding this woman like she made the most horrible mistake. The kid was 3. It was a pizza place. Mom was 5ft away. Dont make it out to sound like she is such an inattentive mother. ITS JUST PLAIN NASTY. Now while I'd love to sit here on LIF and go back and forth with you....I need to actually get on with my day. Don't have time to sit on LIF forever Chat Icon Have a wonderful day. And Lululu.....think nothing of these comments. You did nothing wrong.

It sounds like she asked her more than once though. I think at that point, I would have just went to the parent though and not yelled at the kid. Then again, many parents (not saying this poster did this) just ignore their kids and it is not even worth it to say something to them as they think they are doing nothing wrong.

Sorry but I am much younger and yes, I probably would have offered to move but she had every right to stay there.
I also wouldn't have yelled at the child but told the parent but it seems she told her more than once to stop it from what the poster said. If that was true, how, being only 5 feet away, and walking away for only 30 seconds did she not hear the woman tell the child to stop it more than once?

You were both wrong. This woman saw a group of moms sit their young children at one table and then the same group of moms leave to go sit at another table several feet away so the moms are now removed from the annoyingness of eating with 3 year olds. If I was one of those woman, I would assume that you are sitting away from the children as not to be bothered with them so when one of the children starts being annoying by banging the chair into her chair, she says something because none of the moms are there to supervise because they are at another table.

While I don't think the woman should have yelled at your daughter, she had every right not to be annoyed during her lunch. Had you been sitting with your daughter, the woman would have spoken to you but you were at another table several feet away. You also don't know what happened during the time you sat your child and walked away to the time you came back. Perhaps your child was bouncing in the chair and repetitively hitting the other woman's chair. Is she not suppose to say something because it's a child?

It's also unfair to assume that the women should have known to get up so you could have two tables next to each other so that one table could seat kids and one table seat the moms. I would have made the assumption that the moms would sit with their children at different tables. If you had asked, maybe they would have gladly moved but it's rather entitled thinking that a table already seated should move to accommodate you and your party without even having your party asking.

I'm going to be totally honest. I wouldn't have left my 3.5 year old alone to eat to begin with, especially not if she was having a bad day. I also wouldn't expect other patrons to move for me when they were already seated. I think sitting with your daughter might have prevented this from happening. However, if someone yelled at my kid, I would have responded nastily no matter what the situation. No one yells at my kid! Sorry it was a bad day. Chat Icon

I agree.

While I would not have expected them to move or even thought that they should move for me -- and while I would not have let my child, at that age, sit away from me... NO MATTER WHAT, no one has the right to scold and speak to, with raised voice, another person's child.

My reaction though, because someone like that isn't even worth my energy, would have been "Who is the child here? If that is the worst thing that happens to you all day, consider yourself lucky" ...Very calm, matter of fact, and that would have been that. After that, it's FULL ON ignore.

Thanks, yes this is exactly how i saw it. I should have said something about not yelling at her. I really wish I had. Even if i screwed up royally, take it up with me, don't yell and point at my child to the point she cries.

I was actually so close to the person that she was dining with that our chairs were practically touching as well. she could have tapped me and said something. As I said earlier it is hard to picture such a small place where the tables are on top of one another. And just as an FYI we do not seat the kids together because we don't want to be bothered with them, it's because they want to sit together.

But again, I do think that it was my responsibility that my daughters chair bumped hers a couple of times and I would have been more than happy to address it if she had taken it up with me.

I just hope that I never turn into a miserable b*tch like her! It does seem that when some women reach a certain age they have no tolerance for anything child related.

It was very loud in the pizza place as there seas a long line right next to the tables, all the workers etc. I can assure you that everything I said was completely honest. It seems that you don't believe that it could have happened this way but I assure you it did. I think she quickly told her to stop once and then turned around and went off on her.

I TOLD YOU TO STOP DOING THAT!!!
It seems that she must have said it more than once to say it though. That is the only reason I asked. I would never tell someone that the first time, it would take me a few times.

I am much younger and have less tolerance now that my kids are older, sorry. I know what I went through with my kids and see how others (again, not aiming it towards you as I was not there to see what really happened) act in public with their kids and it is getting worse and worse, IMO with parents ignoring their kids and thinking that they can do whatever they want as they are "just kids" or they are their "precious angels" (again not you, just in general).

I specifically said she had every right to stay where she was .......she didn't have to move, at all. I just don't understand, why, seeing a group of Moms come in w/ kids, and your table is going to be in the middle of the inevitable chaos, why WOULDN'T you CHOOSE to move? Unless, you're just staying there on principal, or looking for a reason to b*tch and complain.
I have 4 & 6 year old boys - I could have been in the middle of a meal and if I didn't have my kids with me, I would have moved over to let them all sit together. WHO wants to eat lunch in the middle of that ???? Even the most well behaved kids are going to have their Moms talking to them basically through your table the entire time ......... - getting up to help them with food, spilling a drink etc - they are kids !!

And I don't care WHAT the kid did - You do not yell at someone else's 3 year old child to the point that they are in tears. You have a problem with the kid kicking your chair? Understandable, she's not stopping when you ask her to? Understandable again - LOOK TO THE TABLE 2 FEET AWAY FROM YOU AND TAKE IT UP WIT THE KID's MOTHER !!

I have a better understanding of the set up now.

Being THAT close to the childrens table it would have been better for the two women to move tables. Not just easier for the group. The kids had just as much of a right to sit at the table as the women. Not to mention that this would have probably still happened even if the moms were at the table with them.
