Re: WWYD - friend and FF car seat

I posted a few articles and videos on my FB. I see so many of my friends turning their children FF too early and so many clips at the belly instead of properly placed across the chest. I hope they'll take a look but part of me feels like it may be annoying to post it. I don't know though. If you post it to your page and only 1 friend takes a look and changes their mind then IMO that's great.

or say something like: ugh, I cant wait til my dd turns 2 so I could swith the seat around, it's such a PIA to get her in and out of the car...

See what your friend says. If she doesnt know the recommendation, she'll ask why you are waiting until 2.

MYOB. I have plenty of friends who changed their kids before the 2yr. It is their choice.

I tend to agree.
I waited until after 2 but unless the kid was under 1, I wouldn't say anything.

MYOB bc like others have said, its a personal preference. It's not a law, so technically she is not doing anything wrong. There could be a reason he's forward facing. I personally moved both kids prior to 2.

I would also MYOB. I didnt turn DD until after 3 and all I ever heard was how ridiculous I was being. I am her parent and she is my responsibility. To each their own.

Re: WWYD - friend and FF car seat

If you absolutely MUST say something (like you're not going to be able to sleep again until you do), I would phrase it in a way that sounds like you also thought the rec was 1 year until another mom fwded you these informative links so you wanted to pass it forward in case she didn't know either, but either way everyone makes their own decisions.

Personally, I would not say anything. I have friends who turned their kids before 2 yrs and were well informed before they did so. I also just turned DD and she is 18 months.

I would feel the way you do- and have felt this way before. Especially in situations, like you said, where you feel the mom just literally is unaware and would rather know. When my older son was an infant, I had no clue that the chest clip was supposed to be pulled up to their armpits. A friend pointed it out to me one day (after going to a car seat safety class and just learning it herself) and I was so grateful. What I will do from time to time, when I come across a good car seat safety article or video, is post it to FB and say something like "A good read for all parents- I definitely learned some new things reading this!" or something. You are clearly coming from a place of good intention, not one of judgement, and I see nothing wrong with trying to make your friend aware of the guidelines. It can definitely be tricky to phrase it right though, so as not to be taken the wrong way.

definitely MYOB.....I would put this in the category of seeing a friend feeding their child formula and saying something to them about how "breast is best". Not my kid, no law broken...not my business.

Sorry to jump in here, but I think this comparison is a bit out there. Formula feeding will not increase the risk of critical injury or death in the event of a car accident. The OP said that she really believes her friend is unaware of the recommendation, she is not trying to judge her or change her parenting choices. How can a parent make an informed choice if they don't even know what their choices are?

To me it's about choices. Definitely not saying that formula causes injury or death or is even in the same category, just connecting it to how annoying it would be to have someone comment on how you choose to raise your kid.

If OP thinks the friend REALLY doesn't know then take the risk and tell her directly...just be prepared that your friend may be pi$$ed off.

Re: WWYD - friend and FF car seat

If it were me, I wouldn't say anything. It's totally HER call as the mom. Sometimes it can just become obnoxious when a person wants to share a cute picture and then somebody starts coming in with unwanted advice. Even if it's not meant to sound holier than thou it pretty often comes off that way. So if it were me, I'd accept that it's not my business. There's a lot of things I don't agree with that friends do with their kids. Not my child, not my call. Keep my focus on my own kid, kwim?

However, if you feel very strongly about it and actually do think your friend is unaware and you're worried for the child's safety, then I like the idea of posting some info on your own page, but not in an obvious way that will make her Chat Icon Just in a "Huh, this is interesting. Thought I'd share for all the other Mamas" (not on the same day as her posted picture, maybe wait a bit). Who knows! Perhaps she'd learn something she doesn't know, OR just ignore the info she doesn't want.

Well, that's MY advice at least. Do what you feel is best Chat Icon

Re: WWYD - friend and FF car seat

I would mention it, but not send articles/videos. What if she didn't know the newer recommendations. I'd be really upset if I was the one using the old recommendations and my friends never even mentioned it to me. What if I got into a car accident and my DC was seriously injured or killed? I would hate to hear from a good friend "I knew you weren't using the most recent carseat recommendations, but I was just MYOB". There's no harm in mentioning the updated carseat recommendations. I wouldn't assume she knows them....

Re: WWYD - friend and FF car seat

there is no harm in mentioning this to your friend!!
honestly,a lot of times people are unaware.
i would do it in a caring, matter of fact way and would try not to sound holier than though or judgemental.

if it is a safety issue, don't ever hold your tongue. it is better to say something than nothing at all when it comes to children.

it's all in the delivery!
at this point, her carseat is already ff, so i doubt she will turn it back around but it doesnt hurt to mention the safety factor.

good luck!

I 1000% agree!!

I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't say anything, and they were in an accident and god forbid that baby was seriously injured. A least I'd know I tried!!

And I do judge parents who KNOW the recommendation, know how much safer it is and still knowingly turn their child before age 2! I cannot wait until it becomes law, which it will!! When we know better, we do better. And those who choose to ignore the research, and information that's out their because they think they know what's best is complete BS and it's negligence IMO.

Ditto...I am a parent who changed seats before 2. With my first 11 months, with my second 13 months and my third 15 or 16 months. It was my choice and my decision.

I'll admit that I'd be annoyed if you said something to me because you bringing it up comes off as if she is doing something wrong, when technically it's just a recommendation and not a law. So it could come off as if you're judging her. Just being honest!

Yeah - that's totally what I'm afraid of and I want to avoid. Like I said earlier though - I honestly don't think she even knows about the recommendation and chose to still front face. She is totally the type who would follow the rec if she knew. I'm leaning toward not saying anything though bc I don't want her to feel like she is being judged by me. It's a hard choice for me, because I love her son and I want him to be as safe as possible and I truly feel rear facing is safest, even if it is not the current law.

if she's a good friend I see no reason why you cant mention it to her. Especially if you think she is the type to follow it and you truely think she doesnt know. I dont have a problem with my best friends giving me a "heads up" or advice for that matter... as long as you dont make her feel stupid or judged for it - I cant see why any really good friend would be annoyed by it.

I would probably post it on my FB as a "wow, I didn't realize this" sort of thing and then at some point casually mention it in conversation. Something like "oh did you see that crazy article/video? i posted the other day?" or just simply say, "so why did you have to turn him around so early?"

If my friendship can't handle a non confrontational conversation about a car seat, it's not a solid friendship. I can't imagine having to tip toe around my friends. We are all very open honest people.

I think you should comment on the pic like " Wow, I always thought you were supposed to keep them RF until 2yo" and throw something in about him being super cute etc...and that way mom can draw her own conclusions about whether or not she should switch him back.
