Spinoff to kids names sounding similar..
How come some people feel that their kids names have to "go together." I've never even given this a thought - even with twins.

Re: Spinoff to kids names sounding similar..
yes..I like names that are fun and different, so I'd never have a traditional name with a "fun and trendy" one...
same with "worldy/geographical" names...I could never have a Paris and then a Dallas.
also when it comes to nationality names..... I probably wouldn't pair a french name and an irish name.
that's not to say that non-matching names don't fit well, though. and besides, i'm a weirdo who may be having two kids with ryhming names...so don't go by me!

Re: Spinoff to kids names sounding similar..
Some people like patterns I guess.
Why did the Duggars give their children all "J" names?
Why did George Foreman name all of his kids "George"?

easy...so when he passes on, the next kid can step up and take over the grill business. same name. keeps customers in touch with the product. (not sure if that is true, just trying to be funny)

Re: Spinoff to kids names sounding similar..
I don't know why specifically I feel this way for my own kids...I never even think about it when hearing someone elses...
For my DC's they have sort of modernish names so if I snuck a Harvey or Gertrude in there I think it would sound odd...Or something extremely ethnic like Fredrika or Giuseppe wouldn't blend...
I go one step further and am trying to not have any of my kids names END in the same letter sound ( I always sound out in my head what sounds "right" on our holiday cards ) But that really limits my choices, so we may have to cave a little but I'm trying not to

Re: Spinoff to kids names sounding similar..
I have to admit that I auditioned DS2's name with DS1's name...wanted to make sure there was a flow. Of course, just because I think they go together doesn't mean they do
But truthfully...I don't know why I wanted it that way. Maybe along the lines of what Bops was saying.

I think it's because when you get hit in the head that many times, it's all he can do to remember HIS name, so whenever they had another kid, and they asked him for a name, he just said "George"...
"What do you want for dinner?" .... "George"...
"What kind of car should we buy?" ..."George"....

When coming up with Tylers name I actually practiced saying "Jack and Tyler stop fighting right now" -- I wanted to see how the names flowed when I yelled at them

Re: Spinoff to kids names sounding similar..
I don't know-I think the names we picked reflect out "style". We are not too modern or trendy-we lean towards traditional without being old fashioned and too common and the kid's names (Claire and Owen) reflect that.
When we were looking for a name for Claire, we didn't seek out a name that simply matched Claire but rather something that went with our style. I did test out Claire and Owen together-I just like things that coordinate I guess

Re: Spinoff to kids names sounding similar..
DH, DS and I all have names from the Old Testament....so baby #2 will also. It wasn't necessarily on purpose, but once we named Jacob, I decided we couldn't have a nontraditional name for just one member of the family.

This won't sound right, but as a Jewish person, I wouldn't give it a second thought unless someone pointed it out to me. Yes they obviously "go together" but they actually go together nicely regardless of the association.
Im one of four none of our names are kitchy or go together. Personally, I don't like cutsey stuff like that. The only way my kids' names really mesh is because they are biblical. The Bible is a pretty big book so the odds of that happening are pretty strong even though it was our intention to choose Old Testament names. Actually "Jeremy" is a derivative of Jeremiah.

Re: Spinoff to kids names sounding similar..
I'm not into names that are matchy-matchy...
When we found out we were having a this last time, we had our heart set on the name Ryan. But DD's name is Ryleigh, and we felt it was too matchy-matchy.
So, after a whole lot of names we didn't like, we settled on the name Brendan. We weren't in love with it at first, but we didn't want our kids' names to be so similar.
If we have a 3rd, and it's another , we're in real trouble

Re: Spinoff to kids names sounding similar..
i dont think they have to "go together" per say but i would find it a bit if a friend named their children
lets say
katie and juan ... i just dont think go together - kwim? obviously its their choice and maybe there would be a reason but I would probably ask why they chose those names

Re: Spinoff to kids names sounding similar..
Ryan and Colin go together but now I've screwed myself b/c if I have a third boy down the line, now it REALLY has to go I can't see doing Ryan, Colin and Sebastian or something like that (not that DH would go for Sebastian but I would!)
So, in my head, since I know I am a boy mommy through and through - I see 3 sons one day: Ryan, Colin and Gavin

It was never even a thought in my mind. I knew who I wanted my DD named after so we went with that.
My son.. same situation. Their names are not alike any way shape or form.

Re: Spinoff to kids names sounding similar..
If I do have another, I'm not going to think about what sounds good together, I'm just going with what I like. I had a hard enough time naming my son, nevermind trying to find something that flows with it. But I do like when I hear other people's names for their kids and they flow. I think its kind of cool!

Re: Spinoff to kids names sounding similar..
I'm not a theme person. The only theme name I thought sounded cute was when someone I knew had an Anne & a Zoe & the dad said "I have everything I've ever needed - from A to Z". I choose the names I like. I did consider initials & what they'd look like - for example my kids initials were not going to be @SS...but even then, how often are you writing your intials outside of your wedding monogram?
I know people say that names go together but names that rhyme to me DON'T go together. I do not like rhyming names - and for twins, I DEFINITELY don't like them.

Re: Spinoff to kids names sounding similar..
I'm Italian/Spanish and DH is Greek. We have a VERY ethnic Greek last name. I wanted a name that went well with our last name and wasn't a typical "American" name. With our next kid we will do the same.
