My kids have non-traditional names but we did make sure to spell them so that they made sense and would be pronounced right by everyone.
I'm all for a unique spelling but it shoudn't distract from the actual pronunciation of the name. In the instance you mentioned, to expect anyone to call your kid "Gina" when you spell it Jena is kind of stupid. Jena is a name all by itself, I would've said Jena too. It would NEVER dawn on me with that spelling to say the name "Gina".
ETA - I do like gender neutral names though like in the case of that "Keegan" thread. My kids names could easily go either way............but at least you can pronounce them!

Yes we thought about it alot. DS has a very easy straightforward name. DD's name has several spelling variations but we went with traditional.

I think people mostly do it to be unique, to make their kid stand out from all the other kids.
However, spelling the name where it doesn't make sense could potentially backfire
my name is Rachel. I've seen various different ways to spell it, but the most bizarre was 'Rychyl'

I get the feeling that the parents were named Jennifer & John... and are all trying to make up for having common names 
I did a slightly ethnic name for my DS (I grew up with a very ethnic name)

Lol to me there is a difference between and ethic name like "Julio or Alejandro" then naming your kid John but writing it as Gon. Lol
Gina to me is a common name and if you wanted to be pronounced as Gina then surely don't write it as "Jena". That's a name FAIL, lol

We love my daughter's name but unfortunately it is one of those names that could be for a boy or girl. My accountant actually wrote son. Oops.

I agree with this.
My friend's DD is Rilee or Rylee. I can't remember. Anyway she said she spelled it like that because "it's more feminine" than Riley. Okay maybe in YOUR mind it is but for the rest of Rylee/Rilee's life she is going to have to correct people AND she will never find a souvenir/magnet/keychain with her name on it. I'm quite sensitive to that because I could never find my name as a child. 
My name is spelled the traditional way. However, I have been called Christine, Christian, Christina, Krista, Krissy, Kristy, Kirsten. I know how annoying it is to have a regular name that people mispronounce routinely. To have it spelled weird on top if it would have been downright punishment.
I will never try to be different with my kids' names. It's too much of a hassle. Plus their last name is already a hassle and I had no control on that.

That's the most ridiculous name I have ever heard.
And I love non traditional. I love off the beat and path. I just never got spellings that were SO out there that the kid would have to go through life correcting everyone.

I was shocked when someone asked how I spelt my daughter's name because I've only seen it spelt one way.
The Gina / Jena thing would bother me tremendously if I was that woman. I probably would have changed the spelling when I turned 18.
And yes, we did pay attention to her initials because she almost would have had the initials A.S.S. We picked a different middle name and now it's A.R.S. which we still can have a little giggle but it's not so bad.
ETA: We didn't pick her name / initials to have a giggle, we really liked the name and is just happened to give her the initials ARS which wasn't a big deal to us.

My first name is Kati-Ann, two very popular names at the time I was born but hyphenated and one spelled "creatively". I like the way it looks on paper but I hate dealing with all the misspellings and corrections. Family members, colleagues, and even my mortgage company and union spell it incorrectly. Meanwhile, everyone in school called me by my full name or used my last name to differentiate because there were so many Katies (several different spellings). I was one of 9 Katies in my graduating class of 180.
For this reason, my kids will all have names that aren't particularly popular but aren't unheard of either. We'll always use the traditional spelling and it will always be phonetic. DD#1 almost had the initials H.A.M but we caught it and changed the middle name.
Also, I can't believe someone named their child Embryo and expected people to call them Ambrosia. Those are two completely different words. That's not creative. It's moronic.

I think people have come up with such bizarre spellings, people expect it.
My son is named Patrick and people constantly ask me how it's spelled. I can't even think of another way to spell that. Lol.

Not italian spelling...Italians spell Gina with the G not the J.
I thought maybe bc her last name is Italian. I've seen "Jina" too. I guess just trying to be different.
People mess up "Brielle" and say "Briella".
A lot of people call me Christina and it used to bother me. My car pmt is under Christina because that's what the dealer put in the system years ago and I've always gotten cars from that place. Lol. It used to bother me a lot so I can't imagine what that poor girl goes through.

Its funny because my name is gina and i have had one family member who has always spelt it incorrectly. Ive received cards wth my name spelt: gena, jena, jina so i actually saw "jena" and gina
I would have never called her "jenna" either.
I do like common spellings.

I totally obsessed about my girls names. Our last name is actually a first name as well for both a boy or girl. We named our youngest Aubrey which to me sounds femine but I guess it's unisex and I'm finding out is also a last name. Twice at the pharmacy I've been asked which name is her first name and I never ever thought of that before she was born. I don't regret it because it's her name but I wish I would have thought of that. We also spelt her middle name different Elisabeth rather than the traditional spelling because dh wanted to use the name after his grandmother and I didn't want to use the name because of his mother also had that name so I compromised and used a different spelling. Poor kid hopefully my Aubrey Elisabeth will grow up without being teased and everyone will know it's a girls name and will know Aubrey is her first name.

I think sometimes nationality plays in. It did for us. 2 out of 3 of our kids have Italian sounding names (Daniela and Luca, we do not spell it that way). We are Croatian, so the K replaces the c sound. They add in letters to make sounds or those things over the letters. To get that Yel/Yella sound you add a J. So my girls have a J in there names. I hate it that there names get mispronounced, but they don't mind and then the people often compliment the spelling. If someone is from a Eastern European country they almost always get there name.

We have so many bizarre spellings of common names around here - honestly, it's the parents trying to be different and trendy. It's unfair to the kids I think and stupid. Sorry, but, JMO.

DD has a very straightforward first name because her middle name is Chinese and not one single person ever can say it correctly. We wanted her to keep the name she was born with though. We have more of a problem with our last name which is a very common word. People say it wrong because they think it can't be that simple lol.
I love unique names for girls and boys but they should be spelled how they sound. Changing around letters just for the sake of being "different" makes no sense to me at all.
If she wanted Jena to be pronounced "Gina" she should have used two "e"s.....Jeena. At least then there might be a chance of pronouncing correctly!

I don't like inventive spellings of common names as I feel it causes the child more problems than it is worth.
With that said, I understand that in some communities - Mormon, African American, etc. having newer (non-traditional) names is a source of pride and I am always amazed at all of the new names.

We definitely considered this! Our daughter is Amelia and we almost spelled it Emilia but when I showed it to some coworkers, they pronounced it e-ma-LEE-a and our mind was made up that that spelling was out!

My dad's name was Patric, named after his dad, Patric. With a ck is definitely the normal way though!

Sorry, but I really hate when normal names are spelled "youneekly" or when people make up names. You're not being creative, you're setting up your kid for a lifetime of correcting other people. And it's not to say that people don't misspell or mispronounce normal names anyway, because they just do.
Now, if you choose an ethnic name I don't mind, that's a different story.
