Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

Funny...my mom and I have the same conversation about DH's job (like it's any of her business to begin withChat Icon ). DH is working for a start up company. His official hours are 8-5 but at least 2-3x a week he doesnt leave until 6:30 or 7. My mother and father were state employees. She doesnt "get" why DH doesnt just leave at 5Chat Icon

Me on the other hand am a legal assistant for a law firm. I work 9-5, hour for lunch. I leave at 5 and rarely have O/T

Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

I have a mandatory 7.5 hr work day, and that's exactly what I work.

We are requried to work 7hrs and 45min a day (I wish they would just round it to 8 - it is really hard to calc vaca hours on our system) but, I generally am in the office 9 hrs a day with a short lunch and accessible after 5 and on vacation days.

There is no such thing as a short day or vacation anymore with all of this new technology.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

Before we were parents, DH and I both easily worked 12-16 hours per day. DH is a surgeon and I work in finance. I burned the midnight oil frequently and we both worked most weekends.

Now that we both put in our dues, we get to demand work life balance. DH works 8 hrs a day (7-3) and I work about 6 hours (10-4) a day. We live in the DC area though. Most people around here seem to have some sort of flex schedule whether it is due to traffic, kids, etc. We make healthy incomes and don't have the pressure to earn $$$ like we did in Manhattan. We would never be able to work these hours in NYC. Our mortgage for our 6,000 sf single family home costs less than the rent for our small 2 bedroom apt in the UES in Manhattan.

Even thought I am salaried, the expectation is we work a typical 8 hour day, 5 days a week. However, the company is very flexible and knows we all get our job done, stay when we need to do, take work home, if need be and cover weekend trainings, etc. So, they don't really "clock" watch us and if you need to leave early here or there, you don't get docked.

I work a 9-5! It is perfectly okay for me to walk out the door at 5pm. Many people stay a bit later, but no one really stays past 6-6:30. It is a ghost town here at 6:30. I'm in Marketing for a publishing company.

My dh works longer hours though...he's in sales.

Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

I work 8-4 and we have a 7 1/2 hr work day. I usually get in early but rarely stay late as I have to pick up dd. there is no room for me to grow here so I work my hours and that's it. But I'm in healthcare and from the salary thread, even with a masters I make crap so I feel like its justified that I just work my time and leave.

Please know that your work in social work is very much appreciated.

I work in a high paid field but I'm not loving it lately. It doesn't feel very fulfilling.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

Technically I'm supposed to work 8 hours a day (9-5, 10-6, 11-7...I make up my own hours for the most part).

But there are days when I work about 6 hours and then there are days when I work 10 hours. In the end it all balances out.

My time sheet says 35 hours a week. How that gets split between each day is up to me. (not including OT time I may earn).

DH has to be in by 8:30 and he can *technically* leave at 5:30. He's an electrical engineering manager so depending on the projects he's managing at the time he may end up working more. He usually averages at least 45 hs/wk.

But projects aside, 8:30-5:30 are the required business hours at his company with a one hour lunch.

Mine varies from 8 hours, all the way on up to 13 or so. I work a regular office job, and I also have two side jobs... But I'm hoping to win the lottery and quit some/all of them Chat Icon

My "hours" are 8:30 to 5:30- with flexibility since I'm a manager.
But my admin employees work 8:30 to 5:30 with an hour lunch.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

Our official office hours are 9-5 with a half hour for lunch. I can count on one hand the amount of times in over 7 years I have walked in at 9 and walked out at 5. IT, Accounting, Support Teams are the only ones who work these hours.

My normal day is a minimum of 10 hours (whether it is all in the office or split between home and office). But that is Rare especially lately. Because our clients are global and about 50% of my job is traveling we are set up to work anywhere so I don't always need to physically be in the office when I am home. Conference calls at Midnight or 4 am are not uncommon.

I am salaried, I do not make extra money, I do not get incentives for the amount of time I travel. Over the last few years we have cut down on staff too so it is more work and no additional pay. Management claims that we do not need to put in these hours, but if we don't, the work doesn't get done and it just falls back on us anyway.

I work in logistic management for corporate meetings and events.

I have always stuck to my required hours. I was told at one of my first jobs that once you get in a habit of staying late its expected. However, I am in healthcare/non profit and I am more focused on parenting and work/life balance than moving up in my career.

law/finance here too. I agree with you. in these fields, there are no 9-5 jobs. I'm in law and work a min of 8 hours a day, many days it is more and can be unpredictable and includes weeekends. DH is in finance and works 12+ hours every day and almost every weekend (not 12 hours on the weekend though unless its an emergency or something).

Whoops, I voted wrong! (serves me right for not reading the whole post!)

I work 9-5 and sometimes will stay late to get some work done, but that is voluntary. I am not expected to work more than 40 hours a week.

Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

Our office hours are 8:30-5:00 with an hour lunch.
MOSTLY we leave at or around 5:00-5:30.

Summer hours for me are a bit different. Its a lot more work and AJ isn't home so I have no one to rush home to. I work 8:15-6:00 fairly easily if not later.

School hours are flipped. I am out the door no later than 5:30 at the WORST. But I am prone to work on weekends for 4-5hours at least one or twice a week.

As far as 'wasted time' I have asked for help but get none. I am working over 60 accounts when the average person in my position works 20-30 (max). On top of that, I am back up on the largest accounts in the office because of my freaky ability to actually GET work done under stress when it matters most. I make solutions. I'm very good at it, but i'm burnt out. I need organization and catch up time. I will get neither. I have no assistant, no one to help me. 7 years no raise. And yet just yesterday I as given a new prospect account to win because the other girl is 'overwhelmed'. I'm too busy for water cooler crap and BECAUSE I won't find time for that I'm not 'in'. I also don't suffer the blow ups from Her Highness the Princess of Pain. I walk away. So I'm not invited to lunch, to chat, to gossip.. Heck they don't even call/text me when the office AC went out and they were TOLD to contact the team to dress down.

Work is hard and right now, its totally thankless.

I COULD get my job done in 40hrs a week *IF* I had better processes in place and the team to support it. *sigh*

(haha took me an hour and a half to write this post)

Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

technically my hours are 9-5, but I hardly ever leave at 5. When I pick up DS i leave a little after 5, but that's only once or twice a week if I'm lucky! For the most part i work until 6 or 7 and during busy season or a big project its working til 9 or 10 and weekends :(

I usually eat lunch at my desk so I can get more done.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

I am a SAHM.
I used to work 7:30-3:00 (Best hours ever). Some days I'd offer to stay until 4:30 (I was on the clock) if needed. I was a day care teacher. Not much of a salary in the field, but, a pretty rewarding job. Loved the kids and loved the hours!

DH's hours are supposed to be 9-5:30.
That never happens.
The earliest he'll leave is 6:15 and the latest could be 8PM (that's during busy season).
He's an Accountant (director of finance for the company).
