Honest question about kids names
I am not a parent, full disclosure.
I was watching American Idol last night and one of the contestants name was Jena.
Its pronounced Gina (jee-nah like Gina Davis), but spelled Jena (like Jenna bush).
The 5 min spent on "her" everyone (and I mean every person who said her name) got her name wrong. The whole time was her saying "Gina, its Gina" "my name is pronounced Gina, not Jena". She even had to say it to the judges and to Ryan Seacrest.
I felt bad for her. And realized this is a 5 min clip of her life, but I bet she has to correct people every day, all the time.
Do parents think about that when naming a child? The Keegan question by Nervous Nell made me think about this.

I work with kids and deal with this a lot.
I love fun names but ultimately ended up naming my son something traditonal, spelled the traditonal way, it makes life easier--we will do the the same for #2, though if it is a girl the girl will be more modern than classic it will still be a name easy to spell.

YES, my husband and i def consider this when we picked names for our 2 boys. we also considered what their initials would spell out to make sure it wasnt something crazy lol

My name I have never had an issue except one teacher I remember in college had trouble pronouncing it. It baffled me.
Also love that I saw that post on FB when it posted "Erica," which is my name spelled

Same here. Both DC have very traditional names, and even though there are two common spellings of DDs name, if they see it in print, it won't be mispronounced.

I have no idea why parents choose these difficult to spell/pronounce names for their kids. I don't think they realize their child will spend the rest of his/her life with these names and the constant frustration of correcting people. Yes, you should like the name but you should also think of the individual who has to live with it.
My name is pretty common, but has several variations and I always have to correct people. Its super annoying. I can't imagine how exhausting it is to be Jena/Gina. Ugh.

Honest question about kids names
DS has a very non traditional name. When we chose his name, our families and friends really gave us a lot of flack for it. But now that he is here and 2 years old, everyone loves his name. They could not imagine him with any other name. People sometimes stumble with his name, but really it is pronounced the way it is spelled. I correct them and we are fine. At 2 years 5 months, he is starting to say his own name (he is speech delayed and only has a vocabulary of about 30 words).

I definitely think about these things. I prefer traditional spellings. My name is Jaclyn, which I think is pretty easy, and I have gotten "Jass-lyn," "Jayslyn" and "Jocelyn" as pronunciations over the years. My daughter is Alana, and that's pretty straight forward, although for some reason, my sister's MIL pronounces wrong.

i saw that last night too! i felt so bad for her. my name is Diana...but so many people call me Deanna or Diane. drives me nuts!
I named my son Ian (e-an)...after my ExH's uncle...also spelled Ian but pronounced (I-an)...like from 90210. His whole life people called him Ian (e-an)...so I told my ExH that's how we're calling him!
ETA my FH's initials are GAS...but so are all the men in his family.
My BIL's brother's initials are FAT

A guy i work with calls my DD HEF all the time.
My cousins initials are JEW.
I did consider spelling and pronunciation when i was thinking of names

Not italian spelling...Italians spell Gina with the G not the J.

I know I always hated my name as kid becuas it was know as a Russian boys name (Sasha). Even at work I would show up to a job site and people would be surprised at a Puerto Rican female showing up. Lol

I gave my DD a name that gets mispronounced all the time. I knew going into it what I was signing her up for and I did think long and hard about it before she was born, but no other name compares to it for me. It had to be THAT name.
That being said, I think we chose a beautiful, unique name that has special meaning in our family and suits DD so well. I feel it's a name that is worth the hassle of the constant corrections (hopefully DD will agree!). Nobody else in her class will likely ever have the same name as her (unless she moves to Germany or Austria and rewinds time a few decades!).
My DH was on the fence while we were expecting, but gave me my way in the end (of course he did  ) and now he says all the time how much he loves her name and how happy he is we went with it.
I hate alternative spellings for common names though. What's the point? Having to correct people all the time just to basically say your name is Gina? That seems silly.

Sasha is actually a unisex nickname in Russian, not a full name. It's the nickname for Alexander and Alexandra, though it's more commonly associated with being a male nickname. DH and I are considering it if we have another girl.

I named one of my dds Giuliana and I do sometimes regret it, my mil spells it wrong on every single card and even on gifts she gets personalized its so frustrating. I understand strangers but her own grandmother

My daughters name is Lia. I thought about how people would say it but I liked this spelling the best. I can see people saying it wrong but I think a majority would know what it was.

Yes, I know. But in the 80's and 90's it was a more common male name. The first thing was always you know thats a boys name. Now there are more female Sasha's. The guy from Step by Step didn't help my cause.
I always got compliments on my name but growing up I didn't like it. Now I appreciate it and love it. Lol

I def considered name and initials when I was thinking about dd's name.
I think it borders on child abuse what some people name their kids, LOL
Especially famous people and the names they come up are just atrocious. And do not think about that poor child and having to grow up with the name.

I see the CRAZIEST kids' names at my job (part of my job is working with birth certificates).... I could fill a book of them, literally.
Speaking of names being mispronounced, I just saw this one the other day... These are 3 siblings...
M'mah (pronounced Emma)
D'Aaron (the D is silent.. pronounces Aaron)
Embryo (pronounced as Ambrosia)
I see things like this all the time. WHY do that to your kid?!?!
