Mom's of late walkers
Did they just get up and go one day out of nowhere or was there a progression...DD is turning 16 mos next week..she'll walk with me holding one hand..and barely even holding her, but the second she thinks I'm going to let go she goes right down to her knees...she'll also try to take one or two steps towards me, but gets scared and goes down to her knees...it's obviously a confidence issue, but just wanted to know if they just gained the confidence one day or it was more of a progression...my back can't take carrying her anymore

Re: Mom's of late walkers
DS walked almost 15 months and he just took off one day and never looked back. He was very cautious - never wanted to fall. When he would stand he would ease himself to the floor while holding on.

Re: Mom's of late walkers
it literally just happened with DS (he walked at around 18 months), he went from no interest in walking (but was cruising, climbing, would take a couple steps at a time and sit down- he just refused to walk by himself) to taking steps...I would place items he wanted (food, toys, pacifier) b/t two surfaces and encourage him to walk from one to the other. That helped alot

my ped also said not to worry, that his eldest daughter didn't walk until she was 17mos...It's just so hard with her being the only one in her gym classes etc...plus she's such a big girl that it look so strange her crawling...and also my back is really starting to feel it

Re: Mom's of late walkers
DS started walking the weekend before he turned 16 months. He walked across the room and never stopped....
I think the average age to walk is 12-16 months

Re: Mom's of late walkers
DS is 15.5 and not walking yet either. He does exactly what you describe your DD doing.
DD started walking about a month ago (14.5 months) it was more of a progression with her, so I'm curious to see what DS will do. I think he could do it if he really wanted to but is afraid to let go.

yup..DD is def afraid to let go...she barely holds on to my finger to walk, but the second she feels me trying to let go she goes right down to her knees...

Re: Mom's of late walkers
DD took her first steps at 12 months & then nothing for 2 months, just holding on & cruising. Then on the morning of her 14 months "birthday" she got up & started & did it quite well. She seemed to be late w/ it but then really didn't fall very much & wasn't very unsteady. (ETA, she was also a late talker & now has totally made up for it )

Re: Mom's of late walkers
We've posted about this back and forth before. DS was standing and playing with a ball. He threw it and walked across half the room to get it. Those were his first steps. Before that, he'd cruise, walk with push toys and walk holding my hand for months. It was definitely a confidence issue for him since he didn't just take 1 or 2 steps. Within 10 days, he was pretty much walking full time.
ETA: DS is also very cautious and hates to fall. He still whines whenever he falls.

Re: Mom's of late walkers
Peyton went from not walking at all to fully walking in about a week or even a little less. She started in the end of her 15th month.
