Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

DH and I were discussing how we both work long hours and he made a blanket statement that there is no such thing as a 9-5 job anymore.

I said that there are jobs that are traditional 8 hour work days, and we just happen to be in industries where that is not typical (law/finance)

So, how many hours a day do you work and do you think the new normal is 10+hr work days?

I'm not talking voluntarily taking overtime. How much are you expected to work to not be perceived as slacking on your job?

I work a 9-5! It is perfectly okay for me to walk out the door at 5pm. Many people stay a bit later, but no one really stays past 6-6:30. It is a ghost town here at 6:30. I'm in Marketing for a publishing company.

My dh works longer hours though...he's in sales.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

I work in a school, and my hours are 8:30-3:30 during the school year, and 8:00-2:30 during the summer.

My DH works in IT, and his regular hours are 8:30-5:30, so a 9-hour day. He almost never leaves at 5:30.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

I'm a teacher and my school hours are 725-215. However we are expected to be in by 7 and nobody walks out the door at 215 if they want to stay on the admins good side. I am usually there from 6:50 to 2:45. So it is about 8 hours a day. Days we have meetings are 9 hours.

My DH works in retail and he works 10 hour days. That is just how his company does it. The upper management has a minimum of 50 hours a week but I'd say he works closer to 60.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

My company's official hours are 8 per day.

My hours are 8:30-4:30 with a one hour lunch break that I get paid for, 2 -15 minute breaks are also allocated.
I am in operations and logistics for export, so some days I do work longer hours the days my work load is heavier, but I do leave at 4:30 on the days I can. I usually get here at 8:15 or so. I do not get paid overtime.

There are still a handful of employees that are on the clock, so they will get docked time if they do not put in the full 8 hours or will earn overtime if they work more than 8:20.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

My official work hours are 8am-5pm but it's not always in the office and usually a combination with working remotely. I'd say on average I work 8-10 hours/day. It also fluctuates with what is going on. There are some weeks that I work 12 hour days and others where I work 7-8 hours. I check email even when I'm not at the office, so it adds up. I work in digital marketing for a large food CPG company.

DH is an attorney for the state and most of the time he works 8 hours/day. When he has a trial or something he may work longer or bring work home.

Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

I work 8-5 and my DH works officially 830-6 but has been there til midnight more than I like. I hate his job.

I only leave at 5 cause I have to pick DS up but I email the entire train and from home.

I don't think that most jobs are 9-5 anymore.

My work day is 8:30-5:30.

Most people stay later, but I don't as I have to pick up my DD by 6.

During our non busy time we are a 9-530ish company. During our busy time employees are expected to work a minimum of 55 hours a week.

I'm in public accounting

I am a 9-5 m-f job.

But there are times when I am coming to work late at night.

usually during inclement weather I have to wrok while evryone gets to stay home. During the hurricane, maybe 5 of us out of 50 people worked.

My husband works all sorts of hours and every other weekend.

When I was FTWM, I worked 8:30-5pm but rarely left at 5pm - usually it was until ~6pm and I would work at home doing reports or have to come in on a weekend to meet a deadline if needed.

DH works in research, and he works M-F, 9-5pm.

He has a "vision" that most people's job duties can get done in 32hrs' worth of work instead of 40hrs and I agree. I'm a consultant so I frequently visit other work sites and I do agree with this idea. There's a lot of water-cooler chat time, wasteful meetings, and inefficient use of resources in most companies I've worked at -

Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

Our school day is 8am-3pm, I get there at about 7:30 and try to leave close to 3 to pick up my son so I am at about 8 hours give or take. Also I rarely leave for lunch, often eat through working so I don't feel badly about leaving on time.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

My workday is 10-6 but I get an hour-long lunch (it's enforced!) so technically I work a 7-hour day.

ETA: My type of job doesn't really allow me to work from home at all.

DH works 9-5, works through lunch, checks emails at home...he's in international shipping though, so he needs to be available after hours for clients. However, he works for his dad's business so when he needs a flexible day due to well...any reason, really...he's got that perk. I don't.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

We are required to work 8 hours. DOes that mean 8 hours per day? No, there are many times that I can work much longer than that. It all depends on what is going on.

I'm a paralegal. The general office hours are 9-5 with an hour lunch. My technical hours are 9:30-5:30 with an hour lunch. I typically work 10-6 with an hour lunch. Sometimes I work later than 6 though.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

Our hours are 9-5 with an hour lunch, but I work about 830-5 most days and skip lunch. Some times I work until 530, but I try not to.

I work in finance for a not for profit and I'm in a middle management position.

I work for my dad's firm in a satellite office with one other person most days so that's why I get to be flexible. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

My normal work hours are 8:30-5:30 with an hour lunch however, those hours aren't strictly enforced as long as you aren't taking advantage and your work is getting done. I typically work from 9-6 give or take and have flexibility if needed. I also take an hour lunch.

DH is in finance and definitely works longer hours. There are times he leaves by 7:30 and gets home around 10 and works through lunch but thats really only during quarter and year ends.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

I typically work 9-545 so I'm close to a 9-5.

It's UNHEARD of for my DH to only work 8 hrs/day.

I am required to work 8 hours a day but I can make my own schedule so I work 6-2:30 ( you can start any time from 6 to 9:30 ) with a half hour lunch and two breaks.
