I'm a lawyer at a non-profit, our hours are 9-5. We get an hour for lunch but I rarely use it. If I need to stay late, I stay late, but not routinely. If there is work that I can do at home, I am more likely to bring it home and do it than stay past 5 (we don't get "credit" for working at home so I can't just work at home for a day or afternoon). And I have email on my phone, so I am usually doing some of that in the evening.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

I have a weird situation. I own a consulting firm where I make my own hours around visits to my clients' practices. Some days are 10 hours plus.
I also work as per diem employee for one or two of my clients and those days can be 8 hours plus.
I probably average 45 hours a week but I don't really keep track, considering the amount of research, emails, ect I do 24 hours a day it's likely more.
I travel around the tristate area for dental conventions and events. I'm trying to secure a position on the national lecturing circuit which will mean extensive travel but fewer in office days.

My DH has been known to work 7 days a week and/or very long days.
Lately he has stopped working weekends unless it cannot be avoided. He is his own boss so it's a change that was long overdue.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

Our hours are 9-5:15 with a 45 minute break. Everyone is usually out by 5:45, but most people leave between 5:20-5:30. I'm usually 5:30.

Working more than 8 hours is really an American mentality (I used to work for a non-American company). We, in general, tend to think that if you work strictly 8 hours then you're a slacker. Another way to look at it is if you can't get your work done in 8 hours than you're not being productive enough. That's how my non-American company thought.

ETA: I also think that how you are treated can affect your mentality. JMO.

Work is 8 hours but I'm answering emails as early as 4-5am. It's not required but if I'm not responsive, it has an effect on how I am viewed.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

My hours are 'technically' 9-5... but I am salaried and I hold a key so I am able to flex a lot. I do stay late and come in early fairly often. Typically I'll work 8:30 - 5:30.. if it's really busy or if I have reports to prep I'll work 8-7 or longer.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

I am based on 9-5, but I am an accountant, so when things are slow, yeah, I can do 9-5 but during any big project, a busy month-end, a quarter close, and at year end I can be at work until any time and on weekends (wknds mostly at year end).

DH is the same.. should be 9-5 but he gets stuck until any hour all the time also.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

It really depends - there's no such thing as a 9 to 5 in my industry. Some days its 9 to 5, others its 8am to 6pm, others its 8am to 9pm (like tonight). I work in management/sales type of thing so it really varies on what's happening and during busy times like now, it can be 12-14 hour days for a few weeks at a time.

Re: Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

I work for an insurance co.(staff counsel) and our hours are 9-5:30 although some days I stay until 6-7pm if I have a deadline or a trial. (Rare). We get remote email access and laptops so sometimes I work from home (like today where I didn't get out of court until 2:30 pm so just went straight home). I don't get bothered by working, I also have a part time job since I'm trying to save up extra $$ to buy our next home.

DH works for a school district, his hours are 7-3:30 but he qualifies for overtime when needed.

Help me settle a debate - how many hours do you work?

I'm a PTWM and I work 24 hrs/week. Technically my hours are 8-5 with an hour lunch. I rarely take lunch and some weeks I work more than 24 hours depending on what's going on. I work mostly from home, so I feel like I need to be available at all times the days I'm scheduled to work, hence the no lunch hour.

I work in marketing for an Architectural firm.
