Mom's of late walkers...

Can you tell I'm waiting for her to walkChat Icon Did they figure out how to stand on their own without holding on to anything or pulling up on anything before walking, and if they did when in relation did they do that to walking? DD will now stand not holding on to anything but still needs to hold on to something to get her in the standing position....I know she's still in the realm of "normal" but I'm getting a bit nervous!

I don't remember the specifics (DD is over 2 1/2 now!), but she didn't walk till 15 mos. I could not WAIT till she walked - I haaated the crawling phase!! Chat Icon Don't worry, it will happen SOON and although others might disagree, I thought walking was SO MUCH better than crawling!! Chat Icon

DD was/is also big - she looked so funny crawling around while babies 1/2 her size were walking circles around her! Chat Icon Does your DD use a walker? (how old is she?)

Thats exactly DD, she's in gymboree and these tiny little kids are running around her and DD who looks like a 2 yr oldChat Icon is crawling around... She doesn't use a walker but can run with a push toy across the rooomChat Icon Meanwhile, as I'm posting she let go of holding on to her "baby jail" and stood there for about five minutes and took half a stepChat Icon Chat Icon Yet, at the same time she still holds on to things to pull herself up...My mom made a good point that I have a lot of things for her to hold on to..and maybe take them away from her..who knows...

I totally meant push toy, not walker! Chat Icon DD was using a push toy for about 3 mos before she took off walking. She took her first big set of steps at Once Upon a Treetop (probably about a week before she was officially walking). Maybe you should take your DD there, too! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Christopher didn't walk until he was almost 16 months old but when he did, he just walked across the room. He cruised, but not a ton (we didn't have much for him to cruise on)

The average age is 12-16 monthsChat Icon

Was he getting up to stand by himself, without pulling up to stand on anything for a while before..thats my concern, Chels isn't doing that..she'll let go once she stands up, but won't pull herself up to stand without support

Honestly, I don't think he did.

He was very tentative, I don't have the typical little boy with bumps and bruises, he was and always has been so cautious. So I think he didn't want to walk til he realized he couldn't get hurtChat Icon

See Chels is rough and tumble she head dives into a ball pit we have for herChat Icon But has always been a child to perfect everything she does before moving onto the next step, but I feel like she's not taking that next step when she obviously can...

Thx!!!Chat Icon

Re: Mom's of late walkers...

My DD is taking steps (maybe 6) after she pulls herself to standing. Even if I try to get her to stand without anything she will crawl to something to pull up on (KWIM?). She will not just get to standing without holding onto something to pull up.

Unless you have seen or heard otherwise I think the getting to standing without holding on comes after or at the same time they begin to full on walk. HTH.

ETA: DD will be 13 months next week.

I thinks it is too hard for them since they are just getting the hang of balancing. Maybe when they get confident with balancing then they will go to standing without pulling up on anything.

I am a anxious for her to full on walk but I am trying so hard to be patient beacuse I see she gets better each day and it will be matter of time before she is a pro. Us moms need some patience Chat Icon

Re: Mom's of late walkers...

When DS started walking, he had to hold onto things to pull himself up at first - getting to a standing position from the middle of the room came a week or so later.

Don't be nervous, DS was a late walker AND a late(r) talker and now at 17.5 months he is all over the place and very verbal! Chat Icon

Re: Mom's of late walkers...

I'm right there with you. DS can stand on his own though he prefers to use somethin to pull himself up. He's proud of himself when he stands up on his own. Chat Icon He loves to walk with his push toys, cruise and walk holding my hands, but he refuses to even try to walk on his own. He flips out if I let go of one of his hands while we walk.
