Why do people read this law and think it means that a woman MUST HAVE AN ABORTION if there is anything wrong with their child at x number of weeks?
Why are we assuming that a doctor would recommend termination for a baby with an 80 percent chance of survival??? Who would do that? That's not even ethical! I mean come on with the crazy talk!
When I was pregnant with my DS, one sonogram came back with an elevated marker for spina bifida. Probably around 20-24 weeks, now that I think about it. Anyway, my doctor called and told me I could have an amnio to find out for sure, but the risk was whatever it was (he threw numbers at me, I'm not a math girl, I was panicked). He said based on the numbers it was probably not necessary - and we're talking an amnio here, certainly not termination. Doctors just don't do what people are imagining they do.
That's not what this is about, not at all! It's about CHOICE. It's about being faced with horrible, painful, gut wrenching choices and choosing the less painful one for a woman and her family. It's not about murdering babies. It's not about not trying. It's about CHOICE that we each hope and pray we never have to make.
I can't like this enough.
I am so tired of everyone running around with their hair on fire and spewing false bullshitt on Facebook without knowing the facts.
They hear NY and Abortion law and automatically think people will be aborting 9 month old fetuses like crazy while Cuomo (who I hate by the way, so no love here) grins maniacally and rubs his hands together.
I can't even with the ignorance.

It's so easy to judge when you haven't been put in a situation like that. I will not make any choices for anyone because I'm not that person, I don't know what it feels like and if I did, everyone is different and handles things very differently. I'm glad this law is in place. STOP making decision for people when you personally haven't been through "such said" situation. Your beliefs are yours and only yours.

It truly amazes me & saddens me that being pro life is considered an “agenda” that needs to be stopped and should be bullied as I’ve seen a few times in this thread... now I’m going off topic here by referring to the VERY vast majority of abortions that take place early & are for the woman’s convenience, no medical reasoning involved... NOT referring at all to the the rarer tragic ones where the baby will not survive.... why NOT empower women to feel that they CAN do it, show them they can give their child the gift of life & rather than ruining their own life, it can actually fulfill their own life.. why not GIVE them the resources & whatever they need to do it successfully... or help them lovingly place their child for adoption... rather than jumping right to abortion rights... this seems much more “pro woman” to me. This is what I hope for in supporting pro life organizations such as Bridge to Life. I think a lot of women have abortions because they feel there’s no other option... and many do regret and think “what if?” What’s so bad about showing them a sonogram with their baby’s heartbeat to make them realize there’s a life there & they have the power to nurture & protect it?

You can't be serious. Someone needs to get invasive surgury to make you happy? So they should take off work, for weeks to make you happy? What if they don't have insurance, or can't afford to do it? Your logic leaps are traumatic for me. This bill is not for the woman you are assuming it is for. This is a bill for wanted babies who unfortunately will be born with exceptionally severe handicaps, or women in traumatic health circumstances. This bill is not to abort a thirty week baby just because reasons.

This is so true. I wanted my tubes tied at 32 when I left my ex husband and no doctor (went to 3!) would do it for me. Because what if I changed my mind

I can't say I'm Pro-life because if feel that abortion is appropriate in cases of rape, incest and mother's health.
I can't say I'm Pro-Choice as I do not agree with abortion in cases of birth control failure. Sorry, If you go in knowing that pregnancy can be a result despite the use of birth control and choose to have sex anyway, well you've made your choice.
Why should the child be forced to pay the price for their parents being sexually active?
Should men who don't want kids get a vasectomy? Yes.
These are my opinions. Just like I don;t have to agree with yours, you don't have to agree with mine. There's no reason to be nasty. If you disagree with a Pro-life opinion on here you get slammed.

Wow, women who aren't ready to have kids should be sterilized. How about the men who don't want to have kids? Should they be forced to vasectomies so they don't accidentally knock someone up?
Abortion isn't birth control, but it's important to have when your birth control fails. Nobody is going to get monthly abortions for the fun of it.
Sex happens. If you only have sex for the purpose of procreation, then good for you, but most people have it for other reasons. Even if you take precautions, pregnancy can result. It's a steep price to say that your punishment for sex should be pregnancy. Pregnancy is 9 months of caring for another human being inside you. You can have serious health complications during pregnancy. After giving birth, you can have on going serious health complications. Why should women be forced to pay that penalty for being sexually active? Child birth shouldn't be forced on anyone.
I had an abortion. Not because I was at risk, but because I wasn't ready to have a kid. My boyfriend and I weren't careful enough, I got pregnant, I wasn't ready to have a kid, and so I got an abortion. It was a huge relief, and I'd make the same decision again.
When I was ready to have a kid, I had complications in child birth and now I have permanent damage that is an ongoing health issue for me. Actually raising a kid is one of the hardest things I've ever done, but I was ready and I wanted it, and I worked through it.
If hadn't had an abortion when I did, I'm not sure I could have handled the challenges of being a parent as well, and I would have been a worse parent for it. Forcing parenthood on people not only effects the parents but also the children. I'm not saying everyone in my situation should get an abortion. I'm saying it's a personal choice and should be respected that they're making the best decision for themselves and their children (present and future).

This is a huge victory for women and, for that matter, their doctors who can now make private decisions about private matters.
Tired of hearing about the proverbial bananas that have nothing to do with this law. Your cousin, your sister in law's sister, your twelfth cousin once removed... whatever they experienced has NO bearing on this law and whether it is just because ALL it does is cement choice.
Not directed at anyone in particular but if you call yourself pro life you had better also be very against the wall, pro taking in a LOT more refugees, pro Medicaid expansion, etc. etc.
Crickets. I didn't think so.
We need to change the language here - it's not pro life. It's pro fetus.

I guess a full hysterectomy should be in order then! At 25 years old. So you don't have to worry about ever needing an abortion.

I can't get my tubes tied, LMAO. I asked 3 doctors to do it, but I am too young, they won't do it!!
Love that women feel other women (who are responsible and use BC) should live in the dark ages!

Being responsible would include taking responsibility of a baby that you MADE by CHOOSING to have sex before you were ready to procreate.
At 38 you should be old enough to realize that.

No dear. You should have your tubes tied and as a 2nd precaution your SO should have a vasectomy. And you should also use the rhythm method as a 3rd fail safe.
And if all that fails- yes you must have the baby.
I can't get my tubes tied, LMAO. I asked 3 doctors to do it, but I am too young, they won't do it!!
Love that women feel other women (who are responsible and use BC) should live in the dark ages!

Meanwhile my doctor assumed that because I had my second at 38 that I wanted my tubes tied (I did not) and offered to do it during my C. Talk about the distortion of power dynamics.

I can't say I'm Pro-life because if feel that abortion is appropriate in cases of rape, incest and mother's health.
I can't say I'm Pro-Choice as I do not agree with abortion in cases of birth control failure. Sorry, If you go in knowing that pregnancy can be a result despite the use of birth control and choose to have sex anyway, well you've made your choice.
Why should the child be forced to pay the price for their parents being sexually active?
Should men who don't want kids get a vasectomy? Yes.
These are my opinions. Just like I don;t have to agree with yours, you don't have to agree with mine. There's no reason to be nasty. If you disagree with a Pro-life opinion on here you get slammed.
That's fine for your personal beliefs, but there is no reason why you need to push your beliefs on other people or shame them for having sex.
I think unwanted children who are forced on their parents pay a much higher price than an embryo that is aborted. My abortion led to two very much wanted kids who might not be here otherwise...
