Those who had late walkers - should I be worried?

DH #1 walked at 13 months but now DS #2 is about to turn 14 months and he is not walking. He pulls himself up, walks holding onto furniture/toys, stands independently for at least 60 seconds but has not taken any steps independently. He loves to walk holding my hands but no steps on his own.

I am not sure if I should be worried. He seems to be doing everything leading up to independent walking but he is turning 14 months. Thanks!

Re: Those who had late walkers - should I be worried?

My son first walked at 14 months and 5 days. I remember because it was my birthday.

I was told to not be fully concerned til at least 18 months.

I have a good friend whose DS is now 16 months and still not really walking. She was also told by ped that they would reassess at 18 months. Don't worry yet.

My DD walked right at 15 mos. which is/was considered the very end of the "normal" range.

Ghats still young. They don't worry till about 18 months. DS1 walked one week shy of 15 months and DS2 just turned a year Sunday and still not close to walking at all. Pulls himself up, but that's it. He doesn't cruise either holding on to things. Give it time

My twins were late walkers. DS started walking independently at 17 months and DD started walking independently at 18 months. They were both pulling to stand and cruising for quite a few months before they started walking independently. I would not worry yet.

DS was 15 months. You will find that one day it will just happen and you will laugh at how you were worried.

Don't worry about it yet. Not that I have a walker, but I didn't walk until 18 months myself (granted, I've never been the most coordinated person, but I'm functional Chat Icon)! I wouldn't worry until then, unless your DC wasn't showing any of the earlier milestones.

DS didn't walk until 18 months, which is still considered "normal" but the absolute late end of it, so don't stress!

DD1 walked at 15.5 months, DS at 17 months. DD2 is now 16 months and is not walking on her own yet. She has been in EI/PT because she wasn't really moving around at all at 10 months (not rolling over, etc.). The therapist says she can physically do it, she just has to get the courage to let go.

DS did not fully walk independently till 15 months. He did the same thing...pull himself up and walk while holding on to things. I was worried too the pediatrician told us not to worry.

I wouldn't worry, as ling as he is doing the skills prior to walking (crawling, pulling up to stand, transitioning in and out of sitting/standing and cruising etc) he will get there. Some kids take one step, then 2 etc and some kids wait and just start full on walking.

Re: Those who had late walkers - should I be worried?

Both of my boys were late walkers- DS #1 was 15 months and DS #2 16 months. They both cruised for several months before taking steps.

They are 2 and 4 now and run everywhere. They are very well coordinated.

My DH was a late walker (17 months) and became a very athletic and coordinated person. I, the walker at 11 months, am not the least bit athletic or coordinated. So I am hoping my boys are taking after Daddy!
