My DH works 14-16 hours a day, and sometimes 7 days a week.
If he gets home at 8pm on a weekday that is like a half day for him, but usually he walks in around 11:30 or 12 midnight. sometimes later.
And he starts work anywhere from 6:30am sometimes to 7:30am usually

Can't go by me because I work from home and make my own hours. I go weeks without doing anything and then wind up being chained to my computer for weeks at a time
but before I did this. My last full time job was 9-5 with 2 later nights during the week for deadlines.
I think your DH is right. I feel like everyone I know works more than 9-5 and long lunch breaks are replaced with wolfing down a sandwich at their desk

Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?
I think more people work longer hours now.
I think it's a combo of factors..
Between technology and email and being able to log on from home..to low staffing due to the economy and more work spread out among fewer staff.. To general fear of possibly being laid off and wanting to show your dedication.... People are working nonstop.
I feel like in this economy and career climate, you (universal you) can't complain about too much work or too many hours.
It's better than being unemployed and so many would give anything to be employed and working.
That being said, it's not fair when companies use that angle and hold it over their employees heads.

My work day is 8:30-5:30.
Most people stay later, but I don't as I have to pick up my DD by 6.
Your lucky. VERY lucky.
I have the same hours but dont get home until 7:00-7:30.
Nightmare commute to Midtown from SI.

I work 40 hours a week, but it varies day to day.
7-4 Tues
7-3:30pm Wed to Fri
7-3 Sat
DH on the other hand works 10-12 hours a day, 6 days a week.

I'm a paralegal. The general office hours are 9-5 with an hour lunch. My technical hours are 9:30-5:30 with an hour lunch. I typically work 10-6 with an hour lunch. Sometimes I work later than 6 though.

Me too, but I work 8-4:30. We get an hour lunch but no one ever takes it.
Generally I am here at 7:30 and leave right on the dot at 4:30 b/c I have to pick up DC

i get into work about 9:15, typically leave about 5:45 - so its an 8.5 hr day
However, i'm in advertising so we often work well into the evening on deadlines

I am a music therapist in a special ed preschool. My hours are 8:30-2:30. Can't say I even have a clue what the norm is!

DH works 12+ hours a day based on what he does. He also works 6 days a week.
My office is an 8 hour paid day, no set hours, as long as it's 8 hours billable and lunch is not included in those 8 hours. So if you take an hour lunch, you are there a minimum of 9 hours.

generally, i work a 10-12 hr day. no overtime. it's my industry expectation. (law)
i also work some extra hours from home in the evenings and often on weekends, etc. i have also pulled all-nighters and worked very many 12-16 hour days. i have never had the pleasure of a 9-5 job.

Get in at 8:30, leave at 6:00ish - eat dinner, and get back online to do all the work I didnt have time to do during the day (usually an hour or two) (Too many people and meetings during the day to actually get work done.)
4 days a week we eat lunch at our desks for 10 minutes. Fridays we'll go out for an hour.
That doesnt account for overnight and weekend work. Sigh.

Yeah, I didn't mention that part of my DH's hours. You guys are never off the clock. There are so many days that he comes home and never had time to eat lunch.

I typically work 40 hours a week but it varies sometimes...
There are some weeks, busy weeks, where I will work 50+ hours.
There are some weeks where it is quiet and I can be home by 4 or 5pm no problem.
I have 'flex hours' - I work in non-profit and I oversee programs. I do a lot of professional presenting and speaking. I also travel to a lot of off-site locations and meetings... press conferences, legislative meetings, etc. So, if I'm at some kind of speaking engagement or event at night - I can deduct the hours from my day and say, come in later that day, or choose to take a half day on another day, etc.
I just have to keep track of it and log it, it's no problem.
But, typically it is 40 hours and 8-4 or 9-5 depending on what I want.

i average about 95 hrs every 2 weeks, sometimes more.
10-12 hr days no breaks.. but then i'll get lucky and work a 6 hour day here and there. i never really know what time im going home which stinks when i want to make plans after work

Im exactly 8:30 to 4:30pm. Never any later, Im union and they wont let us work overtime
me too (except I'm happy there's no overtime-- I don't want to work any extra)
We have a 20 minute grace period so we are allowed to leave at 4:10 & I usually do.
Lunch is 1 hour but it's considered unpaid.
DH works 8am - 2:30pm but he always does extra work & never leaves at that time. He usually gets to work around 7:50 and doesn't leave until around 4.

I come in early, but it's because I'm not a morning person and need to ease into my day. In my position working extra hours isn't expected or required.

I'm sellf-employed, but Dh works 10 to 11 hours per day. He starts at 8 and ends between 6 and 7. That is what is expected for someone in his position. It sucks, I wish he was able to get home earlier

How about a 35 hr work week?
DH works for the city and only needs to work 35 hours per week while I only work 40 hours per week. We're in Engineering and IT.
I would quit any job where I have to consistently put in more than 40/week.

But I'm in healthcare and from the salary thread, even with a masters I make crap so I feel like its justified that I just work my time and leave.
Please know that your work in social work is very much appreciated.
I work in a high paid field but I'm not loving it lately. It doesn't feel very fulfilling.

Both DH & I work local gov't jobs & technically have 35 hour work weeks (so 7 hours of work + an hour unpaid lunch), but we're both IT managers & often find ourselves working extra time from home & on nights/weekends (or vacation - booo) on our own time. We don't mind, though - it's not constant & it's the nature of our jobs.

During our non busy time we are a 9-530ish company. During our busy time employees are expected to work a minimum of 55 hours a week.
I'm in public accounting
Same here...and most work a lot more than the minimum 55 during tax season. I actually work part time because I know I can't work 60-70 hours during tax season with 4 kids at home.

My new hours are 8:30-4:30 M-Fri. I work in an outpatient clinic for a local hospital.
I can't punch in before 8:15----the hospital system which is a swipe of my ID card and then finger print, won't allow it.
I punch out at 4:30 on the dot. Same for my fellow co-workers. I think only the Director and some of the psychologists stay late---I know some of the PT/OT/speech people also come in earlier in the AM but I don't think they officially punch in. I also suspect they are just busier then I am most days.
I love my schedule though. My last few positions in my old agency, there was an expectation that you needed to stay until the work was done. I am friends with many who are still there and they work on average 12 hour days.
I do also work some P/T contract work though for my old agency, so those hours vary.
Last night I did an intake with a new client and I was there for about an hour. It will take me a good 8-10 hours to do the paperwork though.
My F/T position I feel like I have plenty of time to get my work done in the hours I am there. I am only with clients from 10-3 each day so I have before and after to do notes, phone calls, meetings and develop what I am going to do in their groups.
I am also only paid for 7.5 hours a day.
